23.01.2022 The cashless debit card - Labor won’t support that. Why? Because we now know that the governments cashless debt card policy will just end up making it a whole l...ot more difficult for many Australians to purchase basic and essential items at more affordable prices. It is clear that the Government is absolutely determined to ram this through the Parliament but Labor will do what we can to stop this compulsory income management. We won’t let them force the cashless debit card on to Australian pensioners either - I know they’ve been quite concerned about this.

21.01.2022 The final sitting weeks of 2020 commence tomorrow. On the agenda will be the Bill to guarantee the seats of Lingiari and Solomon, and the Bill to introduce the Cashless Debit Card to the NT. Labor will not be supporting the Morrison government’s Cashless Debit Card legislation. Last week Independent Senator Rex Patrick travelled with me to North East Arnhem Land to hear from those who will be affected by this change. Sincere thanks to those who made the time to speak to Sena...tor Patrick including ALPA, Barayuwa Mununggurr from Laynhapuy Homelands, Rangers at Dhimurru Aboriginal Corporation and Independent member for Mulka Mark Yingiya Guyula. Barayuwa told Senator Patrick said about the introduction of the Basics Card during the NT intervention: They have just lit a fire and it’s burning across the land not knowing when it’s going to stop. We have been mistreated in many ways. Cashless card is one thing that I see as a racist act. Take it back.

21.01.2022 Josie Douglas gives evidence to the Aboriginal Flag Inquiry on behalf of the Central Land Council and Aboriginal Peak Organisations of the NT: "We would invite the committee to recommend that the Commonwealth government assumes control of the Aboriginal flag under a newly established entity. This could be designated as an Aboriginal flag commission or council, and may be a subsidiary organisation within a national Indigenous cultural authority." "I think you'll get the best o...utcome through a negotiated agreementrather than compulsory acquisition. You need to get parties at the table to negotiate this matter." Submissions to the Committee can be read here: https://www.aph.gov.au//Aborigi/AboriginalFlag/Submissions

16.01.2022 The Morrison Government is pushing ahead with legislation to make the Cashless Debit Card permanent and rolling it out across the Northern Territory, despite no evidence it works. The Government-chaired Senate Inquiry into the Bill has released its report, recommending the Bill be passed. Labor Senators have released a dissenting report, with Labor reiterating that it will oppose the Bill. The Government is ideologically obsessed with the Cashless Debit Card. Yet, it has so ...far failed to prove that it is effective. Frankly, I am disappointed, but not surprised, that the Minister for Social Services, Anne Ruston, has not even read the $2.5 million Adelaide University evaluation of the Cashless Debit Card Trial, as revealed in Budget Estimates, yet has introduced legislation to make it permanent. And true to form, the Government did not make the much-anticipated evaluation public in time for it to be considered by our Senate Inquiry. It is clear the Government is pursuing this policy regardless of the evidence. I am also concerned about the lack of consultation undertaken on the proposal of this Bill. This is part of a long history of inadequate community engagement and policy imposition on First Nations communities, including the discredited policies of the Intervention. 13 years after the NT Intervention and the introduction of the Basics Card, it is clear that compulsory income management is a failure and has left the people of the Northern Territory worse off.

13.01.2022 My sincerest condolences to the families and loved ones of Lorna Cubillo. A quiet but bravely determined woman who never gave up on her fight to right the terrible wrong inflicted on her and her people when she was taken from her family aged just eight, and placed in Darwin's Retta Dixon Home. Her courage and strength was and remains to this day an inspiration.

12.01.2022 2020 has been a tough year for everyone. It's particularly tough for people living in Melbourne and Victoria at the moment, and I am thinking of you all. Hang in there. Your sacrifices are making a difference. Are you OK? is a question we need to ask genuinely and sincerely any time we notice the signs someone may be struggling. But there’s more to say after R U OK? When someone says they’re not OK, make time to listen, encourage action and check in.... If you're unsure how to have that conversation, visit R U OK Day and https://www.ruok.org.au/ for some help.

12.01.2022 On 28 September JobKeeper will move into its second phase which will see over three million Australian workers either lose the payment or have their payments cut. In the middle of a jobs crisis and with the Government still expecting unemployment to increase, it makes no sense for Scott Morrison to be cutting support from the economy, particularly with no jobs plan to replace it.

10.01.2022 I was saddened beyond words to hear of this terrible, violent loss of a strong, inspirational leader. In the words of the Tangentyere Women, R Rubuntja is not just a number, another statistic in our country’s horrifying family and domestic violence toll. She will be remembered and her work will live on. But for now we will seek strength in each other and in her memory. Alice Springs Tangentyere-Women

08.01.2022 The Senate Select Committee on the Aboriginal Flag is about the the voices of First Nations people and organisations being heard. 07.01.2022 Congratulations to Vincent Namatjira from Iwantja Arts, winner of the Archibald Prize, and the first First Nations winner in its 99 year history. And Congratulations to Hubert Pareroultja from Ntaria community for his painting 'Tjoritja', a beautiful work that pays tribute to the West MacDonnal Ranges here in the NT. Terrific recognition of First Nations and NT Talent. Enormously proud.

