25.01.2022 Say hello to our incredible partners and panelists for our 2020 Maker’s Conference, Angela D’alton and Renée Baker from D'alton Baker Productions https://daltonbaker.com.au/ ! These two absolute powerhouses in the sustainable maker and design community of Australia have helped us put together a special weekend full of events for the up-and-coming maker. D’alton Baker Productions provide mentoring and other services such as design services and events to support the independent... art and design industry in Australia. This duo is seriously endlessly talented with more experience in this industry than I can summarise Angela (pictured left), with over 25 years of experience, launched her website https://buff.ly/3h7nYVJ in 2007 - a webstore and blog dedicated to Australian makers. From there, she became the Community Manager in charge of Seller Education at Etsy. With much success at Leeloo and Etsy, Angela proceeded to arrange many large scale events including Etsy Success Sydney (featured in VIVID Sydney 2012) and work with events businesses including Garage Sale Trail and The Finders Keepers. Angela has been featured in or interviewed by many huge names (see our full panelist bios on our website). Renée (pictured right) has spent over 10 years getting to know the maker and design industry. Having built the social media presence for Etsy Australia and Koskela, whilst making The Finders Keepers social media following what it is today, Renée as an artist and maker herself empathises with the small creative businesses, and knows what it takes to be a success in this field. Renée’s illustrations and design work have been published in big magazines as well as in designs across Sydney (more details on our website). This is just a glimpse into all the knowledge that these two hold - we cannot wait for them to share what they know with us! They will be featured as panelists on both Saturday, and Sunday (October 10th & 11th) - if you would like to hear more about and from this talented duo, head to our website and grab your ticket! https://buff.ly/2ZhE8pa #makersconference #sydneycraftweek #innerwestcreatives #innerwestmakers #sydneymakers #sydneycreatives #makersofsydney#sydneycraft#makersmovement

24.01.2022 Who is MakerSpace & Co.? I'm sure those using MakerSpace & Co. are familiar with a few of the faces around the place. We have Nadine Sharpe, our Education Program Manager, who looks after all our classes and Kim Ligers, Building and Memberships Manager, who is responsible for the tenancies, workshops, buildings and people who use the space as tenants and members. Then we have Remy, our Ceramics Manager, who is responsible for the running of our popular ceramics studio and ...Sean, who is our new wood, metal and digital workshop manager. We also have Zoey (hi!), who handles our social media and runs some classes. As well as this, as a Not for Profit, we have the governing structure, which currently consists of Kris Spann, our previous CEO, and Bruce Jefferies, one of the original founders of MakerSpace & Co. We all feel strongly that MakerSpace & Co. is an important resource for the Inner West creative community. We provide a unique opportunity for makers to explore their passions and ideas. Our facilities are well managed, affordable and accessible to people with little or no previous experience, all the way to those who are experts in their trade. We provide access to tools and equipment that can otherwise be out of reach to small makers. We are a community of likeminded individuals who feel passionate about making this work, and love the fact that we have been able to grow a community of makers through our tenants, members and students over the last 5 years. During the 2020 Makers Conference we will be providing a tour of our facilities, so you can see just what we are all about. You never know, you may find your place at MakerSpace & Co! #australiandesigncentre #sydneycraftweek #makersconference #sydneycraftweek #innerwestcreatives #innerwestmakers #sydneymakers #sydneycreatives #makersofsydney #sydneycraft #makersmovement #innerwestartists #makersgonnamake #makerscommunity #innerwestcouncil #sydneycraftweek #makerspaceandco #makerspace

