22.01.2022 The artworks left behind by prisoners have always fascinated visitors. Some exceptional artworks are unfortunately located in areas that aren’t accessible to the public. This painting, which is located in the Tailors Shop, is one of the artworks rarely seen due to its location on the wall in the old workshop building. What do you think about this painting? Would you like to see more?

16.01.2022 It's going to be a scorcher here in Maitland over the weekend. We are looking forward to welcoming visitors but want to remind you to be heat aware. As the site is both indoors and outdoors make sure you bring a hat, dress appropriately for the heat and bring your full drink bottle so you can stay hydrated. If you have any questions feel free to give us a call on 4936 6482.

15.01.2022 On first impression, you might think this hallway needs a good lick of paint (and our maintenance team member would agree), but this hallway tells a fascinating story of the many colours that B-Wing has been painted over the years. The dark line you see is called a dado line and was painted during the years of the separate system. It was used as an indicator for prisoners to keep their heads low, so as to not make direct eye contact with other prisoners. Thankfully this outdated system was abolished in 1905. Make sure you check out some of the interesting wall colours next time you visit Maitland Gaol.

13.01.2022 Interested in celebrating World Philosophy Day? Come along to the Maitland Gaol Auditorium on Thursday 19 November and engage in a deep thinking debate about The Myth of Freedom. The Hunter Valley Socratic Society in partnership with Maitland Library's Look Who’s Talking program explores the myth of freedom in modern times. We believe that fundamental freedoms are intrinsic to human rights, but the question remains are we really free? This free activity needs to be booked, so book now at https://mait.city/2UbdDyI

06.01.2022 Did you know A wing is the oldest building inside the sandstone walls? It housed the first 40 prisoners to move into the gaol in 1848 and was used continuously up until the sites closure 150 years later in 1998. However, you may not have known that A wing was also the last building on the site that prisoners were moved out of. You can find out more with a guided or self guided tour of the site or by visiting www.maitlandgaol.com.au