06.01.2022 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander users are advised that the following post contains an image of a person who has died. "We grieve now and then we mobilise.... We will be inspired by our sister's legacy. We will not let her be forgotten and then we will ask you to stand with us against family and domestic violence." Our condolences are with the Tangentyere Women's Family Safety Group after the death of R.Rubuntja, who was killed last Thursday in Mparntwe (Alice Springs). Her partner has been charged with her murder. R.Rubuntja was a founding member of Tangentyere Women’s Family Safety Group and President of Anthepe Town Camp. She was a pioneer in her work to address the ongoing prevalence of violence against Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women, and leaves a profound legacy of early intervention and primary prevention. She forged a path to a future where women and their children live free from violence. It has been Our Watch’s honour and privilege over several years to work with the women of Tangentyere, to witness the strength of their community, and their innovation and commitment to their most vital work. We will continue to stand with you against family and domestic violence. In awe of your resilience, and so very sorry that it must again be called upon. Image provided by and shared with the permission of Tangentyere Women’s Family Safety Group and family.

05.01.2022 Thank you SBS News for reporting on this issue. We must keep fighting to retain the Northern Territory's two seats of the voice of remote Territorians will be diminished. We must ensure that First Nations people have a voice and are at the ballot boxes voting. There is still so much work to be done.

04.01.2022 Thank you Senator Rex Patrick for accepting my invitation to come to the Northern Territory to hear from Territorians about the cashless debit card. As an independent, Senator Patrick holds a crucial vote on the Morrison Government’s legislation to the make the cashless debit card trial sites permanent and impose the welfare card on 23,000 Australians. We’ve had compulsory income management for 13 years in the Northern Territory, imposed during the NT Intervention. We’ve als...o had a number of Senate inquiries and the overwhelming evidence from people in the Northern Territory is that they don’t want this card. I appreciate Senator Patrick’s open mind in coming to listen to Territorians. Decision makers need to listen to community, not impose policies that don’t work. Senator Rex Patrick

04.01.2022 "Like any flag, it has a certain sacred quality to all of those people who have given it meaning. It's that long history of Aboriginal use that has given it the meaning it has today. It is a uniting symbol for Aboriginal people. It's a symbol that gives Aboriginal people pride in their cultural identity. How do we preserve the great cultural symbolism of the flag and overcome the taint that the commercial use of it has resulted in but at the same time respect Harold Thomas's legal rights in it?" - Professor Marcia Langton AO The Senate Select Committee on the Aboriginal Flag heard from many passionate speakers and witnesses on a way forward for the Aboriginal Flag. We will release our report by 13 October.

04.01.2022 Cuts to JobKeeper are coming at the worst possible time for many workers, businesses and communities. From The NT News: 'Darwin publican Jason Hanna, who like more than 4800 Territory businesses is tapping into the JobKeeper program, is really concerned about the potential tidal wave of job losses that could come with the newest round of changes to the program. Mr Hanna, who originally had 17 staff on JobKeeper across seven venues, said he was concerned about the effect...s of reducing the relief measure. I am on the edge of my seat with my own businesses, he said.'

01.01.2022 It’s time the Australian parliament took seriously the passionate views of First Nations people, indeed all Australians, in relation to the Aboriginal flag. The Senate supports this inquiry because there needs to be an open and transparent process in defending the significance of the Aboriginal flag, and respecting the rights of its creator, Harold Thomas. There is so much confusion about what can and can’t be done about the flag.... This inquiry is a chance to hear from all parties, their concerns and to seek a respectful way forward that guides the Australian parliament.

01.01.2022 Thank you to the families for your permission to pay tribute to Mr Nelson Tjakamarra in the Senate. Mr Tjakamarra was one of the leading talents in the second generation of Western Desert artists and one of the first Australian Indigenous artists to gain recognition in contemporary international art circles. How lucky we are to have the 196-square-metre mosaic of his Kangaroo and Emu Dreaming adorning the Parliament House forecourt here in Canberra.

01.01.2022 The cashless debit card has had no substantive impact on crime, gambling and drug and alcohol abuse in one of the trial sites the government wants to make permanent, according to a new study. Meanwhile, we continue to await the publication of a second Government-commissioned evaluation, this time by the University of Adelaide.

01.01.2022 Anecdotal evidence, which is rife in the Liberal-only Senate report, is not nearly enough. Correlation doesn’t mean causation. The NT News gets it. Why can’t the Morrrison Government? Release the evaluation.
