25.01.2022 Over the past two weeks the Joeys have been using their senses to explore lots of messy, creative play. We began the fortnight with our planned activities of finger painting and play dough. As the fortnight progressed we extended on our children’s interests during these activities and extended on their learning in some interesting and exciting ways. Using a variety of different media we have investigated: *texture *smell *sound *volume *science *STEM skills Sensory play ...provides our children with opportunities to express themselves creatively and build their self confidence. These activities also strengthen motor skills, hand eye coordination, language and problem solving skills. These experiences can be linked to Gardner’s theories. He saw the arts and creativity as playing major roles in children’s learning, Children are able to explore many cognitive concepts through their play and creative explorations.

11.01.2022 Beetles and Bugs, oh my! Recently our Joey children have been keen investigators when exploring the world around them. During our children’s investigations they have discovered a variety of different insects in our garden. Each day we have been extending on our children’s interest in insects by; setting up an insect interest table in our room, going on bug hunts to see what insects are visiting, reading stories on insects and including insects into our creative art experience...s. Through these experiences we have been supporting our children to explore relationships with other living and non-living things and observe, notice and respond to change. We have loved seeing our children explore, infer, predict and hypothesise in order to develop an increased understanding of the interdependence between land, people, plants and animals, through their interest in insects. This is reflective of EYLF learning outcome 2 See more

11.01.2022 Take a look at what our Possum room have been involved in over the month of January (1-2 years) During the month of January the Possum room has been celebrating Australia Day by cooking Anzac Biscuits and painting the Australian flag, blue and red. We have been discussing the meaning behind Australia Day and what we love about Australia. This has sparked interests in the children's cultural backgrounds and where people come from around the world. Children’s contentedness and ...different ways of belonging with people, country and communities helps them to learn ways of being which reflect the values, traditions and practices of their families and communities. Over time this learning transforms the ways they interact with others. We have been learning about our 5 senses and exploring our tactile ( touch) senses through finger painting, Hard and soft sensory bags and warm and cold textures. Moving on to our olfactory (smell) senses we have been exploring flavoured tea infused play dough. Moving on to gustatory (taste) senses we will be exploring different fruits ranging from sweet to sour. Children use processes such as exploration, collaboration and problem solving across all aspects of curriculum. Developing dispositions such as curiosity, persistence and creativity enables children to participate in and gain from learning. Effective learners are also able to transfer and adapt what they have learned from one context to another and to locate and use resources for learning. See more

03.01.2022 It’s beginning to look a lot like.... Here at Maitland Kids, we have been celebrating a week of all things Christmas. From PJ day to getting a little wet and wild with our slip and slide. What a fun way to wave goodbye to 2020. Christmas week has been a blast for everyone.

03.01.2022 Take a look at what our Bilbies and Kookaburras (3-5) have been up to today... Educator Amelia set up the water play experience outside, as per the outdoor educational program. The activity is an extension on the children’s interests in water play opportunities. This experience is open ended, flexible and allows children to engage in critical thinking questions regarding water saving practices and nature play activities that develop sustainability within the service. The chi...ldren engaged in a discussion about why water is important for a healthy body and also how water keeps our plants and gardens growing big and strong. The children are observed playing in the water trough and moving on to watering the gardens outside. As educators we are scaffolding the children learning throughout this experience in order to give the children knowledge on this important topic and tools to incorporate these skills in their everyday living. Charli states to the group, at my home my daddy says we are on water restrictions. This sparked future conversations about how we can minimise water wastage around our service, in the community and at home. Children are learning and developing a deeper understanding about nature and how as a group and as a service, we can all contribute to a more sustainable future. How do you practice sustainability in your home??

02.01.2022 The possum room have recently been looking at the Dreamtime story How the birds got their colours. This story allowed the children to gain a deeper understanding of the aboriginal culture and practice. Educators view culture and the context of family as central to children’s sense of being and belonging, and to success in lifelong learning. Educators also seek to promote children’s cultural competence.... Cultural competence is much more than awareness of cultural differences. It is the ability to understand, communicate with, and effectively interact with people across cultures. The children were able to look and observe the front cover of the book while using their fine motor skills to get creative. Using the paint brush, the children painted glue onto the paper, and then chose coloured feathers to add. This activity allowed the children to develop colour recognition, literacy, verbal and listening skills as their educator read the story and repeated the colours. Families will be contributing family photos over the coming weeks which will represent a positive sense of identity for the children and will allow them to experience respectful, responsive relationships which strengthens their interest and skills in being and becoming active contributors to their world.

02.01.2022 What a fantastic afternoon we all had celebrating Maitland Kids end of year Christmas party The children were all smiles and laughs as they were seen jumping together on the jumping castles, dancing under the disco lights, exploring all the inviting resources and experiences in the environment and they were even more excited they got to meet SANTA Thank you to all the wonderful families that attended and made the afternoon so special. ... 01.01.2022 An integral part of human existence is understanding where you fit in the world. Relationships are a crucial aspect to gaining a sense of belonging and are developed and nurtured further when children interact with each other, their families and members of the community. Belonging shapes who children are and who they can become. They can identify themselves by belonging to their family, cultural groups, neighbourhoods and the community. When a child understands that they are ...part of a group or feel as though they are part of a family you know they have grasped the concept of belonging. Here in the Kookaburra’s room, Educators have taken a holistic approach, closely observing each individual child’s interest and learning listening and adding each child’s valued input to our program offering a great sense of Belonging. Educators in the Kookaburra’s room discussed with the children the importance of feeling valued and belonging and as a class further discussed how we could decorate our very own Belonging tree. The children’s valued input was to add photos and hand prints to the tree, this added a beautiful touch to the tree and reminds children that each and every single child that is in this room belongs. Our stick tree has been made from branches, that were gathered from the bush. It is a representation of the understanding of the children’s growing cultural competence. These comprise of attitudes, values and beliefs. Our hope is to fill the tree with respectful and culture based art, which all families can actively participate in. See more

01.01.2022 The 2-5 year old children have been actively engaged in the new interest area bugs. Indoors a table was created and decorated with interesting bugs of all colours and sizes, plants and leaves which has sparked conversation and investigation within the indoor and outdoor environment. This led to a group bug hunt during group time. So much fun! This afternoon some of the children were eager to continue exploring bugs with magnifying glasses. Curiosity was booming as t...hey ventured into the garden. Is there a bug Karson asked. Ricki replied I saw one over there pointing to the opposite side of the garden. While investigating in the garden Emily discovered baby capsicums growing. I wonder if the bugs were eating the capsicum for their dinner?? #maitlandkids #daycare #childcare #kids #bugexploration #discover #learn See more

01.01.2022 Take a look in to our beautiful Koala room (0-1) As we head into the second month of the year, the educators have attuned their attention to children’s thoughts and feelings, supporting the development of a strong sense of well being. We make it our priority to develop nurturing relationships and provide children with consistent emotional support which will assist them in developing the skills and understandings they need to interact positively with others. They also help ch...ildren to learn about their responsibilities to others and to appreciate their contentedness and interdependence as learners. In the Koala room there is never a shortage of cuddles and comfort and it is evident that the children have built these beautiful relationships already and feel a sense of belonging. We are also excited to Welcome educator Heidi into the Koala room who will be working alongside Tiah. (EYLF, Principle 1. SECURE, RESPECTFUL AND RECIPROCAL RELATIONSHIPS)
