25.01.2022 Everybody knows about Maldon,s V.G.R. and rightly so. However for many years a little known branch line exited out the back of Maldon Station and veered North towards the Nuggety ranges terminating at a little known station called "Shellbourne", while passing through an even more obscure station called "Pollard". I think it closed in the 60s with a bushfire in the 70s destroying infrastructure and finally the rails being gobbled up for the V.G.R. But.... if you follow the track from Maldon Station you can re-discover this forgotten piece of Victorian rail history. Not to mention exiting old trestles and crossings. Even an old water race

25.01.2022 Just before Castlemaines "Skew Bridge", is this poor neglected house. A farmhouse in its day but now on the edge of town, and surplus to requirements its unwanted and unloved. Originally lined with timber lining boards. In the 50s or 60s somebody lined a couple of rooms in fibrous plaster. Oi vey! all that internal timber it would of been like living in a packing crate. Have a look at the old "wash house" as well see the brick wood fired copper base and the concrete wash trough. Also the 2 front rooms under the hip roof, then the next 4 rooms under a skillion, one more addition and you would need to get on your hands and knees to exit the back door. I woll put the 10 best pics on insta along with a video

25.01.2022 Morning everybody I'm afraid this years June Swap at Maldon, WILL NOT go ahead. Hopefully November's swap will, but even that is uncertain. I think the Government both Federal and States are doing a pretty good job so far, and have avoided the tragedies we have witnessed, in other countries. Please all stay safe be kind to each other, and with a bit of luck we can all catch up in November.

24.01.2022 Looming out of the verdant green forests of Yapeen Central Victoria is this water wheel. This totally puts the Garfield wheel at Chewton in the shade. How did I find this place? Taking somebody to their house, of course and you should see the views from his back deck. I am absolutely coming back here.

23.01.2022 By Adam's stuff...... so little Elliot can have liver treats

23.01.2022 As promised our "Journey to the centre of the Earth". With apologies to both Jules Verne and Rick Wakeman. We entered at the post office and emerged in Sicily near the terrifying Mt Etna. Wellll behind the Maldon Hotel actually. Over 700 metres of walkable underground drain. I thought the last exit photos looked very Indiana Jones.

22.01.2022 Drove these in service in the tramways out of Footscray depot. I thought they were heaps of shit then, and think even less of them now. 522 has seen better days, parked at Happy Jacks in Lockwood. He seems to turn things over. You see weird and wonderful vehicles coming and going.

21.01.2022 I drive around the area a lot (Taxi driver NOT pervert) and I have a very curios mind. (OK... little bit pervert). I have seen this style balcony/verandah combination in 3 places Campbells Ck. Castlemaine and good old Maldon. A narrow balcony placed above a full width verandah. Questions Quircky design? Practical solution to a local issue? Post construction whim? ... Any ideas? I have not seen this anywhere else, A lot like our bracketed verandahs from a previous post. Does this style have a name or a history? I might just throw that one over to @bradhooperarchitect see if he has any clues. For my part I have serious misgivings, A place for embers lodge during fires, and a place for dust, leaves, twigs and damp to accumulate and starting rot and decay. @ Central Highlands (Victoria)

21.01.2022 Remember this post from a couple of weeks back? Of the single room building in Chewton? Well, we got some pictures sent to us by Wendy McLean this place has a strong connection to her family. Many, many thanks Wendy. This building was obviously far more substantial than now, still I wouldn't want raise 4 or 5 kids in it. @ Chewton, Victoria, Australia

20.01.2022 Maldon has heaps of informal lane ways, also abandoned roads, even the odd seasonal water course or two. While a lot of the fronts of houses have been tarted up lots of times the rear tells you more about a buildings history. So seeing as I won't be posting pics of events and that I'm doing a power of walking (as opposed to power walking) lately I am going to annoy you with all the quirky stuff I stumble across. @ Maldon, Victoria

