25.01.2022 We believe it is important and beneficial to work with our islanders and visitors and thank all who follow and contact us when necessary, and hope this little information packet will help.

20.01.2022 Hello, We hope this weekend will give you fabulous weather for The Great Island Trek. With participation of 500 plus we would like to ask participants to be al...ert to the island's wildlife they may encounter during their trek. If you come across any wildlife please enjoy but give them their space. If anyone comes across any wildlife that appear injured, orphaned, etc. and need assistance please contact Magnetic Island Fauna Care Organisation - Officia on 0457 634 732 or Wallaby Refuge on Magnetic Island 0400 243 842. We will be available for calls throughout your adventure. This video was taken on Sooning Street, Nelly Bay .... you never know what you may see. Have a wonderful day :)

17.01.2022 We are having land works and improvements happening on the island at the moment and with that there are times wildlife get themselves into trouble. MIFCO received a call this week from workers on the Apjohn Street project. The call came in as a baby duck in a dug-out trench that also had filled somewhat with water. As the workmen were now wanting to fill the trench but unable to capture the duck they called us for help. On rescue we found a young duck that was not able to f...ly out or climb out of the trench so just floated back and forth. This young duck appeared healthy, just in the wrong place. After much discussion and research we have found that there are wild ducks in the Lagoon at HSB. It appeared he was unable to get out of the trench due to the depth and narrowness vs. injuries but we prepared him for observation. We kept this young duck in care x 1 day observation and he was moving about well both on land and in the water filled bath. Stress is a high factor in decisions and we wanted to keep this at a minimum. The decision was made to release him in the lagoon. As soon as he was in the water he was off, zigzagging away with good strength and speed. A moment later we could not find him. Where is he? And then we saw he had found shelter by the leafy bank area. Soon enough he was out and swimming about. He was in his world. He was happy. We again want to thank the workers who found this fellow for contacting MIFCO, and all who at times find orphaned or injured wildlife or, as in this case, a rescue in need. We love working these rescues out with you guys and are always available even if it is just for a query.

15.01.2022 IT'S BABY FRUIT BAT SEASON - NO TOUCH = NO RISK - JUST CALL MIFCO ON 0457634732 We are starting to see baby fruit bats on the island, like this orphaned baby girl from the Butterfly Forest (yes, we named her Butterfly) . If you find a baby bat or injured adult, DON'T TOUCH it so that there is no risk to you. Just call MIFCO on 0457634732, stay near, but clear of the bat until a carer arrives, or take a GPS mark with Google Maps, and or give SUPER clear instructions about ho...w to find the animal. Thank you to the wonderful people who found Butterfly and stayed near, but clear so that our carers could rescue her!!! We collaborate with NQ wildlife Care to provide licenced, vaccinated carers to rescue and care for bats, including babies who need very specific nutritional care. 13.01.2022 This young coastal carpet python, Morelia spilota mcdowelli, was rescued from a door jam on #MagneticIsland #Yunbenun this week. It's being monitored under the direction of expert snake rehabilitators for 72 hours to make sure that no spinal or muscle injuries occurred. It's looking great so far and will likely go back to the wild soon. Kaspa Blewett #snake #python #moreliaspilota #magneticisland #mifco

12.01.2022 Amazing team work between Magnetic Island Fauna Care Organisation - Officia, Wallaby Refuge on Magnetic Island and Bungalow Bay YHA - Magnetic Island to bring the injured top knot pigeon into the safe hands of our local bird rescue expert Bev Murphy.

10.01.2022 Magnetic Island Fauna Care Organisation has trained rescuers and works often in association with Ali, Tim, and Izzy of the Magnetic Island Koala Hospital.

08.01.2022 So spikey, so cute! Echidnas are one of Magnetic Island's pricklier characters. They are unique to Australia, and one of just two species called monotremes. Monotremes are unique among mammals, because they lay eggs and suckle their young on milk. All other mammals give birth to live young, just like people. Echidna's are so special that special permits are needed to look after them. MIFCO collaborates with Wallaby Refuge Magnetic Island and NQ Wildlife Care to ensure that they receive the specialist care required. As always, if you find injured, sick or orphaned wildlife, call MIFCO on 0457634732.

03.01.2022 Hi Everyone Koalas are most definitely on the move -looking for love but often finding trouble instead Please SLOW down especially after dark for all wildlife... Please keep your dogs restrained if there is obviously a koala in your yard Happy to share the photo evidence of the damage that dog bites do Left alone they will move on It is really stressful to capture a koala so they are only caught IF there is no other option If they are on the road - getting traffic to slow down or encouraging the animal off the road BUT remember your safety is just as important!! If the animal does not move when approached it is injured or unwell Or if a baby (less than the size of a football) is crying or no mum in sight for at least 2 hours please call Ali 0428 785488 or MIFCO 0457 634 732

02.01.2022 By 11.30am today I have taken four (4) calls for injured birds within 24 hours. It's alleged that the birds were hit by a vehicle. Three were beyond saving. Fingers crossed for the latest victim. Is this a school holiday coincidence? Someone asked me this week why doesn't Sealink and the Barge company hand out flyers regarding the island wildlife because the video shown on board does not seem to make an impression.

02.01.2022 Are you interested in becoming a wild life carer? Give us a call on 0457634732. The official wildlife care group on the Island, Magnetic Island Fauna Care, is seeking new carers. To help our carers get up to speed, we send them to training through NQ Wildlife Care, who have an upcoming course on the mainland (just $10, money which goes towards wildlife care!).... If you are interested in joining our group and doing the upcoming training, give us a call on the new wildlife phone: 0457634732
