One of our favourite tools is the MOBO Board, a unique balance board that pivots on the axis of pronation & supination, while requiring the user to activate through their big toe (the first ray of the foot). 24.01.2022 I have been asked if Make Moves Studio is still open due to the new rules around social distancing. The answer is a BIG YES! The rules around social distancing are aimed at preventing too many people crowding into a confined area. At Make Moves Studio we have a maximum of 4-5 students in each class and plenty of space (78m2) to work within. Under the new rules our maximum head count would be 19 people, so clearly we are at no risk of the Studio becoming overcrowded. :) Class...es are continuing to run according to our regular schedule. 23.01.2022 I don’t know what the name of this exercise is but it reminds me of Saw in Pilates. Think I’m going call it Windmills ha ha. Anyway it feels great to do. . Tips: really reach out as you rotate and hinge; try to keep your trail arm at shoulder height; keep your chin tucked and head retracted to maintain length in your spine; focus on form and a sense of connection to your body, rather than just going through the motions haphazardly. . 21.01.2022 Need a way to challenge your balance? Try this idea! Position two yoga blocks so that they make an equals sign (=) with a 5-10cm gap between the blocks. Next stand on the blocks using one leg, making sure you place the heel of one foot on the back block, and ball of the foot (including all the toes) on the front block. (The high point of your arch or mid-foot should *not* be in contact with either block.) Take a dowel or stick and slowly raise it up and down in front of you...r body, being sure to not flare your low ribs, arch or round your low back, lean off to one side, or in any other way deviate from a tall upright posture. You will not only challenge your balance but light up your core and help to strengthen the ankle of the supporting leg. Called Hindu Squats I understand that they are used by Indian wrestlers as a part of their exercise regime and for warming up. Regardless, they are quite cardiovascular and present a good challenge to your balancing and coordination skills. And done with awareness you can get a nice glute pump also, ha ha. . 17.01.2022 Dear Students and Friends of Make Moves Studio, as I’m sure most of you are aware, the Studio has been shut down as a part of the National Cabinet’s nation-wide strategy to slow the spread of the COVID-19 virus that is wreaking havoc across the planet. . If you were on a direct debit program it has been suspended. If you were on a 5, 10, or 20 class pass, the expiry date has been extended indefinitely until we emerge from the shut down. . However, I am active and working on... ways to support you at home! . One way will be through online 1-1 sessions and group sessions conducted through the Zoom app. . Another will be (weather permitting), small group movement classes outside in a local park. . Finally, I am still retailing the various props and tools we commonly incorporate into classes, including the Glute Loops, Yoga Tune Up massage balls, Pilates circles, small hand weights, and resistance bands. . Please stay tuned for an email early next week. . These are unprecedented times and we need to stay positive, support one another, and practice kindness and patience. 16.01.2022 Our client Tertia makes this very challenging exercise combining the lunge/split squat movement pattern, a sideways pull from the resistance cord, and balancing on the MOBO Board look easy! With it she is building anti-rotation core strength, leg and hip strength, and ankle and foot strength, all while improving her sense of balance. My approach to yoga is: unconventional, non-traditional, influenced by numerous teachers I trained with, and my attempt to provide an interesting movement practice that addresses the needs of 21st century humans who spend vast amounts of their lives at desks,... behind computer screens, looking at their phones, and dealing with daily stress. . There’s a bit of stretching (not extreme), lots of mobility work, and a big focus on strengthening those areas that tend to become weak, neglected, underworked, or overworked, in daily life. . I love to incorporate elements of movement practices I find helpful to me personally, including Pilates, Original Strength, Animal Flow, Yoga Tune Up, and more. . It’s more about learning to move well and feeling good in your body than achieving some specific shape or pose. I question everything, constantly, rather than just accepting. 14.01.2022 Lots of leg and glute work happening in the Studio the past couple of days, including hamstring strengthening on the second of our new items of functional equipment, the Nordic Hamstring Curl Machine. This device allows users to do a reverse Hinge (a traditional Pilates mat and Reformer exercise). It builds tremendous strength in the hamstring tendons and is great for hamstring injury prevention. Also shown are Side Splits on the Reformer and Step Ups on the Wunda Chair. 10.01.2022 People have asked whether or not we still are open given the most recent round of social isolation rules. The answer is a big YES! . The new rules are designed to limit overcrowding in confined spaces. At the Studio we have 78m2 of space which allows for a theoretical maximum number of 19 bodies in the room. As our classes are a maximum of 5 students we easily come in under this limit. We are practicing good sanitizing of all our props and equipment and making the Studio as s...afe a location as is possible for everyone who attends. . 03.01.2022 Do you sometimes find it difficult to either activate a muscle or perceive a muscle working? Try giving the muscle or region in question some light percussive therapy! . Percussion or rhythmically tapping an area, sends vibrations into the thousands of sensory nerves that lie in the skin and the fascia (connective tissue) that surrounds muscle fibers. This in turn helps your central nervous system to better hear the region being percussed. . Percussion is an ancient therape...utic technique found in Nuad Boran (traditional Thai Massage) and other bodywork practices emanating from Asia. . Here I am demonstrating how to wake up the musculature of the middle back (the rhomboids, and middle to lower trapezius) using a light air-filled ball for its springy effect but many other tools work well, including modern massage guns (eg Theragun). . It requires a lot more effort (filming and re-filming to get things correct) when taking videos of myself, as compared to videos of clients. Nevertheless here is an example of some of the shoulder strengthening and mobility exercises we have been exploring in our online Pilates classes the last week or so. There are so many ways to change up this sequence as well as add on new bits and pieces. It’s fun to chall...enge your memory as you tack additional moves on. I get lost sometimes!
