25.01.2022 To say we're a little obsessed with rainfall at Yeranda would be an understatement. We keep official daily rainfall records for the Bureau of Meteorology and being in a subtropical zone, regular high monthly rainfall is critical for the health of our bush. This graph shows monthly rainfall for the past three years plus the first two months of 2020. It has been a blessing to receive so much rain this year, considering that over 2019 ten out of twelve months had around half or less of average rainfall. Yesterday I spent the morning exploring Cow's Head Creek at the back of Yeranda and it was a joy to see the creek running strong and so much life returning to its little valley. I will post some pictures this evening.
25.01.2022 New flow track at the Dungog Common. Looks like a lot of fun!
25.01.2022 Why wouldn't you want to visit our beautiful region? Cameo by Dave at 2 mins.
23.01.2022 Incredible electrical storm here last night that passed through in three waves. It was a spectacular light show.
23.01.2022 The grass is greener in Main Creek.
22.01.2022 Today I discovered the tedium of cleaning cottages is immeasurably more bearable if it's done while enjoying a fine wine. Hooray for self-employment!
22.01.2022 Believe it or not, the common name for this tree is the Grey Gum. #nofilter
21.01.2022 In a few days time you can return to the beautiful Dungog region again for holidays. Come visit us!
21.01.2022 Sick of the lockdown? Sick of the city? From June 1st holiday travel is permitted again. An easy 2 1/2 hour drive north of Sydney, Yeranda is the ideal place to escape the stress of city life and relax. When you stay in one of our lovingly hand crafted stone and timber cottages you get to recharge in front of a warm fire and see the stars again. No mobile coverage or wifi means you can reconnect with your partner or family with only lush green bush and the sound of birdsong to distract you. Yeranda Cottages: It's the perfect place to relax, recharge and reconnect. Visit www.yeranda.com.au for further information including pricing and availability.
21.01.2022 You know you're doing something right when guests are leaving bottles of wine as a stamp of approval. *Future guests please note: This a perfectly acceptable way to show your appreciation for the services we provide at Yeranda. In fact it's encouraged. You may also leave tips in the form of craft beer and chocolate. Thanking you in advance. Dave.
20.01.2022 Time for a holiday. Support your local tourism industry and book a getaway now!
19.01.2022 I could rave all I want about how awesome Yeranda is but my opinion is inherently biased. So, don't take my word for it, this is what our recent Pindari guests had to say. Thanks to Scott and Karen for a glowing entry in the guest book. Also, if you feel like a chuckle, here's the Google "translate image to text" version. I think it's safe to say AI still has a long way to go. 18.01.2022 Good morning! Turn the sound up. Best alarm clock ever.
16.01.2022 It has been a super hot weekend but these lovely ladies braved the heat to celebrate at Pindari Cottage. Really glad we could help create some happy memories.
16.01.2022 I hope everyone is having a happy Mother's Day, despite the strange times we live in. It's a little frustrating that the NSW COVID-19 travel restrictions currently prevent us from hosting guests at our most popular time of year. However, all indications are that it won't be long until those restrictions are lifted. I'm expecting a flood of bookings once they are, so if you were planning on visiting some time over the next six months it would be sensible to reserve a cottage now. Because of the uncertainty around travel I'm currently accepting bookings without a deposit - when the restrictions are lifted I will request one. So get in quick, get in now, head to www.yeranda.com.au and get yourself a cottage! In the meantime, here's a pic of a young echidna that was wandering around near the house yesterday. It was super cute!
16.01.2022 Are you a mountain biker? The Dungog Common, just 20 minutes drive from Yeranda is fast becoming one of the hottest destinations for mountain biking in the Hunter region. Plenty of great opportunities for riding in Chichester SF adjoining Yeranda too.
16.01.2022 Just one of the extraordinary locals you're likely to meet when you stay at Yeranda. Found this beauty today while I was prepping Elouera Cottage for this weekend's guests. Moritz's Leaf Tailed Gecko, named for Craig Moritz, a legend of evolutionary biogeography, the field of study I devoted much of my working life to before shifting to Yeranda.
15.01.2022 Ros is enjoying sharing some of her nature pics to the Victorian Field Naturalists Club members. It is a great site to be on ...so many interesting things to see!
15.01.2022 Well, here we are again folks! First it was bushfires and drought. Now it's COVID-19. I have cancelled all April reservations and blocked out the bookings calendar. If everything pans out as predicted I will likely do the same for May and possibly June. This is our busiest time of year, coming off the back of a disastrous summer so it's a real kick in the guts but there are worse situations we could be in. When this has passed, please come and visit! Yeranda is looking spectacular after two months of good rainfall. And there's nothing like the great outdoors...after a long time indoors.
