20.01.2022 A team of Sydney volunteers have been working on a number of new activities to compliment our on water programs. Making Waves Ashore is a suite of sailing inspired team activities that extend the experience on the boat into schools. Designed to be conducted in any location like the playground or school hall, the activities consider the needs of our diverse clients and seek to create a fun, engaging and unique experience while still offering an element of challenge. A pilot program is being rolled out into select schools and will offer a means for Making Waves to continue program delivery even when we can't go sailing.

20.01.2022 #fridayfunny :-D Everyone at Making Waves wishes you a beautiful Friday!

19.01.2022 Check out our Wright of Passage trainees on their first sail training day! The group, who have been working on restoring our wooden yacht Mercator, jumped ship for this 8 week on water training program on Kayle! They were fast learners, quickly taking on new information and enthusiastic to learn more. Wright of Passage is a skills based training program for young people who are experiencing hardship or who have not found their place in traditional educational settings. ... 18.01.2022 #mondaymotivation Covid-19 has forced us to put our usual programs on hold and not allowed schools out to visit us, or us to go in and visit them with activities. Financially, it is a difficult time for all not-for-profits, with donations down, reductions in available grants, and major fundraisers canceled... But we understand what it is like to live each day with a disability or life challenge. Every day requires patience, resilience, and adaptability. It could be one of our... blind members navigating their way through buildings they cannot see, or maybe the dyslexic finding the item they need in a big store when they cannot read. Maybe it's one of our members with anxiety who's putting themself in a tough place just to get the food shopping done, or one of our wheelchair and mobility aid users stopped by sets of stairs, big hills, narrow isles or no parking. During this time of change we can either be like the person who is trapped in their situation with no way out, or we can be like the person who finds their worth, becomes more than their situation, and discovers ways to adapt. Last week we were THRILLED to restart our Wright of Passage program. It has taken a lot of work and extra funds to make it comply with Covid Safe regulations, but it NEEDED to happen. After the lockdown was lifted we were very saddened to find that 4 of the 5 youth trainees wouldn't be coming back to the program. Trying to keep in phone contact hadn't worked. Losing the thing that gave them routine, and a reason to get out of the house and work on a project with support and mentors sent young people in need back to the negative places they had started to leave behind them. It's been upsetting for everyone here and the parents/carers. It's also got us all fired up and motivated to not let the Covid-19 environment take any more young people from us. LifeLine and Kids Helpline are experiencing volumes of calls never before seen. Hospitals are reporting sharp increases in the number of hospital admissions due to self-harm. We have choices. We can sit around waiting for the environment to return to what we once operated programs in OR we can adapt to what we have now and continue working on new program ideas... You can help us raise the financial resources we need by purchasing a raffle ticket here https://www.rafflelink.com.au/makingwaves2020 Thank you

13.01.2022 "In our experience, the current discourse about suicide in our community often fails to recognize the lived experience of young people. Implicit assumptions are often made that the pathways to suicide for young people, including associated risk factors, are similar to those for adults" - Your Town (an Australian service provider and advocate for children and young people 'at risk') Numerous reports and articles provide lists of risks and protective factors that are linked to ...suicide, but understanding which factors are most important, how different factors are inter-related, and how they might be targeted with interventions is limited. Understanding of risk factors is useful for identifying particular groups at high risk but does not help identify individuals at risk. Despite years of research, we are still unable to predict either who will develop suicidal thoughts, or who will act on those thoughts You can read more of this discussion in the Your Town Discussion Pages on their website

13.01.2022 #Repost The Age Dylan Alcott ....... When some people [introduce me], they’ll say, He’s a differently abled person. I’m like, Just say the word ‘disabled’. I’m proud of my disability, I’m proud of who I am. When I go up to little kids with a disability, I say, What’s your name?, and then, What’s your disability? Their parent might go, She doesn’t have a disability even though she’s clearly in a wheelchair. That’s already telling her being disabled is a bad thing. We all need to say disabled because guess what? There’s absolutely nothing wrong with having a disability. It makes you different. And there’s nothing wrong with being different. https://www.theage.com.au//dylan-alcott-i-m-proud-of-my-di

