22.01.2022 Governments should have space to run policy trials, including with the use of new technology. But with that power comes the responsibility to honestly assess th...e outcomes and to change policy when the trial doesn't achieve its aims, or causes more harm than good. The Australian government has failed in this duty, pushing forward with automated debt collection for nearly three years after senior officials became aware of the program's serious flaws. Robodebt was canned only in the face of mounting legal challenges (https://www.theguardian.com//robodebt-court-documents-show). The next target is the Indue cashless welfare card. The original trial of the card didn't collect enough data to show whether it was improving lives, but the trial was extended to more regions anyway (https://www.abc.net.au//cashless-welfare-audit-fi/10005214). "Mutual obligations" (proof of job search activities) look set to resume at the end of this month, even though there are many more job seekers than jobs (https://www.theguardian.com//australias-jobless-to-face-mu). These ineffective, wasteful and cruel policies must go. Join the Science Party for welfare policies aimed at providing straightforward, genuine assistance to people who need it. People can be their best when they aren't worrying about keeping a roof over their heads. https://www.scienceparty.org.au/join
16.01.2022 If children can't go to excursions because parents don't actually have cash to give them, this is a negative outcome for their education and society. If a perso...n on welfare can't buy second hand goods (like books and furniture) because they have no cash, this is a negative outcome for society. The maximum amount of cash a welfare card user can transfer to their bank is $200 every 28 days. That's just $7.27 a day. The Science Party strongly opposes forcing the cashless welfare card on all welfare recipients. The cashless welfare card hasn't demonstrated a grand improvement in the rates of alcoholism and drug addiction. Even if it did, it is unjust to make all welfare recipients, almost all of whom are law abiding and good people, face the stigma, inconvenience and increased cost of living associated with the welfare card.
01.01.2022 From Andrea Leong Ever suggested that our government should invest in something that makes life better for Australians, only to be challenged with the question, "Who's going to pay for it?" We can talk about borrowing and taxation some time, but until there are no more fossil fuel subsidies, there's an easy answer to that question!... The federal government subsidises fossil fuels to the tune of $12 billion per year: https://www.marketforces.org.au/campaigns/ffs/. -- Image: Two news headlines: "Adani mine would be 'unviable' without $4.4bn in subsidies, report finds "(August 2019) and "NDIS funds to be 'repurposed' for drought relief under Morrison plan" (October 2018).
