11.01.2022 NEW WALKING TRAIL PAVES WAY FOR ENVIRONMENTAL DISCOVERY Picture: Cr Winston Johnston, former Cr Jenny McKay & retiring Unitywater chairman Jim Soorley launch t...he trail. Nature lovers can explore more of the Sunshine Coast hinterland, with new trails opening at the Maleny Community Precinct wetland, accessible off Porters Lane. With more than two kilometres of trails, the network offers an easy walk through the wetlands with the chance to spot dozens of native bird species, frogs and other water-loving wildlife. The Maleny Community Precinct is a 126 hectare lot of former agricultural land near Porters Lane. It is divided into a range of land uses including environmental education, sport and recreation, community facilities, ecological parkland, environmental protection areas and housing. It is also home to the Maleny Golf Club and the aquatic centre. Division 5 Councillor Winston Johnston acknowledged the efforts of former local councillor Jenny McKay and retiring Unitywater chairman Jim Soorley in bringing the trails to fruition. Jenny McKay and Jim Soorley were instrumental in sourcing funding and support for the trail network, Cr Johnston said. The Unitywater wetlands were established in the precinct in 2014 as a natural way to filter out nutrients, pollutants and sediments from treated water passing through. Council and Unitywater have worked closely to construct the trail network and install signs, which opens up even more of this special precinct to our community. Unitywater Chairman Jim Soorley said a $17 million upgrade to the Maleny Sewage Treatment Plant was undertaken in 2014. As part of the works, we established the wetland and planted an irrigated forest which form part of the sewage treatment process the wetlands take up treated effluent discharged from the STP and remove nutrients and sediments, he said. It’s a wonderful way we can use nature to help us do our job. The added benefit of this process is that we can provide a beautiful recreational area for locals and visitors to enjoy. Our contribution to this precinct is just one of the ways Unitywater gives back to our communities and through our commitment to innovation, we’ll continue to deliver sustainable solutions to complement our traditional water and sewerage services. Visit adventure.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au for trail details Councillor Winston Johnston - Division 5 Sunshine Coast Council Unitywater #maleny

08.01.2022 REMINDER: NEW YEAR'S EVE PUBLIC EVENTS CANCELLED It’s not the end to 2020 we had hoped for, but unfortunately due to COVID-19 restrictions, particularly socia...l distancing and contact tracing requirements, no public Sunshine Coast New Year’s Events have been approved by Queensland Health. The traditional NYE Mooloolaba event, and the community events in Coolum and Caloundra, have been cancelled and there will be no fireworks. SO LONG, 2020! Despite the public events being cancelled, we can still ring in 2021 at one of the Coast's many restaurants and venues across the region or celebrate at home with family and friends. To ensure community safety, Queensland Police Service will have extra resources out across the region, particularly in Mooloolaba, Coolum and Caloundra, and as always, on the roads. If you are not attending a restaurant, venue or other private event, stay home this NYE. Stay safe and be kind this New Year’s Eve

05.01.2022 Maleny State School need our help ... Each year the Maleny State School P&C raises funds to support students at our school by providing additional support in the form of funds for additional teacher aides, school resources (technology, library, Chaplain resources, sports and musical equipment, garden club, poultry club and playgrounds), school camps and student welfare. This year as a result of Covid 19 restrictions our P&C has been unable to hold our annually held events tha...t serve as our major school fundraisers. MSS are looking forward to hosting a school Colour Fun Run in Term Four Term. Students are currently collecting sponsors for this event now and are encouraged to have their parents assist them to collect sponsorship from known family and friends and on line. Some of our families that are struggling financially are often unable to collect sponsorship and miss out on the opportunity afforded to most other students. The company that organises the Fun Run has an incentive based system that allows students to be rewarded with prizes varying in value in relation to the amount the student raises with the minimum being $10. At their recent P&C meeting a parent wondered whether we could make this event more inclusive for all students by asking business through the Chamber of Commerce if they would be interested in sponsoring a child that would normally miss out on this opportunity. This may be in the form of a cash donation from as little as $10 to the school who would allocate this amount to a child. Final collection of sponsors for students is the 18 September. School Principal John Byrne is happy to be contacted in person on 54998333 if you seek further clarification or to let the school know your business would like to participate.

01.01.2022 COPYRIGHT LAW DAY Let’s face it: copyright law doesn’t seem to be the most exciting thing to talk about. But it is much more necessary than some of us may realize: without it, we’d end up fighting and squabbling over who owns what, what constitutes fair usage, and spend all our time trying to defend our ideas and intellectual property. There are people who worked really hard to create all of the things we enjoy in life, from the music we listen to, the books and magazines we ...read, to everything we watch on TV, to the computer programs our computers would be useless without, and it is our responsibility to give credit where credit is due. Copyright law is something we probably take for granted a lot of the time, or even pay no attention to at all, so Copyright Law Day is a good time to take a moment to consider what the world would be like if the law didn’t protect our rights to your ideas and things you produce. How to Celebrate Copyright Law Day The best way to celebrate Copyright Law Day is to think of a way to show your gratitude to the creators of some computer program or work of literature, music or art that you particularly enjoy. You can do this easily by firmly resolving to always pay for anything and everything they created that you want this means no downloading pirated versions of anything and paying for each product, be it a film, a CD, or any kind of software, etc. fair and square. Show the creators of all of the things you enjoy some respect, and encourage your friends and family to do the same! Many people may not want to see it this way, but at the end of the day, copyright infringement is nothing more than robbing creative people of the reward they deserve for their ideas.