08.01.2022 Breaking The Rolex Sydney Hobart is cancelled for 2020... I am so sorry to all who were planning to head south either as a sailor or supporter, or organiser.... --- A personal thanks to my team, and our supporters that were going to help us once again this year. Marine Sales Tasmania and the Royal Yacht Club of Tasmania are incredible with what they do to help us with the finish. Cronulla Sailing Club were on board to help us with the start once again. PFG Group for our finish craft, Musto Australasia, Bollé Australia and Harken for their sponsorship and continual belief in our work. ROLEX for their incredible support of the Great Race and yachting in general, and all at the CYCA who organise the race with the RYCT. Miss you all x Sydney crew; Pil, Nev, Annabelle thank you x Hobart crew; Steve you are a legend x Back end; Josh thank you champ x Core crew; Rob, Tiana, Andrew - love you so much and thank you for all you do. We will have a show on Boxing Day to mark what would have been - I would love to hear what your favourite moments are from our coverage - so stay tuned on that :) We will still bring you Hobart Cheer to mark one hell of a year xxx --- Cruising Yacht Club Of Australia - Media Release It is with great regret that the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia announces that the 76th Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race will not be proceeding in 2020. The impact of COVID-19 that has disrupted sporting events around the globe for so much of the year has added the Great Race to its list. CYCA Commodore, Noel Cornish AM said, We are bitterly disappointed to cancel the Race this year especially considering the plans and preparations we had put in place to have a COVID Safe race. We were so well prepared to run the race and we’re only six days from the start. This is the first time in 76 years that the race will not be conducted. The primary consideration for the Club continues to be the safety of competitors, Members and staff along with the health and welfare of the people of NSW and Tasmania. Following the announcement by the Tasmanian Premier, Peter Gutwein, this afternoon, it is now impracticable for the CYCA to conduct the Race under prevailing COVID-19 restrictions. Yesterday, the Northern Beaches local government area of Sydney had been classified a High Risk zone which would prevent any residents from travelling to Tasmania. This afternoon, Greater Sydney was defined as Medium Risk whereby people entering Tasmania from Sydney are required to quarantine for fourteen days on arrival. As this restriction would apply to all competitors, families, race management and staff, it is unrealistic to proceed further with planning for the Race. It is unlikely the restrictions and advice will lift in the immediate future. As such the immense logistics involved in reorganising and running a significant sporting event such as the Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race, as well as the planning and preparation required by crews, precludes the Club from postponing the race. Alternative races had been carefully considered by the Club. However, in line with the NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian’s request that all NSW residents limit their non-essential travel and interactions with others, it was felt that there were no other options that would allow for a COVID Safe replacement race. On behalf of the CYCA, I’d like to express my gratitude to our Competitors, Members, Volunteers, The Royal Yacht Club of Tasmania, New South Wales & Tasmanian Governments, and other stakeholders for the very close working relationships we’ve developed through the year to make the race a possibility. A special thank you to our partner Rolex for their support of the race and our Club. This race has a long and proud history and we look forward to continuing this exciting tradition next year.

08.01.2022 Andrew Halliday, Sydney's Crew Trainer, has resumed training sails for our volunteers. The primary focus for the remainder of 2020 will be working with our new on-water volunteers, taking them through a course of sail training with the aim of producing valuable new crew members ready to contribute to MWF programs. Partnered with learning to operate our vessels safely, the main goal of the training is to ensure that every volunteer contributes to creating an environment where ...everyone who participants in our programs feels included, valued and safe to be who they are. The training environment itself represents this culture with one of our new volunteers reflecting, "I have learned that it is useless to compare myself with others; as with everyone else, I too have something unique to give." Additionally, Andrew is working with some of our senior volunteers with the aim of bolstering the ranks of Second-in-Command and Skippers to ensure we have a balanced crew roster as we approach full program capacity. These opportunities for upskilling will be by invitation and run in conjunction with programs on Tuesday and Wednesdays.

06.01.2022 #REPOST from Tilda, a young Australian para equestrian athlete and passionate disability advocate ......... Loving my new mask It's definitely been difficult trying to understand people through a mask because I rely a lot on lip reading. It sorta got to the point where I was a bit over it. Definitely not a big problem in the scheme of what people have had to cope with, so don't want to be woe is me. Hopefully this mask will help people be a bit more aware and have a bit of patience or gesture when communicating to me

06.01.2022 Yesterday we had a group of volunteers getting creative on land! They have been working on developing activities that we could take to our schools when Covid restrictions allow. There were pulleys, fenders, lots of rope, life jackets and talk of walking the plank. It was great to see the group's ideas begin to take shape as they tested some activities on each other and Renee in her wheelchair.... 03.01.2022 WRIGHT OF PASSAGE UPDATE We are thrilled with the progress of the Wright of Passage program since it was able to resume in mid-September. Three youth trainees are settling into the program well and have begun working on Wright of Passage Mercator's restoration. Lifting of Covid restrictions for NSW Education means that two new youth from Lake Illawarra High will be allowed to join in the work effort and training at Woolwich Dock. None of this would be possible without the eff...orts of our core volunteers, as well as three new volunteers who have settled in to the program well. MWF thanks them for the passion, dedication and willingness to give their time and skills to this fantastic program. MWF Management has been in discussion with another organisation of similar values, around opportunities to collaborate and bring several more youth into our program. More information will be released once plans are finalised. See more
