25.01.2022 Onion harvest . I accidently put on the water systems on where onions are before harvesting them . So instead of harvesting them all, we picked only two to eat today. Kids picked ones that they had been keeping eyes on (the biggest ofcourse ).... . The new season's onions are so sweet and soft. The simple onion steak is kids favourite breakfast . The roots, skins and the top green leaves have so much nutrients that you don't want to throw away. I'll keep them in freezer and chuck them in the chicken broth next time . I took the water systems off from the onion field so hopefully harvesting all tomorrow morning . ***Magomadine compost is available in bulk (1t/$165) and 25L bags (available at cant Bros home Hardware store in coonamble $15). 24.01.2022 Happy new year . Hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas and New year . We had beautiful rain over last week and now we are stuck behind the creek ... . The garden is just so lovely after the rain and feeding us well I go out to the garden and come back with something everytime tonight I got the zucchinis, spring onion, garic chives, beetroot leaves and rainbow beets for dinner . Feeling heavy after the holiday food, we enjoyed healthy Japanese food . #selfsufficient #gardening #growyourfood #compost #kidseathealthy #sustainable @magomadine_farm See more

24.01.2022 Found this beauties today I wonder who's going to find it first . Pomegranate tree is flowering too I pruned this tree in winter and put the cuttings in pots. Leaves are coming back from some cuttings now I wonder if they'll grow into a tree .... Beetroot that were planted in an old gutter in a very shady place (very little or non direct sun) are growing well too I found that spinach family like silverbeet and beetroot can handle shade better than other vegetables which are pretty handy for this space . Hope everyone's gardens are giving joy as much as it does to me exciting season ahead now . ***Magomadine compost is available in bulk (1t/$165) and 25L (20kg) bag (available at cant Bros home Hardware store in coonamble $15). 24.01.2022 Today's progress in the garden. . The farmer says there is always something to do in farming and I can understand that now there is always something I want to finish in the garden and I say the same thing that my husband said to me to my little ones. Only thing is my little ones are not as understanding as I was (I'm sure) . Today's progress is my little wickgarden for pickling cucumber plants. ... . My seedlings are growing very well and now I have to map gardens for where I can put what. Pickling cucumbers got a nice spot . Old little esky is just a thing for wickgarden. Wicking garden saved me and Anne (my very keen gardener mother in law) from frustration of not being able to grow our own vegetables (because of the extreme heat and drought). . During the drought, we could still grow beautiful vegetables and got enough supply for family meals. . So this is how to make your very own wickgarden. You can be creative and use whatever container you can find . Happy gardening . ***Magomadine compost is available in bulk (1t/$165) and 10kg bag (available at cant Bros home Hardware store in coonamble $15). 23.01.2022 When I go to supermarket and see pot plants in the vegetables corners, I feel bad for that plants. . I wondered when was the last time that these plants got the sun and then I felt that they were as though saying "pick me pick me, take me with you" . Of cause I can't take them all so I picked 2 pretty strawberrie plants.... . Next day when I was watering all my seedlings including these strawberries, I realised the soil of the strawberry smelled funny. As Anne (my mother in law, expert of soil) always tells that I can know if the soil is healthy or not by smelling the soil, I thought I had to do something. . So I googled if I can wash the soil out of the strawberry roots to repot. I found a farmer who does that. So I did it. And repotted with compost and vermiculite. They look happy now and hopefully they happy . ***Magomadine compost is available in bulk (1t/$165) and 10kg bag (available at cant Bros home Hardware store in coonamble $15). 22.01.2022 Spring is so busy . It's been so nice and warm for planting vegetables and I couldn't wait for my seedlings to grow big enough to go in garden so I got ones from the shop. Heirloom tomato which means I can keep the seeds when (and if) it fruits . I was reading Japanese Tomato farmers study and this is what they suggested. Lying down tomato. The root is very shallowly buried. Plant will stand up as it will follow the sun. This way, they say, seedling will be shooting strong... roots and the plant will be very strong. This is my first attempt. Being never successful to grown big tomatoes before, if I can harvest tomatoes this season, I'll stick with this method . Photo 1 is yesterday and 2 is today. It's found the sun and now standing up . This is probably my earliest start planting tomatoes but I think it's best time! (I think one of the reasons why I failed is planting too late). . I've got tomato plants this way one in the pot, one in the wickgarden and one in the normal garden. Will see which one grows best and give me fruits . It's time to put summer veggies in Coonamble (warm zone) to be able to harvest in summer ( I think!). Don't get in too late! . ***Magomadine compost is available in bulk (1t/$165) and 10kg bag (available at cant Bros home Hardware store in coonamble $15). 