25.01.2022 Have fast-paced video-games trained your child's brain to crave more and more fast-paced digital experiences? Should you be concerned? This article looks at the relationship between digital technology and reading, with a focus on attention, motivation and exposure to language. The take home message for parents and teachers is to openly discuss the fast pleasures of easy-to-read digital texts versus the satisfaction that is gained more slowly through sustained effort when reading, and to make reading a family value.

25.01.2022 For students with ongoing difficulties with writing there is a variety of assistive technology tools that can help.

20.01.2022 They don't need an app. They don't need flash cards. They just need an engaged conversation partner. Happy chatting!

20.01.2022 Developmental Language Disorder is a common disorder affecting 7.5% of 4-5 year olds, according to a recent study. It is a "hidden" disorder, attracting far less attention and funding that other disabilities, such as Autism Spectrun Disorder. People with Developmental Language Disorder have difficulty understanding or using language. It is a long term difficulty that can persist into adulthood. It often runs in families, but has no known cause. We do know, however, that people with Developmental Language Disorder benefit from support and strategies from their teachers, Speech Pathologists, and other specialists to help them to learn and to interact with others. 22nd September is Developmental Language Disorder Day. What better day to start raising awareness of DLD! For more great information: https://www.youtube.com/radld

20.01.2022 It has been a wonderful year working together with families and schools, and now the time has come for everyone to enjoy a well-deserved break. I wish you all a wonderful Christmas and a Happy New Year, and I look forward to seeing you in 2018!

20.01.2022 Something not to be taken for granted - swallowing. Happy swallowing awareness day!

16.01.2022 Free apps! I like the idea of the BookRecorder for tracking reading fluency.

16.01.2022 Today we commemorate Eleanor Roosevelt.

15.01.2022 It can be hard for some children to 'crack the code' of written English. According to research, as many as one third of students will have difficulty learning to read, and one third will not learn to read at all if they are not taught phonics explicitly. The phonics instruction approach that has the highest level of evidence is the "systematic synthetic phonic approach" (for more information, see: http://www.fivefromfive.org.au/explicit-phonics-instruction/). I love using the Sounds-Write systematic synthetic phonics programme in my practice. It is great to know that Sounds-Write has developed an app to complement teaching of the initial code!

13.01.2022 Happy Book Week! Shared book reading is a great opportunity to bond with your child, to develop their language skills and their understanding of abstract concepts, such as desires and thoughts. Which of these things will you try out next time you read together?

12.01.2022 It's book week and I am very excited about dressing up one King Midas and one Ali Baba for this week's parade! I'll also be topping up my decodable reader collection. Don't miss out on the10% discount!

10.01.2022 Congratulations to this much-respected and dedicated Speech Pathologist, Dr Caroline Bowen.

05.01.2022 It's been a long time since I've posted here (my last post was dated pre-COVID-19 era!). Today, I will break the drought and share with you what I think is a brilliant website. The Curated Book List is a list of books selected by researchers, librarians and parents. The books are sorted into stages, to best suit the level of the reader. The books are also sorted into two categories: books that are recommended to be read aloud TO children, and books recommended to be read BY children. The former contain more complex language and themes that can be discussed with the grown up. And, if that wasn't fantastic enough, it is possible to locate the books in libraries worldwide via the WorldCat link. This is a real gem for a Speechie who is passionate about reading! See what you think! http://haskinsglobal.org/curated-book-list/

05.01.2022 I was just discussing this at a Kindy expo at one of the schools where I work. Does your child want to read the same book over and over again? Don't worry. It's actually helping them to learn and retain new words and information.