20.01.2022 The good thing about Maldon is that even when you cant go exploring because of COVID, history is literally on your door step, back door step in this case. photos with the circles and arrows (Apologies to Arlo Guthrie ) show what was on the site of our shop as far back as 1865, on right side of photo. The left hand circle shows a type of structure, up the hill. The other old photos show what occupied the now "Parks Victoria" land up until about 1968. The photo with the 3 men... out the front is of the old Well's Bakery. So armed with a pair of loppers a puffed my way up the hill to reveal the past. This is a work in progress and i would very much like to keep this theme or thread going if you're happy to see it. I found several drystone walls that created a type of terrace effect I don't know if they served a purpose. I found an old collapsed fence line (much more recent) The funny thing is this land has no association what so ever with mining Its heritage value was always commerce, housing and agriculture. 19.01.2022 "Plain as a pyke staff" Wracking my brains how do I make this house interesting? It has one adornment, an awning. OK Blythe you can do this, remember "bullshit baffles brains" This house does not so much sit on a site as clings to one. Like a tree growing out of a rock. (good start mate keep going) This house is occupied. I believe it goes right to the property line which makes the awning kind of illegal. I don't really like the house but I have to concede I respect it and ...the people who call still it home. I will try harder next post, I promise. @ Chewton, Victoria, Australia See more

18.01.2022 Walking back from watching a petanque game at St. Bridgites, I decided to follow a trail behind the hospital and very glad I did I must say. I strongly suspect this belongs to the hospital. If not, some "clever clogs" will let me know. Just imagine if the tree had fallen the other way Have look at how much ROCK came up in that tree.

17.01.2022 If I am to be brutally honest. I cant see the point of doing up a ruin, I really can't. But what absolutely fascinates me is looking at, or walking around an old house and trying to imagine what was there when it was first built. On that note take a look at this place. It looks for all the world like a small farm holding nestled into the banks of Forest Ck. In the centre of Castlemaine. It is a glimpse into the past and pretty as a picture. The word oasis comes to mind. @ Castlemaine, Victoria

15.01.2022 Good old fashioned functional and structural brickwork, brought to you by the Public Works Department of Victoria. This drain is not only self supporting it bloody great trains thundering across it. This drain is just near Skew Bridge (local name). And takes run off from a creek in Dudley St. The bottom surface seems to be Bluestone and it seems to show tool marks. The low wall is English Bond, THE load bond and capped with a long arch ungauged but bonded, many layers thick I would say. An outstanding example of people taking pride in their work even though anybody is likely to see it. #englishbond #brickdrains #stormwatermanagement #skewbridge #maldoncastlemainesurrounds #maldon3463 #centralvictoria #heritagebuildings #architecturalrevival #barkerscreek3451 @ Castlemaine, Victoria

12.01.2022 This didn't load on either facebook or insta. I love the brick, wood fired copper in the wash house.

11.01.2022 What has happened here is this the last room left of a much larger building? Was it a shop, a Government office? It is opposite the Chewton Post office after all. It looks like it has a fireplace on the West wall. In anticapation of being extended? Like parliament house. The rendering suggests a small room with a fireplace. chewton @ Chewton, Victoria, Australia

08.01.2022 Very Very sad to have to post this. But better safe than sorry. Sometimes the question is not CAN you hold an event. It is SHOULD you hold an event, We decided no. ... Bonnie and I would never forgive ourselves if we helped bring this virus to our town OR Our Stallholders and Attendees. Take care all, stay safe and we will be back bigger (in more ways than one) and better next year. Cheers Mark See more

07.01.2022 OK......I thought I would wait a few weeks and all this would all blow over. A wee bit Trumpian of me. I have always thought the Macarthur's building to have a unique verandah awning in that it was supported by iron brackets. But no its not, here are another 2 examples, both in Castlemaine is it a local quirk? Is it an established method? Were they all built by the same person? @bradhooperarchitect msy throw some light on all this his practice is next door to Macarthurs P...S. No idea when we will be holding events again, The November Swap is just a 50/50 prospect @ Central Highlands, Victoria See more

06.01.2022 This obscure location in Chewton is known locally as Tunnel Hill. For obvious reasons, I really think the battlements over the rail bridge are a tasteful flourish. I also like the brick storm water drain, I wouldn't mind following this further and also getting to stand in one of those battlements would be a great shot Along the tracks.

02.01.2022 This had to be loaded separately. Pity

01.01.2022 Another plea for help, at the 2019 June Swap. Mick Saw them didn't buy them and now regrets it. Mick is after a super charger for a project he's building.
