14.01.2022 A great local business story passed on by the Hunter Region Business HUB Branxton woman Michelle Dunn from Shelley’s Sweet Cakes was one of 21 businesses nominated for the Most Outstanding Sole Operator in the recent Hunter Local Business Awards. Michelle first came to the Hunter Region Business Hub in 2019 to find out more about the NEIS program and how it could help her to start her dream business. She wanted to start her own cake decorating business and wanted to make sure... she did it properly the first time. Michelle embraced the mentoring and support she received from the Hub and successfully completed the NEIS program in 2020 with a strong viable business. She also utilized the Hub’s Digital Business Solutions program where she received 1:1 business advice to help her improve her website as well as developing and implementing her digital marketing plan which she again embraced with great success. During Covid 19 as with many businesses, Michelle went into lockdown as people no longer needed specially decorated cakes for special occasions which couldn’t be held. She successfully pivoted her business to provide date night desserts as a unique service for local families. Michelle also developed a special occasion DIY cake kit, available online, so families all over Australia could celebrate special occasions at home.
