24.01.2022 Tuesday 9 June 2020: One of Americas most popular, most talented, and most prolific songwriters was born today in 1891 in Peru, Indiana. COLE PORTER was a leading creator of the new kind of popular song heard in the United States after World War I. His lyrics were earthy, sophisticated, and altogether un-Victorian, with melodies and rhythm that were influenced by black jazz and European impressionism. The story of Cole Porter was told in a major motion picture in 2004, DE-LO...VELY, starring Kevin Kline and Ashley Judd, with songs, performed by the likes of Sheryl Crow, Robbie Williams, Alanis Morisette, Elvis Costello, and Natalie Cole. Porter was a member of the smart set, living in Paris for most of the 1920s, occasionally contributing songs to Broadway revues. In a riding accident in 1937, Porters legs were crushed by a horse. He endured numerous operations the rest of his life, as well as being a semi-invalid. Cole Porter was a lavish entertainer, the image of sophistication and style, as were the lyrics and melodies he wrote. His numerous Broadway musicals include THE GAY DIVORCE; ANYTHING GOES; RED, HOT AND BLUE; KISS ME, KATE; CAN-CAN; SILK STOCKINGS; DUBARRY WAS A LADY; PANAMA HATTIE; and SOMETHING FOR THE BOYS. His movie scores include BORN TO DANCE; ROSALIE; BROADWAY MELODY OF 1940; SOMETHING TO SHOUT ABOUT; and HIGH SOCIETY. The list of Cole Porter songs forms the backbone of American popular music: All of You All Through the Night Always True to You in My Fashion Another Opnin, Another Show Anything Goes At Long Last Love Begin the Beguine Blow, Gabriel, Blow Dont Fence Me In Down in the Depths Cest Magnifique Easy To Love Evrytime We Say Goodbye For Your Love Friendship From This Moment On I Concentrate on You I Get a Kick out of You I Love Paris I Love You In the Still of the Night Its Alright With Me Its De-Lovely Ive Got You Under My Skin Just One of Those Things Leader of a Big-Time Band Lets Do It Love for Sale Miss Otis Regrets My Heart Belongs to Daddy Night and Day So in Love Too Darn Hot True Love Well Did You Evah? 18.01.2022 Its the 27th JUNE: Today is the anniversary of the birth in 1859 of MILDRED HILL, composer of the melody for Happy Birthday to You. Mildred wrote the song Good Morning to All for teachers and students to sing together in classrooms. It was first published in 1893 in SONG STORIES FOR SUNDAY SCHOOL. Mildreds sister, Patty Smith Hill, wrote the now-famous birthday lyric (that must have taken quite a long time), which was added to the melody in 1924, eight years after Mildreds death.

13.01.2022 Americas favorite redhead, LUCILLE DESIREE BALL, was born today in 1911 in Jamestown, New York. After an unremarkable film career in the 30s and 40s, Lucy achieved true stardom with her CBS radio show MY FAVORITE HUSBAND from 1947-1951, in which she played a wacky housewife. When the network asked her to develop a TV comedy series, she and husband Desi Arnaz responded by using a similar formula in creating I LOVE LUCY. The show was an instant success that quickly became the ...number-one series on TV, running from 1951-57. The shows innovative use of three cameras instead of one enabled it to be the first to be filmed in front of a live audience. The show is also credited with shifting the television capital from New York to Los Angeles, as Lucy and Desi insisted on working on the West Coast. Lucy and Desi split in 1960, and when Lucy bought out Desis share of their Desilu Productions, she became the first woman to head a major studio. Lucy starred in three more series during the 60s and 70s: THE LUCY SHOW; HERES LUCY; and LIFE WITH LUCY. The beloved comedienne died on April 26, 1989. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yR-xUWQWTEI See more
