24.01.2022 In 2000 the Independent Financial Adviser Magazine ran an article about a young lawyer from Hobart who was changing careers from the law to finance. We managed to find this in the archives and it has created significant amusement within the office.

24.01.2022 Today the Main Street Team participated in an online virtual cycling event with a number of other financial services firms around Australia on the ZWIFT platform. Despite suffering injuries, taking a wrong turn for 3 km and our coach having to come out of retirement we managed to complete the 50km uphill course. An enjoyable way to spend a few hours in a COVID19 world.

23.01.2022 This week we had one of our advisers Michael Fox’s birthday. We thought we would share some photos from over the journey of one of Main Street’s long standing employees. Michael’s journey has taken him from Main Street in Hobart to New York, finishing his post graduate studies and finding a career outside of painting, a career that looked destined to fail from the early days. We can thank an insider of the Fox family for the childhood photos.

23.01.2022 In the COVID19 environment today we ran a client webinar titled "What the past can teach us about navigating the current environment". Technology-enabled us to have clients throughout Australia join us, although our Advisors Charles Badenach and Michael Fox probably need to realise that they are not playing poker and should smile more. They were joined on the call by analysts from Morningstar. As Warren Buffet once famously said Every decade or so, dark clouds will fill the economic skies, and they will briefly rain gold. When downpours of that sort occur, it’s imperative that we rush outdoors carrying washtubs, not teaspoons. And that we will do.

22.01.2022 It not often we see 2 people at Main Street wearing the same sox in the same colour at the same time particularly when it is a male and female. However that is what happened today and it was all in the name of #movember . If the fashion police were in the office they would have reminded Charles Badenach that pink sox and a red tie clash.

20.01.2022 Having employees go above and beyond the call of duty for clients is something that is part of the Main Street DNA. However Michael J Fox went one step further coming into the office at 12.30am to set up his slow-cooked Lamb Roast so it would be ready 12 hours later for lunch. Every month we take turns at cooking for each other on our "Work on the Business Day", and today we had slow-cooked lamb wraps. An impressive effort followed by Cheese Cake and Chocolate Mousse. Not good for the waistline but an enjoyable lunch.

19.01.2022 Main Street were recently featured in the Money and Life Magazine on "Using technology to adapt to new working practices". In the modern world adapting to change is the new normal. It is hard to believe how far we have come since the iphone was invented on 29th June 2007 . ! https://www.moneyandlife.com.au//using-technology-to-adap/

19.01.2022 Today we had our first Client Webinar on "Market Volatility and the Corona Virus ". We even managed to practice the 1.5 m social distancing rule ! It is a changing world

17.01.2022 With over 23,000 financial advisers in Australia, our very own Charles Badenach has made the shortlist for the 50 Most Influential Financial Advisers in Australia for 2020. With Tasmania only having 2% of the Australian population it could be challenge for him to make the final list. However, if you would like to show your support, you can vote for Charles the link is - www.financialstandard.com.au/fspower50 Voting closes on the 11th September 2020

16.01.2022 In this new world of "social distancing" Charles Badenach was interviewed today about the financial impact of the Corona Virus on Retirees by industry leader Sherri Ring from the Home2Work program.

