08.01.2022 A New Temporary Visa for Parents up to Five Years Subclass 870 Sponsored Parent (Temporary) visa A new pathway for parents of Australian citizens and Australian permanent residents to temporarily remain in Australia up to five (5) years at a time without departing is soon to open for sponsorship and visa application. Minister for Immigration, Citizenship and Multicultural Affairs David Coleman announced on 1 March 2019 applications to sponsor a parent will open on 17 April ...2019. Once a sponsorship is approved, a sponsored parent will be able to apply for a visa starting on 1 July 2019. Subclass 870 visa replaces Visitor visa concession that existed for parent of Australian citizens/permanent residents to stay in Australia for longer periods. Unlike permanent Parent visas, there is no Balance of Family Test requirement for this visa. This visa aims to respond to community concerns about limited number of Parent places in migration program and associated lengthy waiting periods. Some features of subclass 870 visa 1. Temporary visa and does not allow for permanent residence. 2. Visa holder will generally be subject to ‘no work’ condition. 3. Sponsors should be: a. Australian citizens, Australian permanent resident or New Zealand citizens who has been usual resident in Australia for four years; b. Able to meet minimum household income threshold; c. Able to comply with sponsorship obligations (among others, financial support and accommodation of parents, pay outstanding debts incurred by parents in Australia). 4. Visa applicants should be: a. Sponsored by an approved parent sponsor; b. Outside Australia; c. Able to provide access to funds; d. Able to provide evidence of health insurance; e. Able to satisfy health, character and national security requirements. 5. The visa allows parents to stay in Australia temporarily for up to five years at a time. A parent must be outside Australia for at least 90 days before being eligible to apply for a further 870 visa. A parent will be able to hold visas up to a total of 10 years and will not be eligible for a further 870 visa. Cost of subclass 870 visa 1. Sponsorship application fee: $420.00 2. Visa application fee: a. $5,000.00 for a visa up to three years; and b. $10,000.00 for a visa up to five years. 3.