17.01.2022 My green house turned into camomile flower garden . I remember my first post on Instagram was introducing my newbie camomile plant into my green house garden. The plant actually didn't do well there that I don't remember seeing many flowers and that plant itself must have died too but it obviously left some seeds behind . Camomile is called "plants' doctor" and help weak plant get better (apparently). I'll leave them there to help other plants grow well and next year's ...blossom maybe try some camomile tea tomorrow . 14.01.2022 Good afternoon . It's been really warm lately here in Coonamble. I didn't think there would be any frost risk now so I transferred my pumpkin seedlings that I grew from seeds I kept from last season's pumpkins . According to my facebook post from last year, I transferred seedlings at begging of November. So it's nearly 2 months earlier that last year! I started early this year aiming to have harvest in summer! Will see how they go! ... . When I transfer seedlings, I only dig a little bit to make the soil softer and mix compost. Put seedlings on top if it and cover the roots with compost. So where the plant is a little mountain. It looks like the plant is standing on the top of the little hill. I do this just because I think it's better this way It's just for drainage and the head start for the roots to grow (again, I think). And cover the roots zone with mulch (I use lawn clippings). . . Also my seedling tray was getting full. The bigger leaves were blocking the sunlight for little tomato and eggplant sprouts. So I transferred all of them into bigger tray. . I started doing this early in the morning before kids wake up. My oldest woke up and found me in the garden. She helped me but also put her names on some of the seedlings for her garden . Summer's coming get started your garden now I have more than a few friends who told me that they started their own gardens start small, and you'll be surprised what you can grow . ***Magomadine compost is available in bulk (1t/$165) and 10kg bag (available at cant Bros home Hardware store in coonamble $15(sold out at the moment!)). Asparagus plant keeps producing well 4th year for this plant and still going strong hope we can enjoy her next 6years or more . In my garden, no chemical fertiliser is used, just top up fresh well matured compost every so often I'm very happy that I can let my kids eat my veggies straight from the garden unwashed . ***Magomadine compost is available in bulk (1t/$165) and in 25L (20kg) bag (available at cant Bros home Hardware store in coonamble $15). 09.01.2022 There are so many reasons that I don't want to go to the garden in summer... . scared of snakes. pumpkins growing so powerfully (which is so nice to see) and hard to mow the lawn around them...I think I saw a snake in the long grass!!! . too too way too many mosquitoes... . hot . But I wanted to eat this smoked salmon and freshly picked raw onion salad. So I get braved and went to the garden and harvested those onions which were hidden away by the sweet potato vines. . 09.01.2022 Good evening . Forecast says it's going to warm later on this week! Time to sort seeds again . Some of the seeds I planted earlier on this winter survived and growing slowly but some died too so I put more in. ... . This time I mix coconut coir with perlite and compost for my seed raising hopefully It'll work better. . It's time to plant potatoes too I studied properly this time how to grow potatoes before I actually plant them. and learnt that I needed to let the sprouts to come out by exposing to the sun light first before I put them in the soil. So I put the seed potatoes out in the egg carton near the north facing window for 2-3weeks and let them sprout then put them in the soil today. hopefully I'll see their leaves out from the soil soon . The seeds I put in today are: *Tomato -San Marzano, Tigerella, Money maker, Sibrerian, cherry mix *Cucumber - lemon, Lebanese, national pickling, spacemaster, Japanese climbing. *eggplant- slim Jim, black beauty * Watermelon *Chinese broccoli *Pocket melon . 07.01.2022 Spring onions are turning to seed. . Just last couple of months I've got the same question from 3 different friends. . The question was: "if I plant the onion that sprouted in the cupboard in the soil would it grown onion". ... . This, I wondered same thing before, as garlic does grow more garlic if I plant the clove that sprouted in the cupboard. . But the answer is no. . Onion, spring onion, leeks and chives are all in same family with garlic but they don't grow like garlic does. . If you plant onion, it'll grown like spring onion and produce shoot to flower just like the photo and turn into little black seeds. . To grow onions, you pick the black seeds and plant them in autumn. They'll grow and you can harvest before summer . the very fresh onion is so sweet and soft. Oh well, as long as they are enjoyed by minis . This tree is its 3rd year here in my garden. And the first tree that survived in summer and fruits. . 01.01.2022 Seed collection . One thing that discourages me from gardening is a messy seed collection box. I can never find seeds I want in there . Finally I found easy and cheap way to store my seeds neatly and easy to find. ... . $0.95 envelopes! I grouped my seeds according to sowing seasons and plant's family. . Put different colours on top by the season (yellow is autumn sowing and green is spring sowing). . I've seen some people have beautiful seed collection box or drawers on pinterest but it was just bit too much effort for me. Plus all my seeds come in different sizes and different colour packets which were hard to store neatly. This way, it doesn't matter what colour or size of packets you have as long as it fits in an envelope . 3 good size boxes of seeds are now neatly stored in one boxyay! . .