15.01.2022 What can you claim working from home ? The Australian Taxation Office (‘ATO’) has announced a temporary simplified short cut method to make it easier for individual taxpayers to claim deductions for additional running expenses incurred (e.g., additional heating, cooling and lighting costs), as a result of working from home due to the Coronavirus pandemic. Based on the announcement, the ATO will allow individuals to claim a deduction for all running expenses incurred during t...he period 1 March 2020 to 30 June 2020, based on a rate of 80 cents for each hour an individual carries out genuine work duties from home. The 80 cents per hour method is designed to cover all deductible running expenses associated with working from home and incurred from 1 March 2020 to 30 June 2020, including the following: Electricity expenses associated with heating, cooling and lighting the area at home which is being used for work. Cleaning costs for a dedicated work area. Phone and internet expenses. Computer consumables (e.g., printer paper and ink) and stationery. Depreciation of home office furniture and furnishings (e.g., an office desk and a chair). Depreciation of home office equipment (e.g., a computer and a printer). Furthermore, according to the ATO’s announcement, under the 80 cents per hour method: ( a) there is no requirement to have a separate or dedicated area at home set aside for working (e.g., a private study); (b) multiple people living in the same house could claim under this method (e.g., a couple living together could each individually claim running expenses they have incurred while genuinely working from home, based on the 80 cents per hour method); and (c) an individual will only be required to keep a record of the number of hours worked from home as a result of the Coronavirus, during the above period. This record can include time sheets, diary entries/notes or even rosters. Working from home running expenses that are incurred before 1 March 2020 (and/or incurred from this date where an individual does not use the 80 cents per hour method) must be claimed using existing claim arrangements. 13.01.2022 We arrived at work this morning to find the Boardroom had been declared a "Danger Zone" . We didn't realise working in financial services could be so dangerous. Could the 30th June be approaching ?

13.01.2022 We rarely post financial graphs on facebook but today we came across a few charts that really highlight the impact of the COVID19 which we thought might be of interest !

11.01.2022 This is by far one of the most valuable lessons for a happier life. Get inspired with this short film of a professor explaining to his class the importance of using one's time wisely and setting priorities in order to have a fulfilling life. A wise investment of 3 minutes of your time ! https://youtu.be/SqGRnlXplx0

11.01.2022 Charles Badenach was recently interviewed by Sherri Ring from Home2Work on how to manage some of the financial challenges that COVID19 has thrown up to us all.

09.01.2022 With an increasing number of our clients, friends and family working from home these infographics should hopefully be helpful as you transition to working remotely. Goodluck and stay safe everyone

09.01.2022 In a COVID19 environment we had a slightly different 30th June event this year with "Murder in the Hollywood Hills" in the Main Street Boardroom. It was an eventful evening with Rebecca being the victim of botox poisoning and Susie being found guilty of the crime. At this stage Susie after spending the weekend in custody could be a doubtful starter for Monday.

08.01.2022 Getting up at 4am every morning is not everyone's cup of tea, but the Bignell Family have been prominent members of the diary industry in Tasmania for decades. They produce great milk and we enjoy working with them as they continue to build the "Bream Creek Dairy" business.

05.01.2022 As we are all getting older and the business continues to evolve we have updated our corporate video. Whilst this is no Hollywood Blockbuster Premiere, we would like to thank everyone who assisted us in this process, it was outside the comfort zone for us all. You will be pleased to know that we are not in danger of losing any staff to Hollywood. https://youtu.be/57pYMKYmzns

04.01.2022 One of our advisers Charles Badenach was recently featured in the Money Magazine Article - Understanding your risk appetite : how much is too much ? An important issue in the current climate. https://www.moneymag.com.au/risk-profile-appetite-coronavir

01.01.2022 Macquarie Street Hobart - a very different outlook from 4 weeks ago !

01.01.2022 We have re-opened to a brave new world where - we have lost the handshake -the lolly jar and books have been removed from reception -the chairs around the Boardroom Table have reduced from 22 to 10... -now our lunchroom only offers "in house" dining for 2 rather than 8 -we have a COIV19 Safety Officer -we have a COVID19 manual than is bigger than our office manual -we now have hand sanitiser in every room and -over 25 "social distancing " and "COVID19" signs in the office. If someone had mentioned 6 months ago that this would be the situation in a professional office in Hobart we would have questioned their sanity. Suffice to say we are prepared for this strange new world.

01.01.2022 One of the benefits of working remotely in this unusual COVID19 environment is that your pets appreciate having you around more. At Main Street we have a wide range of animals as part of the extended family and here are a selection of the more favoured pets ! We have one staff member who lives on a farm at the Huon Valley and could not choose between her horse, chickens and dog.
