22.01.2022 Updated Rules!!! As one member suggested I add this to the updated rules, this rule will be enforced from now on. ATTENTION ALL NEWBIES! (added another Newbie... must before buying alpacas! See below) DO NOT BUY A MALE FEMALE PAIR of alpacas when starting out! Kind of becoming very common place lately that AWFUL, irresponsible breeders STICK new owners with a male female pair of alpacas as their first purchases. Males & Females CANNOT be kept together even if the male is gelded. He will literally breed that female to death, he will breed her when pregnant causing abortion, he will breed her and possibly kill her newborn cria if she carry's full term. He might just kill a male cria because he sees it as competition. PLEASE do your homework, a breeder that will sell you a mixed pair is NOT a breeder to buy from. Once sale is made they are finished with you. I'm going to pin this for awhile for prospective new owners that have not yet purchased alpacas before joining our group can read this. It is so important. To separate them after purchase requires all new fencing, shelters ect! A very expensive undertaking. Newbie must #2 Before you buy ANY alpacas, make sure you have a vet close by that will take camelids on as patients!!! Guess what, they do get sick, accidents happen, dystocia births happen, and you also need MEDS from a VET! It does no good to come to this site asking for help when number 1, we (with a couple exceptions) are not vets and we can only suggest but not seeing the alpaca first hand we really have NO IDEA whats really wrong with it! 99% of the time your going to need prescription Meds. Unless you establish a working relationship with a LOCAL vet we cannot get you any meds, maybe we can "suggest" but once again we ARE NOT VETS! Don't even THINK about breeding and having cria without a LOCAL vet. Even in a non emergency situations they need prescription drugs! Somewhere, somehow, sometime, you will need a local vet and if you do not call around to vets in your area to see if any are experienced in dealing with alpacas, you will eventually most likely have dead alpacas. Do this BEFORE you have alpacas, we can't help you in an emergency! Please do your homework before taking on the responsibility of unusual livestock like alpacas, that have different needs than most other livestock. NO PETTING ZOO POSTS! I personally have seen awful alpaca, and animal abuse in petting zoos. There are many other sites to post your "cute" petting zoo posts on, this is no longer one of them. People forget about all the cria and other babies taken from their mothers to be bottle raised so they will be friendly toward people, they forget about beserk animals that come from that raising, that have to be euthanized, they forget about animals cramped together in 10 x 10 area so they can't escape people even if they wanted to. That is how they live their lives, it's not a temp situation. If you want kids to get a farm experience take them to a farm not a petting zoo. HUGE difference between farm tours, alpaca shows and petting zoos.

17.01.2022 Almost every day, a video comes across my Facebook feed of an adorable baby alpaca in someone's house or going for a walk in a neighborhood. These cute videos a...re going viral, and are starting a dangerous trend of everyone wanting to cuddle an alpaca or getting one as a "pet". Let me share my story with you. We had our first cria, Popcorn, born on our farm 5 years ago. I was determined to be his "person," and I succeeded. Popcorn imprinted on me and we were inseparable. Fast forward to a few years later, Popcorn started exhibiting dangerous behaviors, such as jumping up and ramming into me. After consulting our vet, we learned that Popcorn was showing signs of Beserk Male Syndrome. This happens when camelids (alpacas, llamas, camels) imprint on humans and considers them a fellow alpaca to dominate. This is also known as Aberrant Behavior Syndrome as it can also happen with Females! Popcorn has almost broken my ribs several times and has injured other family members and friends. No amount of training or discipline will ever truly "fix" him. PLEASE, THINK TWICE BEFORE SHARING THESE VIDEOS. I know they are cute and make your heart happy, but it is NOT normal or healthy to have alpacas as house pets or cuddle buddies. It is just starting a dangerous trend that will result in aggressive behaviors in these animals. They are also causing people to go out and purchase an alpaca as a "house pet", which would create a very depressed and even sick animal, as they are herd animals and should not be alone! PLEASE SHARE TO SPREAD THE WORD!
