25.01.2022 Spring has sprung in Hunters Hill
24.01.2022 #WINDERMERE - 25 Ernest Street This house was the home of Jules Joubert after he left Villa Floridiana in 1857 and before he finished building Moocooboolah in 1864. Between his arrival in Hunters Hill in 1855 and the first Council ratebook in 1861, Joubert appears to have built Walshale, The Haven, Innisfree, Passy and Potsdam, now Windermere. ... In his book Shavings and Scrapes from Many Parts, he took full credit for having brought many workmen out from Lombardy and employing them in building stone houses; Jules brother Didier went on having houses built until his death in 1881 to the west of Joubert Street, and houses have been accredited to each brother according to the area in which they were built. It is notable that houses were first built on Figtree Farm, then to the east off Alexandra Street, finally to the west of the Figtree area, so that there could have been more joint effort than has been supposed. This property in Ernest Street was still part of Jules Jouberts estate in 1866, the year of his second bankruptcy, and was let to Mr S.T. Leigh (see 14 Mount Street). Leigh continued to occupy the house until 1867 when it was sold by the mortgagee for the sum of 900, to Andrew Lenehan, fine furniture maker. From 1883 to 1890 this was the vicarage of All Saints Church of England, occupied by the Rev Spry-Bailey. Majolica tiles brought from the Paris Exhibition decorate the verandah. Visit our new 'Heritage of Hunters Hill' Green Book website (with loads of historical info & photos) at greenbook....huntershilltrust.org au House history: Part of a Crown Grant to Susannah Nash (1836) was acquired by Count Gabriel de Milhau, a Frenchman, in 1854. He owned land and three houses and lived in Paraza, which was mentioned around 1863, although its style appears to be later. After the Municipality was declared in 1861 and the Council was formed, Gabriel de Milhau became its first Mayor. John S. Adams, draughtsman, owned the house from 1876; he sold to W.D. 18.01.2022 #Merilbah Alexandra St #HuntersHill The land on which this house is built was vacant in 1862 and belonged to Ambrose Foss. Gabriel de Milhau built the initial part of this house, a small cottage, and lived here in 1864. In 1866 he let it to William Owen who in 1869 built Ellesmere in Foss Street. ... Charles James Manning, barrister and later Supreme Court Judge, lived here in 1872. During 1881 the west wing was added. The house was then known as Sans Souci. In 1891 the eastern rooms were enlarged and a balcony added. The entrance porch also appears to be of that date. At his death in 1898, Charles Mannings widow moved to 19 Alexandra Street, taking the name Merilbah with her. Merimbah has been converted to units without noticeably altering the external character of the building.
17.01.2022 #Gladesville Mental Asylum The story of Gladesville Mental Hospital is the story of mental health in Australia.... From "out of sight, out of mind" and the belief that mental illness was permanent and untreatable, a succession of brave and pioneering staff brought about a revolution in the thinking, and in the treatment, of mental illness. Initial management of patients started with restraining them by chaining them to their beds at night, and building walls to stop them wandering and harming others. This progressed to the use of a garden environment and work as therapy. This led to the steady use of psychology, psychiatry and pharmacology, in the 19th and 20th centuries, up until the closure of the hospital in 1997. The story of Gladesville is not only one of mistakes and misery, but of learning, of bravery and of heroism, of brilliant minds and courageous staff who changed the system of mental health in Australia forever. 16.01.2022 This is what I love the most about our #HuntersHill & #Gladesville Community. Poor Shirley was so excited to celebrate her 90th Birthday Party with family and f...riends but due to Covid and Social Distancing restrictions Shirley had to cancel her party. Feeling very sad and lonely her thoughtful neighbour Katie Perry organised an outdoor party to sing Happy Birthday and drop her gifts. The outdoor gathering was attended by neighbours and local dignitaries such as MP Anthony Roberts handing her a congratulations letter from the PM Scott Morrison as well as footy legend DavidCampese11 who cooked spaghetti bolognese and Clr Zac Miles representing #HHCouncil. It was an awesome day one that Shirley would never forget
16.01.2022 What its like living in Hunters Hill in the 70s & 80s? I remember my first visit to Hunters Hill when I was a little girl, we had just returned to Australia fr...om Italy. I distinctly remember driving into this leafy suburb with tall trees and beautiful mansions in our beige Volvo Station Wagon. It was 1978 because I had just turned eight. As we drove into Mayfield Ave we were welcomed by Uncle G (Dads younger brother). He was the cool Uncle driving all the flashy cars over the years from Convertible Mercedes Benz to Red Carrera Porsches. We loved visiting Uncle G because we got to play with our cousins, there were so many of us together because five seperate families had moved into the area all related to one another either by blood or marriage. In fact I think most Italian families in Hunters Hill back in the 70 & 80s were either related or inter generational friends from the motherland. All I can remember is that we were in paradise. My younger sister & brothers would often play on the Streets of Mayfield Ave either hitting a cricket bat, running, skipping or riding a bike. Sometimes wed go to Uncle Ss place just three doors down on the waterfront and play in the boat-shed and take the dinghy out onto the Harbour. It was a different time we were free range kids allowed to hang out with our cousins and friends during the week and have sleepovers over the weekend. Life was bliss. In 1985 my parents finally bought their own home in Woolwich. We were so excited to be officially living in Hunters Hill and part of the Clan not just visitors anymore. We bought an an unusual house perched on a rock with 360 degree views of the Harbour. We loved that house because it was our home, even if it was run down and old and needing serious renovations. So many fond memories, the one that I recall the most was the way we all entered the house because no one ever went through the front door. Instead it was customary to walk on the side of the house, up the wooden stairs into the balcony and through the window of the TV room! It was hilarious, youd never knew who was visiting because youd see the leg first before the face. It could have been anyone a sibling, a friend, an Uncle or Aunt you just never knew. What can I say ..... crazy Italians. I guess everyone knew that the window was always unlocked and the best way to get into the house was through the window our unofficial entry door. So many fond memories and as a family we immersed ourselves into the community attended Church regularly and participated in many festivals. I went to the local High school Marist Sisters Woolwich and my younger siblings went to Villa Maria. I could go on and on and on but I just wanted to share with you what a wonderful childhood I had in Hunters Hill. So much so I convinced my husband at the time to live in the area so my children could experience it too. Im proud to say my children are fourth generation Hunters Hillians and that is why I fought so hard to Save Hunters Hill from forced Amalgamations. It was a David and Goliath battle and we won. Thats another story for another time until then adios amigos. Aurelia-Sophia Roman Current Resident of Hunters Hill.
16.01.2022 Mount St #HuntersHill William Wright owned a house on this site in 1861 and let it to Mrs Clapham, who provided accommodation for school children going to the Chapel Schoolhouse in Church Street. By 1864 it was let to Dr J. Gerard (see Eulbertie, Stanley Road) for 30 per year. In 1875 the name Anderson was on a map in this area. In 1878 J. Gerard bought the house from Wright for 1400; Gerard sold to Dr Henry Rickards in 1879 and the rate collectors description of the hous...e changed from five to thirteen rooms, stone, with two cellars on 2 acres, waterside, Drummoyne Street. The house was increased again in 1881 to seventeen rooms. From 1887 to 1900 His Honour W. Walker Gregory, of the Supreme Court, lived here.
