25.01.2022 MEET THE ARTIST In the gallery today meet one half of the Designer Dirt creative duo, Jane Michael. Here Jane shares her story about their love of creating sculptures and custom made outdoor and garden art. Growing up on a farm south of Kojonup, I've always loved art and nature. I thought about becoming a graphic designer when I finished school, but went down a different road, due to a lack of opportunities - and to be honest a lack of confidence- at the time.At Designer Dirt..., I enjoy being able to create occasionally, by combining my love of gardening and art using recycled materials, different special effects paints and various metals, including corten steel, to create art that looks like it belongs in a particular environment. I also able to enjoy the graphic design side of things with our work, as I do all our marketing. Ian Michael, the other half of Designer Dirt shares his story. I grew up on farms and stations in the Northern Wheatbelt and the Gascoyne. I've always considered myself more inventive than artistic, something that's happened out of necessity, when fixing things with limited options, usually in the middle of nowhere.Since starting Designer Dirt I have been able to have more fun with that creativity and I really enjoy making metal sculptures out of scrap on hand.I always try to include recycled elements in my work that have meaning and relevance to each piece, especially if it's a commission. If I have access to a person's scrap pile it can help give that artwork a special relevance.Sometimes I'm lucky enough to find a piece of cast off metal that immediately inspires me to create something new. Designer Dirt also conduct a wide variety of workshops including welding, special paint effects, cyanotype printing and succulents. @designerdirtalbany Facebook: Designer Dirt . #makeascenealbany

24.01.2022 MEET THE ARTIST In the gallery today meet Susan Merli. Susan is a multi skilled and talented artisan who has recently joined Albany's Make a Scene Artist Collective.... Originally from Johannesburg South Africa she started experimenting with art when she emigrated to Australia. Susan works in a wide range of mediums including knit and weave wire and textiles, clay, mixed media on surface, and 3D objects. Her work is inspired by humour and pathos. She is mostly self-taught, and her work has often been described as outsider art. Many of her early paintings are abstractions of floral landscapes. Susan’s work has been exhibited and sold all around Australia, gaining several awards along the way. Her current work depicts bright and bold figurative narratives ranging from mini paintings to giant canvases, offering a unique perspective, some of which can be seen in the collection here at Make a Scene Artists Collective pop up shop at 190 York Street, Albany WA. @merli_raw_art [email protected] #makeascenealbany
22.01.2022 MEET THE ARTIST In the gallery today meet Ros Jenke. Ros is another artistic member of the Make a Scene team. An enthusiastic outdoor painter she can be found painting and sketching somewhere outdoors in or around Albany each week, painting all manner of subjects from the amazing south coast scenery, beaches, local landmarks and historical buildings. ... Often her paintings are small, quick sketches but sometimes she will take the full kit, easel, board and painting supplies for a larger painting. Always interested and dabbling in art Ros originally trained in Architectural drafting, then going on to landscape drafting before changing direction to paint and teach Acrylic Decorative painting and Calligraphy for many years in Perth, interstate and overseas. During that time she also wrote and published two popular teaching books on the art. Ros also now enjoys working with a wider variety of styles and mediums, including watercolour, gouache and pastel, and her subjects can vary from landscape, still life, flora and fauna, to commissioned portraits. In 2017 Ros was accepted into the Watercolour Society of WA. and has recently taught a series of watercolour classes at the Vancouver Arts Centre. In the gallery Ros has a series of watercolour sketches of local scenes plus a collection of delightful mini watercolours of birds. In addition to her paintings she has recently started delving into making hand painted clay jewellery pendants, experimenting with different techniques such as imprinting, embossing, mosaic and vivid alcohol ink surfaces. You can visit Ros at Make a Scene today and see her art work along with a range of art prints and cards of her original art. @rosjenkeart Facebook : Ros Jenke Art Website : rosjenke.wordpress.com/ . . . #makeascenealbany
22.01.2022 MEET THE ARTIST In the gallery today meet another of our creatives, Annie Johnson. Annie Johnson has lived in Albany for thirteen years and has immersed herself in the artist community. She has been continuing her journey with encaustic wax painting, which is the process of heating beeswax with damar resin and paint pigment and painting with this luscious feel and a scent of beeswax makes the artwork a 4D sensory experience. Finding there are very few boundaries between 2D ...and 3D work with this medium, she has been exploring her desire to incorporate textiles, inks, stitching and collage materials in sculpture and paintings. Native flora, especially Banksia, features regularly in her work, ranging from pyrography, or wood burning, eco dying silk scarves with native flora, dying on watercolour paper with hand drawn detail highlighting the shapes within a landscape, and print making and stitching on canvas. Annie has also been experimenting with different techniques over the last 12 months and has recently learnt how to make silk paper which is so resilient you can machine and hand sew on this surface as well as draw and paint also. You can find some of these new results at the Make a Scene Artists Collective pop up shop at 190 York Street, Albany WA. Her collage pictures, watercolour paper and silk paper journals are in the store also, along with her range of essential oil soy wax candles set in antique crystal to make them sparkle. Annie is constantly exploring the boundaries of art and textiles as we know it and coming up with her own interpretation. You can follow her on Instagram on @anniesartvisionstudio Workshop enquires email [email protected] #makeascenealbany

