25.01.2022 Celebrating 110 Years in 2019 An Orchard Childhood Give me a home among the gum trees, with lots of plum, apple and pear trees, a dog or two and a kangaroo, a clothes line out the back, verandah out the front and an old rocking chair. ... Its hard not to think this song was written about our place! 5 Generations of children have had the privilege to grow up on our orchard in the valley. TCA Magarey was a middle aged man when he first took ownership of the place in 1909. Since that time many special memories have been made between young siblings, cousins and family - many who have grown to adults and have seen the generations come and sadly go. Like any life on the land its natures ultimate playground! . . #magareyorchard #est1909 #aamagareyandsons #110thanniversary #thankful #coromandelvalley

24.01.2022 Here we go again! It's time for a new crop of pears and plums to emerge. Although we're hoping the snails find somewhere else to call home.

22.01.2022 Our orchard has never stopped changing since 1909 but the beauty of the contrasting seasons always stays the same. #magareyorchard #magareypears #coromandelvalley

22.01.2022 Celebrating 110 years in 2019 **Community Thanks** As 2019 draws to a close, we wrap our 110th reflections. We saved the most important people to recognise for last - our customers!... To the people that come to our shed door to shop local, to the people who go out of their way to look for Magarey Pears, to the people who support their local fruit and veg retailers that supply our fruit, to the people that come to support our Harvest Festivals and to those that kick up their heels at our Bush Dances - we say a BIG THANK YOU all for your continued support! As a business we could not sustain through the generations without the ongoing support from our customers. Thank you for supporting local SA businesses through the good and bad times - we think especially of our fellow fruit growers who have been affected by the fires and know how much your support means. Merry Christmas and a Happy 2020 from all of us at Magarey Orchard. We look forward to providing you with more quality fresh fruit next year! #magareyorchard #est1909 #110thanniversary #corormandelvalley #thankful #merrychristmas

22.01.2022 HANDY HACK Are your fresh Aussie pears not quite ripe? Try popping them in the fruit bowl with bananas or apples This will help speed up the ripening process, so you can enjoy them sooner

22.01.2022 Celebrating 110 years in 2019 We would not have been able to make it to 110 years without our past and present workers. These men and women have to endure hot summers and cold winters each year in order to help Magarey Orchard function. Wed like to send out a big thank you to our employees and volunteers who have contributed to us over the years!... Morning tea is an orchard tradition. Here are some of our workers enjoying a cuppa and toasted cheese sandwiches after working hard in the orchard, packing shed, workshop and office. 20.01.2022 Who wouldve thought milk cartons make excellent tree guards!? Weve been busy planting hundreds of plum trees - it takes time to ensure they are all on the same angle so the trees can grow properly on a trellis. #magareyorchard #magareypears #ichoosesa #coromandelvalley

20.01.2022 Its been real colourful Autumn, thanks for the colour show & pick me up! #magareyorchard #est1909 #coromandelvalley

13.01.2022 We are thinking of starting to do tours of the orchard on Fridays starting next week. We just wanted to reach out to the community and find out if this is something you might be interested in? Our tour will be an hour to an hour and a half and consist of walking around the orchard to see our pear, apple and plum trees and explain how we prune, thin and pick our fruit. Take you around our packing shed to explain how we grade, store and who we sell our fruit to. Followed by a ...tasting of the current varieties of fruit we have and explain to you a little about what you can make with our pears and how to ripen your pear to your desired taste. Along with a little history of how our family has been growing pears for 110 years. If this is something youd be interested in please comment below with a desired time (morning or afternoon). Wed love to share our love for pears with you! #magareypears #magareyorchard #coromandelvalley #pickalocal #visitadelaidehills

12.01.2022 Happiness is a full truck, without getting sopping wet trying to load it! The rumble of a truck driving down Magarey Road around 1am every Wednesday, is John or Andrew delivering our fruit to customers at the SA Produce Markets. #magareypears #magareyorchard #coromandelvalley