14.01.2022 Beautiful terrestrial orchid growing on the track to Nalleeghee Creek.
12.01.2022 On your next visit to Yeranda, make sure you check out Gallery on Dowling, run by our lovely neighbour Helene.
12.01.2022 What an extraordinary summer it has been! We miraculously avoided any bushfires but the very dry weather took its toll on many of our trees. Another couple of weeks and they may not have survived at all. A wet January and now an incredibly wet couple of days (125 mm of rainfall over a day and a half) has turned everything around. New shoots are sprouting from the eucalypts, Main Creek valley is emerald green again and mushrooms are popping up everywhere! Water is life!!!
11.01.2022 Baby jumping spider...so cute!
11.01.2022 I found this beautiful young lady by the side of the road in open farmland last night. After carefully considering the possibility she may be at risk from roaming dogs I shifted her to a safer place. It wasn't an orthodox translocation but it worked!
10.01.2022 Since June I've had an infra red wildlife camera set up between Pindari Cottage and the road. Here are a few images from it. We are very fortunate that Yeranda is home to a range of rare and threatened species. The cute little stocky marsupial that looks a bit like a bandicoot is a long nosed potoroo, listed as vulnerable because of habitat clearing and risk from predators such as foxes.
09.01.2022 A few days ago I went for a wander along Cow's Head Creek at the back of Yeranda. It was terrific to see the creek flowing again and fungi sprouting everywhere.
09.01.2022 Tall trees and blue skies await you. It's an absolutely beautiful day here today. We're fully booked over weekends and much of the midweek for the next five weeks but from then on there are plenty of opportunities to visit if you'd like to stay in Kalimna or Pindari Cottages. Elouera only has one weekend available between now and mid-October (August 21-23) so don't miss your chance if you are keen to stay in Elouera. Go to www.yeranda.com.au to book now!
07.01.2022 Sometimes you don't have to travel far from home to have an adventure...
07.01.2022 A week ago we had an electrical storm pass through in the morning which was a bit unusual - they almost always hit us in the afternoon or evening. The rain had passed, there had been no lightning/thunder for around 5 minutes when out of the blue what felt like an almighty explosion rocked the house. It was the loudest thunder I'd ever experienced here and a bit different - absolutely explosive like a bomb going off. As I was walking down to Nalleeghee Creek today I came acro...ss the spot where the bolt had hit. Most of an entire tree had been literally blasted to smithereens. There were enormous splinters cast up to 50 m from the impact point - shards of wood dried brittle by the electric shock. Lightning heats the air around it to 30,000 degrees which is hotter than the surface of the sun so it's no wonder the splinters appeared to be kiln dried. Some had been cast into other trees and some had sheared bark off trees in their way. It was a scene of absolute carnage. Lightning strikes account for around 5-10 deaths per year and 100 serious injuries in Australia. When you see the aftermath of a significant strike it's easy to see why. You wouldn't need a direct hit to be affected by a lightning strike like this!
06.01.2022 We're fully booked for school holidays but our lovely friends Dan and Verity at Wangat Lodge still have some spaces. Also, we can accommodate a maximum of 12 guests so if you're ever looking for a stay in our beautiful area with a large group, show them some love.
05.01.2022 Leaping lizards! This young tree skink fell onto me from the rafters of the outdoor shower while I was cleaning at Elouera Cottage today. What a beauty!
05.01.2022 Apart from the typo in the title, this is a great little promo for our town and region.
04.01.2022 One of our guests got more than they bargained for while staying in Elouera recently. Green tree snakes and tree skinks mating and a very tame bandicoot retuning nightly to dig for its supper. All within a few metres of the cottage! (Bandicoot in comments).
01.01.2022 What a momentous day for Pindari Cottage. The old Gasmate 3 burner that stood the test of time for more than 20 years has finally made its way to the great bbq graveyard in the sky (aka the Dungog tip). Replaced by this five burner beauty that, despite Dave's careful measurements, didn't quite fit into the bbq space. There may have been a few choice expletives uttered. There may have been a flurry of hammer and chisel and wonderment (frustration!) at the old school concept of permanently fitting a bbq into a defined space, rather than providing a mobile version that could be easily replaced. Nevertheless, future guests now have a bbq that, after a brief test run, pumps out more heat than the indoor wood fired heater! If you're cold, fire up the new barbie!!!
