Warm and practical clothing from legendary names such as RM Williams and Thomas Cook as well as merino wool socks or possum knitwear, to name a few. Beaton’s will be open this week Friday 11-1, Saturday 10-2 and other times by appointment. They are also thinking of their Melbourne friends and can’t wait to see them again soon.

21.01.2022 ANNOUNCEMENT Mt Tarrengower Hill Climb 2020 Update 28/07/2020 To all officials, competitors, sponsors, suppliers, spectators and other interested parties. As y...ou are all aware that we are experiencing some very challenging times at the moment with most other events being cancelled. It is with the safety concerns of everyone involved in the Mt Tarrengower Hill Climb that through the committee and other interested parties we have decided to cancel this year’s event. It would be near impossible to maintain social distancing with the competitors, officials and the spectators following the regulations that need to be adhered to ensuring a safe environment for all. Thank you everyone for your support and understanding to this decision being made. It is very important to keep this event going into the future, considering it being a significant standalone event and a large contributor to the local economy. Please note, all being well pencil in your diaries October 16th & 17th 2021 for the 92nd year of the event. We look forward to seeing you all there. Stay safe and well. 15.01.2022 Greetings to you all, I hope you are well. I feel for those of you who are now again under stay home restrictions. Hopefully it won’t last past the next six wee...ks. Unfortunately, the decision has been made to cancel the Maldon Folk Festival for 2020. With the increased number of active COVID 19 cases in Victoria, high community transmission, Melbourne back in lock down and all the state borders closed to Victorians, the situation is unlikely to improve in time to put the festival together, make it financially viable and COVID safe. The most important consideration in this decision was the safety and health of our performers, volunteers, billeters, contractors and the local Maldon residents. All performer applications submitted for this year will be carried over to 2021 and new applications will be welcome 1st Feb 31st Mar 2021.

14.01.2022 Congratulations to Brian Rhule for winning the 2020 Victorian Community History Award (History Publication Award category) for his book, Maldon: a new history 1...853-1928. The award recognises excellence and originality in historical storytelling. Brian spent 23 years conducting research for his book. He is a member of the Maldon Museum and Archives Association and worked closely with research volunteers during that time. This award was presented by the Public Record Office Victoria and the Royal Historical Society of Victoria and the winners were announced at an online ceremony on Wednesday, October 28th. Judges said that Brian’s book made a valuable contribution to the ever-expanding body of work on the Victorian goldfields. Skilfully contextualised, it provides insight into the rich fabric of social life, the political sphere and labour issues. The township has proud traditions relating to its goldmining past and classification by the National Trust as Australia’s first notable town. Brian reflects perceptively on this legacy when considering the future of heritage in Maldon. Maldon: a new history 1853-1928 is a history of key social, economic and cultural developments in the former gold mining town and its community during the period 1853 to 1928. It examines the discovery of the goldfield, the formation of a township and settled community at Maldon, the emergence of early gold mining companies, the emergence of social organisations, and the politics of ‘labour and capital’ during the period. It further examines efforts made by leaders within the small mining community during the first decades of the twentieth century to develop alternative industries, in response to the decline of the town’s quartz gold mining industry. Maldon: a new history 1853 to 1928, is available for purchase from the Maldon Museum (contact the secretary at [email protected]), the Maldon Newsagents and the Book Wolf, Maldon. 12.01.2022 Everybody knows about Maldon,s V.G.R. and rightly so. However for many years a little known branch line exited out the back of Maldon Station and veered North towards the Nuggety ranges terminating at a little known station called "Shellbourne", while passing through an even more obscure station called "Pollard". I think it closed in the 60s with a bushfire in the 70s destroying infrastructure and finally the rails being gobbled up for the V.G.R. But.... if you follow the track from Maldon Station you can re-discover this forgotten piece of Victorian rail history. Not to mention exiting old trestles and crossings. Even an old water race
