25.01.2022 This International Firefighters Day, we reflect and honour the commitment, dedication and hard work of all CFA people and the broader firefighting community. W...e remember the 79 CFA members who have paid the ultimate sacrifice. We show gratitude for those who travelled interstate and internationally to fight unprecedented fires not only in Victoria, but across the country and pay respect for the nine who lost their lives in the 2019/2020 Australian fires, their sacrifice will never be forgotten.

24.01.2022 Media release Monday July 13th, 2020 Kitchen fires, the preventable problem... Residents are being reminded to not become complacent in the kitchen as cooking is the single largest cause of fire in the home. Deputy Chief Officer Trevor Owen said cooking in the kitchen was the leading cause of preventable house fires and were responsible for a high level of personal injury. These genuinely avoidable fires are an ongoing worry for firefighters who see again and again the devastating impact on families and their property, he said. Preventing a fire comes down to simple things like being aware of what distracts you when youre in the kitchen and setting a timer so you dont forget about whats on the stove. We encourage all residents to pay attention in their kitchen; appliances should be clean, free from built up grease and children must always be supervised. Small mistakes like leaving tea towels and paper towels close to the heat source can also have serious consequences. People have an it will never happen to me mindset, but the reality is that it does happen. Everyone needs to pay attention to the small mistakes that can cause fires at home. Kitchen fire safety tips: Always supervise children in the kitchen. Keep them away from the stove top and oven. Keep the stove top, grill, oven, range hood and cooking area free from built up grease, dust and oil. Stay in the kitchen and never leave cooking unattended. Tea towels and paper towels must be kept away from cooking and heat sources. Make sure kitchen appliances are clean and in good working order. A fire extinguisher and fire blanket should be stored within easy reach but away from the cooking area. CFA recommends that you only use a fire extinguisher or fire blanket if you feel physically and mentally able to use this equipment safely. If you are older or have a disability you should evacuate as soon as possible and phone Triple Zero (000). Do not attempt to fight the fire yourself.

11.01.2022 Tomorrow marks a landmark day in the history of the Victorian fire services - the start of Fire Rescue Victoria (FRV). This is a huge change, combining the MFB and CFA career firefighters into one service, leaving CFA as a volunteer only service. In Maffra, you will see nothing change. We are all volunteers and we will continue to be. ... Our closest FRV (career) station will be Traralgon. The amazing FRV staff from Traralgon, Morwell, our District HQ office and beyond will continue to support us when we need them - as they always have. (Most recently last week when Traralgon and Hallam came to visit for our transformer fire!) We wish them well on their new adventure. There are many questions unanswered and a lot of media hype and rumours. That is ok. What you, our community, need to know is that your volunteers, the Maffra Fire Brigade, are here and always will be. 24/7. Stay safe. Captain Dave.

08.01.2022 Media release May 21, 2020 Be fire safe during these cosy times indoors With cold weather well and truly settling in, residential house fires become a bigger risk in Victoria.... There have been many instances that our favourite appliances cause house fires due to overheating or faulty electrical equipment. Deputy Chief Officer Trevor Owen said using faulty or damaged electrical equipment could result an increased risk of fire at home; we urge people to ensure their appliances were in good condition before plugging them in. People need to remember that when electrical appliances are left on for an extended period of time they could overheat and have disastrous effects. We also recommend checking your electrical appliances for product recall notices using the www.productsafety.gov.au website. We are urging residents to check their electrical appliances including computers and televisions which are more readily used in home at present. Check youre not overloading power-boards or have loose cables, ensure monitors, laptops, televisions and other equipment have a good air flow around them and are not in confined spaces or covered for example leaving laptops and mobile phones on your beds. Make sure you turn off electrical appliances before going to bed. When leaving your home unattended it is best to unplug your electrical appliances. Our firefighters dont want anyone to come home to their house on fire, so spending the time to check your appliances condition and ensuring you turn them off properly is essential. Electrical Appliances safety tips: Always follow the manufacturers instructions when using any electrical appliance. Use low wattage globes in lamps. Turn off all electrical appliances at the power point when not in use. Only use certified electrical tradespeople to repair damaged/faulty electrical appliances, wiring or equipment. Avoid using double adaptors. Use power boards according to manufacturers instructions, never overload and check regularly for damage. Check your electrical equipment for product recall notices and receive product recall alerts via email using www.productsafety.gov.au
