17.01.2022 Beginners who have only ever heard about the game of Bridge probably have no idea that in the world of technology today all the card dealing, scoring and results are all done by mechanical and electronic means. That is unless you are sitting at home playing around the kitchen table. When you attend a Bridge Session at a Club you will play between 24 and 36 hands of bridge. Around 3.5 to 4 hours of bridge. Each of these Hands is pre-dealt by a 'Card Machine' and the cards are... placed in 'Boards' and each table plays the same boards. Scoring is based on how you play against others at the session. Each table of 4 players has a device called a 'Bridgemate' and this communicates with a 'Server', connected to a computer. At the beginning and end of each hand, the winner of the bid is recorded and the result is entered and checked by one of the opponents. Depending on the 'movement' (e.g. playing a Howell or a Mitchell - which depends on how many players are present) you may play between 3-5 boards with the same opponents and then change. An accredited Bridge Director is present at sessions to resolve any disputes/ issues. Players play for Master Points and some very experienced players with over 1000 points are known as 'Grand Masters'. About 10 minutes after the sessions finishes the scores are displayed for all to see and immediately uploaded to the Club Website for those who didn't attend the session to see how everyone went. There's always time to grab a tea, coffee, soft drink and a biscuit and players often stay for 30 minutes afterwards for some refreshments and a chat before heading home.
