We are so excited to begin our series with Merinda Dutton, co-founder of Blackfulla Bookclub Merinda Dutton is a Gumbaynggir and Barkindji woman who has an established legal career championing the rights of Aboriginal people. Merinda is a big lover of reading and story-telling. She was named Indigenous Legal Professional of the Year at the Natio...nal Indigenous Legal Conference in Darwin in 2019. What do you love about your job? "Mostly, I love working with Aboriginal people and communities to overcome legal issues that are important to them. I enjoy the intellectual work of using my legal skills to challenge the status quo." What advice would you give to a young person wanting to grow up to be a 'Superhero'? "You are powerful because your ancestors walked this earth before you, and their spirits walk with you now too. Never forget that. 13.01.2022 This gentle story set in the rugged Australian bush is about a small calf who becomes separated from his family. The little calf is alone and simply wants his mother, sisters and brothers. He can see other animals, and after running to the river, manages to ask some horses if they are his family. The calfs family have been taken away in the back of a noisy truck. So begins the little calfs journey to find his family. In Found we share the calfs point of view in an evocative story, accompanied by stunning illustrations.

Shirley is a world-renowned Gija artist and Kimberley Elder, famous for her rich ochre paintings. The book tells her life story in both Gija and English. This new annual opportunity, worth $10,000, is intended to provide valuable time for a mid-career author to work on a current manuscript. 02.01.2022 We're celebrating our First Nations Superheroes in honour of Breanna Hume's book 'I Want to Be a Superhero', and it's our pleasure to introduce you to Dr Kim Isaacs! Dr Kim Isaacs is a proud Yawuru, Karajarri woman from her mother's side and Noongar from her father's side. She is a General Practitioner and is passionate about improving child health, hospital and primary health care service delivery. She is a lecturer for medical students and Medical Educator for doctors... training in General Practice. What do you love about your job? I love that I can help people feel better, whether it is by listening or providing medicine or connecting them to other health people. I get to look after people of all ages from babies to the very old. I sometimes get to fly in small airplanes to do remote clinics. Being a doctor is challenging and you work hard, but the work is very rewarding. What advice would you give to a young person wanting to grow up to be a ’Superhero’? Follow that dream and dreams can become reality. Set yourself a goal, or many goals, and work towards them. Ask others for help.
