09.01.2022 The Anglican Parish of Maldon and Newstead Holy Trinity Maldon & All Saints Newstead 23rd December: FOURTH SUNDAY OF ADVENT ... 9.30am Maldon Eucharist Rev’d Des Benfield Today’s Hymns: 272, 497, 312 A Christmas Snippit Silent night, holy night! All is calm, all is bright Round yon virgin mother and child. Holy infant so tender and mild, Sleep in heavenly peace, Sleep in heavenly peace. In 1816, a young Catholic Priest, Josef Mohr, wrote the words of the carol, Silent Night, as he sat in the mountains above his home village of Mariapfarr in Austria gazing down at the peaceful snowy scene below. Two years later Josef Mohr asked his friend, Franz Gruber, a school master and organist, to write the music and accompanying guitar chords. In 1818, at midnight mass in Oberndorf, near Salzburg, Austria, Silent Night was sung for the first time. This year celebrates 200 years since the composing, and first singing, of this much loved carol. Parish Christmas Get-together The Christmas get-together at Judy and Jenny’s place on Friday night was a lovely time, lots of chatting and getting to know each other better, Christmas themed word games and a quiz, all tucked in between enjoying food, wine and coffee.