17.01.2022 MEET THE ARTIST Pop into the gallery today and meet Katy Shekell.Katy makes beautiful bath and skin care products that often visually reflect aspects of our environment and reminds us of fruits, flowers, landscapes, textures and more - all delicately perfumed. Her soaps are lovingly made in small batches from high quality ingredients and no piece of soap is the same. Here Katy shares her amazing soap making story. Making soap began as a creative outlet and the more I learned... about it the more I enjoyed it. I had always had sensitive skin and wanted to use products that I knew contained the kind of pure and gentle ingredients that would not aggravate sensitive skins. After researching the methods of soap making, and experimenting with oils and scents I began to work on designs. I didn’t just want all my products to simply nourish and care for my skin. I also wanted them to be unique, and to look, feel and smell beautiful. I wanted to enjoy using them myself, and hoped anyone who saw them would find them irresistible and tempted to try them to feel the difference they made. I have tried to make my soaps the very best they can be by combining my creativity with only the best high quality, and as many as possible natural ingredients. I also customise products or create special batches, such as soap favours for weddings or baby showers. I place a great deal of importance on affordability of my products as well as sustainability of packaging and ingredients used. I offer a refund system for large glass containers my products come in as well as refills for the aluminum tins. Workshops are available for Cold Process Soap Making Feb 23 and 25, as well as fun kids workshops. https://www.facebook.com/artisansoapworks/ https://www.instagram.com/artisansoapworks/ https://artisansoapworks.com.au #makeascenealbany

09.01.2022 MEET THE ARTIST In the gallery today meet Tania Porter. Tania is a glass artist living and working in Denmark in the south west region of WA. ... Her glass work is a response to journeys she’s been through and places she’s been to. She makes precious, one-off and limited-edition studio glass that has a personal narrative and is heavily influenced by the natural environment. In contrast, scientific experiments of cell cultivation in laboratories are also an inspiration for this exhibition. Fluid and intriguing shapes, captured foliage and lush colours abound in her work, which has an abstract emotional quality with a highly finished surface, subtly of colour and seductive tactility. Tania has exhibited both within the state and overseas in London. After three years of jewellery courses Tania discovered glass and has been studying its mysteries for close to twelve years. She uses many processes, focusing mostly on kiln formed, fused and slumped glass. Her work has been constantly changing and evolving into decorative and functional works in glass, as well as obsessively crafted wall panels of varying dimensions from glass and various metals including silver and gold. website www.moofluki.com FB: Mookfluki Studio Instagram: @moofluki_studio