11.01.2022 Celebrating 110 years in 2019 5th Generation The 4th generation produced 10 children so you can imagine the 5th generation is like our very own baby boomer generation. 30+ children were born between the late 70s to mid 00s. The train whistles rung out often across the valley, especially in the 80s! This generation has had the privilege to grow up on the Orchard (or visit on holidays), learning from their fathers and uncles and with so many cousins by their side made for... a unique and adventurous childhood - just ask Coromandel Valley PS! Some fond memories would have to be morning teas at Grandmas (Rosemary and Anne), having Grandpas (David and Roger) teach them something about the world, working alongside family and building solid friendships with each other. A strong work ethic was instilled in all of them, seeing the dedication of their forefathers and the tireless work it takes to work the land. As a sort of right of passage, most of them have donned a picking bag, driven a tractor, truck, hydro-ladder, quad bike and forklift. Many volunteer at our Harvest Festival and Bush Dance events. Some have dabbled in making Nunkri cider and juice and the Orchard Sisters, who make jams and chutneys stem from this generation too. Most have gone onto other careers, (the running joke is Engineering or Education but there have been new paths taken too) and some continue to work in the business. Michael manages the employees and looks after the tree management with his father, Andrew. Elsje works part time at the shed to ensure the best fruit gets to our shops, Alex maintains all things mechanical including our coldstrores and refrigeration. And married into the family Judy (marketing of our fruit to our green grocer customers, office work and grading) Sarah (makes our delicious jams at fruits sales, grades, picks and prunes) and Gabes also currently works in the shed grading. You may be wondering about the 6th generation... The multitudes are growing up fast too! Orchard life and childhood go together like pear and cheese. #magareyorchard #est1909 #aamagareyandsons #110thanniversary #thankful #coromandelvalley

06.01.2022 Photo A: Sometimes things dont go to plan! Photo B: But harvest is looking good this year! *IMPORTANT UPDATE*... We are disappointed to advise that our Harvest Festival will be postponed this April, due to you know what. We hold out hope to reschedule for later in the year. If you have bought tickets online you have the option of being refunded. We want to say a big THANK YOU to all our volunteers and suppliers who had planned to make the day happen. We look forward to working with you again in time and opening our Festival Door to the public once again. . . #magareyorchard #harvestfestival #coromandelvalley #est1909

06.01.2022 In the fruit growing world, the ugliest fruit often produce the most beautiful colours. These Tsu Li are one of many pollinators we have throughout the orchard, to help grow a strong crop of Packhams and Nashi etc. The great thing about growing several varieties of pears, plums and apples is that the trees change colour at different rates, contributing to an ever changing patchwork. #magareyorchard #magareypears #coromandelvalley

05.01.2022 One of our family members who is behind @goodboyevents will be running a CFS fundraiser on our Orchard Sat 15th February. All funds will be donated to our very own Coro Valley CFS! See event page for more details

04.01.2022 It feels a bit like Christmas at the moment, with red and green pears on our trees and a sprinkle of white bird netting. Were busy picking our Packham pears and look forward to catching our breath once harvest is over. #magareyorchard #magareypears #coromandelvalley

04.01.2022 Celebrating 110 years in 2019 We would have not been able to stay in business for 110 years if it wasnt for our supportive green grocer and wholesale customers! Over the years we have had customers come and go but we are very thankful for the loyalty we have seen! As a grower we aspire to grow the best piece of fruit we can but in order for our fruit to reach the end user we need the partnership of our green grocers and wholesale friends. Without this partnership our tasty... pears would not have become as popular as they are in and around Adelaide. We hope that working together we can keep these shops selling our fruit for many more years to come. A big thank you to our customers who have been with us in the past and to our current customers. 03.01.2022 Preparations are well underway for a white Christmas in the valley. Heres a few snaps showing how our (makeshift) crane feeds the net out onto the tops of the trees. Using hydraladas/cherry pickers, the workers lay the netting flat and tie it down. #magareyorchard #magareypears #coromandelvalley

03.01.2022 Welcome to our plum season! Currently we have Mariposa and Donsworth (blood plums) for sale, at our shed door. #magareyorchard #coromandelvalley
