23.01.2022 A photo of the last collection of used hearing aids taken from the bins in the Pharmacies in Maffra, Stratford, Inglis St, Sale and Priceline in the Gippsland Centre. These will be sent to the Rotary Club of Toorak where they will be tested and sorted before being redistributed to people who would normally not be in a position to afford a set. A very big thank you to those who donated these so that others can experience the pleasure of hearing again.

17.01.2022 Since this article appeared on the Gippsland Times we have had a marked increase in donations, with full boxes at some pharmacies. Great result! RECYCLED SOUND Did you know that hearing aids can be recycled and reused? Maffra Rotary Club is assisting Recycled Sound in the collection of used and unwanted hearing aids for cleaning, repairing and refitting for people in need. Hearing aids are very expensive and many people in our community do not have the means to access them. ... Being hearing impaired can lead to isolation, lack of job opportunities, reduced self esteem and dependence on other people. People of all ages can be affected, and Josh Westland (13) was keen to be involved in the project as he understands the problems through his own hearing impairment. Recycled Sound is a not-for-profit community service established in order to recycle hearing aids and distribute them to those who need them. Used and no longer wanted hearing aids are collected, reprogramed and fitted to people suffering from diminished hearing and who are financially disadvantaged and ineligible for Government assistance, such as low income families, migrants and refugees. This enables them to be independent and participate in our communities in all its forms. Each client is tested and assessed for their suitability to the program, and is fitted with the best aid possible. Recycled Sound was initiated by the Toorak Rotary Clubin 2014. Volunteers help to collect and clean donated hearing aids and assist with the operational aspects of the project. By recycling hearing aids, Recycled Sound is also increasing sustainability in our community and environment. Maffra Rotary Club is supporting this program by collecting hearing aids and forwarding them to Recycled Sound. There are collection boxes in audiology clinics and pharmacies in Sale, Stratford, Maffra and Heyfield as well as the General Store in Briagalong. Priceline Pharmacy in Sale have a collection box as does Inglis St Pharmacy. Financial contributions are also gratefully received, as the organisation is not government funded and needs money to purchase and maintain equipment, hire specialists and clinic space and for publicity. Anyone wishing to donate, or in need of a hearing aid through this program should contact them via their website, recycledsound.org.au.

10.01.2022 We managed to fit in our changeover dinner at Duart Homestead, just in time before lockdown. With the help of Past District Governor Don Ripper, president Ted Mitchell handed over the chain of office to incoming president Veronica Dwyer and Veronica introduced her board for 2020-2021. In addition to the presidential changeover two members were honoured with Paul Harris Fellow recognition. Jean Malmo has been a Rotarian since 2001 and was Maffra Rotary Clubs first female pre...sident. She has worked mainly with youth portfolios, fostering links between Rotary and schools and was Team Leader of a Group Study Exchange to Germany in 2010. She has also been the Rotary District 9820 Probus Chair since 2017 and is currently on the Maffra Rotary Club board and editor of the club bulletin. Helen Lanigan is already a Paul Harris Fellow but she was given the rare but well deserved honour of a Triple Sapphire Pin. This was in recognition not only of her extensive work in Rotary and the community but as additional recognition for her exceptional work within the club. Helen was Mayor of the City of Sale in 1993-94 and has served on many committees and boards for the arts as well as education, taking leading roles in many organisations such as the Sale Rural Teachers Association, Jaycees and Sale Regional Art Gallery. As well as being secretary of the Maffra Rotary Club, she is currently convenor of the Bairnsdale Red Cross Telecross Service and supports the Geelong Football club. Past District Governor Don Ripper gave a address to the club about Rotary values, which include high ethical standards in business and professions, the ideal of service in each Rotarians personal, business and community life, and the advancement of international understanding, goodwill and peace. The evening concluded after everyone had enjoyed good food, fun and fellowship. The club looks forward to its future meetings via Zoom! Photos are by Dr Jakob Malmo. Speakers were able to not wear a mask as we have hearing impaired members in our club.
