25.01.2022 But first: we protect The cliche picture of Landcare is planting trees. But one of the first things many Victorian Landcarers do on their property... is protect any remnant bush that is already there. They do this by fencing patches off from stock [stopping cows and sheep from rubbing against trees and killing them off], removing choking weeds and planting native supporting veg around it. Remnant trees across Victoria that survived European clearing are incredibly precious. Like this awe-inspiring River Red Gum in the Mullinger Swamp on the South Australian/ Victorian border. The photo was taken by Aaron Poole @thetreegiant01 who captures the ancient elder in all its glory. Contact your local Landcare group to see how they can help you protect what you got!

21.01.2022 We're unable to come together for planting events but we can still share what we're doing on our own patch during this perfect planting weather...

13.01.2022 Drought makes it difficult to keep on top of weeds and pest animals. Want some help? We’re very excited to announce that grant funding and other support is available to landholders through the new Wellington Weeds and Pest Animal Control project (WWePAC). All the information, application form and guidelines are available our website www.mdln.com.au/funding-to-tackle-weeds-pest-animals/.... A big thank you to our project partners @Wellington Shire Council and @awegov for their support.

06.01.2022 Gazanias, the pretty (awful) weed ... We found a single Gazania plant over 2 km from the nearest infestation! Gazania are a perennial, wind-dispersed daisy from... southern Africa, now widespread across Victoria. Sadly many people think they are wildflowers. But they’re not. They are evil weeds which can travel and invade undisturbed bushland. Worse, we have found that if you dig out a flowering plant and leave it, there is still enough energy in the root system to get the flowers to seeding stage. Now if we find one in the bush and we can’t take the entire plant with us, we pull each flower head off individually, as well as pull the plant out by the roots. This is a weed that will always be trying to sneak onto Raakajlim, because our nearby roadsides are Gazania factories. https://www.malleeconservation.com.au/blog/gazania