Oliver is the incredible maker behind his business that designs, fabricates, and sells handmade timber furniture and leather goods Creativity runs rich in Oliver’s family. With over a decade of comm...ercial furniture production, Oliver’s own style is definitive. Using hand tools coupled with modern tools, Oliver creates furniture which is both beautiful and current, while being made to last generations, going against the grain of disposable modern culture, expressing his core desire for each unique piece to be used and loved. Oliver takes a sustainable approach, finding unique pieces of timber and leather, some of which are reclaimed and repurposed. Our workshop also prioritises non toxic finishes and maintains a low impact on the environment - something that Oliver passionately supports. 12.01.2022 Meet our fabulous 2020 Maker's Conference panelist, Nikita! Nikita Margarita is the powerhouse behind jewellery label Doodad+Fandango. D+F is the plastique fantastique jewel in the Australian wearable art crown, creating distinctive, colour-pop statement pieces that adorn creatives, kooks and couture-lovers across the globe. Designer and jeweller Nikita Majajas has been exploring renegade aesthetics since the 90’s as a fashion designer, shoe-maker and costume stylist sp...ecialising in outrageous self-expression, explosive colour and highly playful forms. Defying fast fashion, D+F pays homage to the bakelite and celluloid costume jewellery of the 1930s and 50s, when glamour was about quality not quantity. Made-to-order using only collector’s-grade materials (locally sourced where possible), each piece is sintered and meticulously inlaid by hand in Nikita’s Sydney-based studio. They’re designed and destined to become a treasured family heirloom, just like your Nan’s bakelite. D+F has collaborated on special projects with Romance Was Born, Gorman, Google, Zimmerman, Camille Walala and Lynnie Z and is collected by creative influencers such as Boy George, Kelly Osbourne, Katherine Sabbath, Tess Holiday, Penelope Gwen and countless others who straddle the blurry lines between art, fashion and activism. 12.01.2022 There is one thing that conference organiser, Nadine Sharpe, has learnt as a maker, and that we all are asking the same questions. The struggle is real. How do we fit time to make around our busy lives, how do we know if our product is good enough, how do we make ourselves known, how do we look, what do people think about us, where do we sell our product and how do we know when this could be a thing? These are just a few of the questions we ask ourselves lying in bed at nig...ht. At MakerSpace & Co., we are lucky because we are part of an amazing makers community. We hear our members comparing notes and asking these lofty questions all the time. But if you are just starting out, or don't have that network of creatives around you, it can be a lonely journey. This is why the Makers Conference was born. To bring all types of small makers together, regardless of where they are at in their creative journey. It is so inspiring to hear from other makers and to just hang out with creative people. We want to inspire, inform and spark joy amoung our maker community, so we hope to see you there! #makersconference #sydneycraftweek #innerwestcreatives #innerwestmakers #sydneymakers #sydneycreatives #makersofsydney #sydneycraft #makersmovement #innerwestartists #makersgonnamake #makerscommunity

07.01.2022 A huge congratulations to our studio tenant Alicia Zhao @studiozhao !!! Alicia will be exhibiting at May Space from the 11th until the 29th of November - with a special opening event tomorrow! Alicia's works are a marvel to witness in person, so if you happen to be in Sydney, head to May Space to see some of Alicia's incredible sculptures Alicia's work is less concerned with concept-based art, rather her practice is deeply rooted in process and an active engagement with ma...terials. Much of her creation is about relinquishing her control over the artwork and allowing it to unfold naturally giving rise to spontaneity. For Alicia, materials are not lifeless matter but contain an inner energy that she seeks to draw out. She feels compelled to create works, rather than creating from her own volition. For more details about this exhibition, head to mayspace.com.au

07.01.2022 Say hello to the incredible host and panelist of our Maker's Conference, Nadine Sharpe! http://www.ownsweettime.com.au/ Nadine has taken the long road to realise her passions, but that’s fine, because she’s right where she should be now, combining her passions of teaching and jewellery. With a background in HR and Training, it took a really shit job for Nadine to realise that she’d been trying to fit a square peg in a round hole and that the corporate world wasn’t for ...her. And so began her exploration of jewellery... Starting out making from bought components, the desire to make her own pieces led Nadine to explore a range of mediums, starting out with polymer clay, then moving on to resin, and ending up with metal. She was lucky enough to start teaching jewellery making in 2015, which saw her collaborating with a range of creative spaces in Sydney and beyond. Nadine loves nothing more than to help someone gain skills and confidence in their chosen creative pursuits. Sometimes it can take a simple tip to help someone fly, other times it can mean working closely with a creative to solve a problem and realise a vision. There is nothing more satisfying than helping someone achieve their vision. Nadine’s idea for the Maker’s Conference stemmed from her own challenges when establishing her creative practice, and from many conversations with fellow creatives. These challenges are universal when taking a hobby or passion and building it into a successful creative practice. How do you build your profile on social media, where do you sell your products, how to get into the big design markets or into retail, how to take professional photos that are going to get your products noticed. Her original idea was ‘wouldn’t it be great to run a Small Maker class that would answer all these questions’. And then suddenly, the Maker’s Conference was born! Nadine also wears the hat of Education Manager here at Makerspace & Co. She's seen countless of makers go through their journeys, and she can't wait to share with all of you all the important steps along the way!

06.01.2022 What are your biggest challenges as a maker? Speaking to our makers here at MakerSpace & Co., we sense that the most common challenges as a maker could be boiled down to the four C's. Creativity, Confidence, Customers and Cash Flow. Creativity - One of the challenges for a new maker is to find their niche, to be making a product that has their own personality injected in to it, that is different from other products in their market. Look at the successes in your market and y...Continue reading
