22.01.2022 Burnt Paper Koalas are one of my favourite animals to make artworks out of as they always have personality, even when they are sleeping. There is something about them that I’m always drawn to; the laid back attitude, the sleeping, but mostly their confidence in that everything is going to be okay. I love studying them and spending hours, days, and sometimes weeks etching back all the fur details so you could almost pull them off the page and give them a cuddle after they’...ve given that itch a mighty good scratch! Fun Fact:The name ‘Koala’ is an Aboriginal word meaning ‘no drink’. This is descriptive in the sense that koalas are able to obtain enough moisture from their diet of eucalyptus leaves and will rarely look for additional water sources. 22.01.2022 Burnt Paper "Whistling Kite" Aka Whistling Eagle, Whistling Hawk, Chicken Hawk, and the Kite Hawk. Often thought of as ‘the pirate in the sky’ by raptor enthusiasts due to their common behaviour of stealing and robbing to procure a meal; just as the expected behaviour of a pirate!... Named after their distinctive whistling call, the Whistling Kite can be heard whilst in flight overhead or perched. Native to Australia, distribution is widespread across the mainland. They can also be found in New Guinea, the Solomon Islands, and New Caledonia. They are uncommon in Tasmania, although a few pairs have been sighted. 08.01.2022 34 hours later... (roughly, it's probably more!) I finish the drawing stage Using a 2H, HB and 4B pencil to block in the shading and get some nice outlines to guide the burning. This stage isn't about fine detail as the fire will wreck that anyway I've got to keep the paper as clean as possible as the soot will show any erased pencil marks that have left grooves in the paper! For those wondering... I do the sketch, rough work and all the proportion mistakes on separat...e tracing paper then transfer the cleaner line work and go from there!
