25.01.2022 How crazy was 2020? Enough people have highlighted all the surreal things that happened this year. Most of which stem from a pandemic that’s still upending many parts of the world. While a fortunate few had a great year, many have been hit in ways they never imagined. Plus, the near future is still clothed in uncertainty.... So as we yawn into 2021, I’d like leave you with a slightly different thought. Was. If you lookup the word smallpox, it’s often followed by word ‘was’. Smallpox was an infectious disease. This simple 3-letter word encapsulates the collective ingenuity of the human spirit to create clever solutions to seemingly existential problems. It captures our resilience and ability to adapt. Our ability to turn present day problems into words that live in encyclopedias. All thanks to the conscientious among us. Eventually, this too shall pass. And when the dust settles, I look forward to the day we use ‘was’ to define this period. Until then, I wish you a kinder, calmer, and hopefully, better 2021. #HappyNewYear

05.01.2022 Earlier this year Strength Group invited us to bring our sustainability expertise to a major renovation of the old Anglican Churchlocated in Nunawading. Big picture: The design intent was to infuse a modern look while retaining the original building form. Makao applied our usual process of discovery - simulation - and reporting. And as with all projects, we tapped into our experience in similar community and public buildings to help the client achieve their goal. What we di...d: We handpicked sustainability initiatives suitable to the project’s design intent and constraints. Here's a quick look: We deep dived into water sensitive urban design. Here, we explored how to manage and improve stormwater quality from the roofs and car parks before leaving the site. Then how to promote water conservation (internal use), and reduce potable water use from the mains. Investigated how the design respects a lot of the existing form, with minimal change to the existing structure and reduce demolition waste. Waste that may have ended up in landfill. Another key feature of this design relates to internal amenity. Particularly, incorporating passive approaches that minimise use of mechanical systems. This included: Natural ventilation for fresh air supply, an energy efficient building fabric, and plentiful natural lighting to indoor spaces. And then wrapped together these and other initiatives into a sustainable management plan. Which then went on to support the development application for town planning permission.
