19.01.2022 Both melancholic and heart-warming, this award-winning film MFS screened in 2018, deals with the unlikely friendship that develops between a Finnish businessman and a Syrian asylum seeker. After leaving both his wife and his job, travelling salesman Wikstrom gambles his savings in a poker game, wins big, and invests in an unprofitable restaurant. He then has a chance encounter with Kaled, a Syrian refugee staying illegally after failing to gain asylum. Wikstrom offers Kaled a... job in his restaurant and helps him find and rescue his sister who had become separated from him during their escape from Syria. Delivering a message of hope in the face of tragedy, the film illustrates the need for understanding and generosity in dealing with the difficult challenges faced by refugees in desperate situations. 14.01.2022 Another wonderful Australian Movie. MFS featured this film during the 2017 Celebration of Books in Maleny. The year is 1965, the place a Western Australian country town simmering with racial tensions. An Aboriginal boy discovers the body of a murder victim. Fearing he will be blamed, he seeks the help of the bookish fourteen-year-old Jasper Jones, who bravely sets out to try and solve the crime. Based on the well-loved award-winning novel by Craig Silvey, who helped adapt it for the screen, the film is directed by Rachel Perkins (Bran Nue Day) and the fine cast includes Toni Collette and Hugo Weaving. https://www.sbs.com.au/ondemand//1360255043938/jasper-jones

13.01.2022 For those who have some time on their hands now is the time to catch up on Icelandic eco-thrillers such as ’Woman at War’. This movie was one of MFS’s screening highlights in 2019. "This quirky film, full of surprises is co-written and directed by Benedikt Erlingssen, who illustrates the action with the music of an ever-present folk choir. Feisty forty-year-old female Halla, environmental activist, in passionate environmental frustration, shoots arrows from her bow to brin...g down power towers and sabotage the aluminum industry which is destroying her pristine Arctic homeland of geyser steam and icy peaks. The community dilemma regarding a crusading lawbreaker is paralleled by Halla’spersonal story: her desperate desire to adopt a Ukrainian orphan. This is a heart-warming drama with a happy and surprising comedic side. (In a range of languages including English, with English subtitles.") 07.01.2022 Don't start watching this until you have a box of tissues by your side! OMG I am not sure if MFS screened this one (2006), however, I can highly recommend this for those who ever had an imaginary friend - or ever wanted one - or for those who just love solid, well-made movies with a great storyline and beautiful cinematography! What a Wrap to live up to! Judge for yourself! https://www.sbs.com.au/ondema/video/838201411573/opal-dream

A real team effort, a real example of community working together to keep the magic of cinema alive in Maleny.

04.01.2022 Dear members and MFS advocates, I thought I would occasionally post a movie that we have screened in the past, that is on SBS currently, for free that you can watch in these times of isolation. I highly recommend the following movie for those who have access to SBS on demand...'After running away from his negligent parents, and committing a violent crime, a 12-year-old boy sues his parents for giving him life'. Don't miss this movie...the end is worth it. Stay safe, cheers Paula. https://www.sbs.com.au/ondema/video/1691234371716/capernaum

03.01.2022 If you did not see 'Hunt for the Wilderpeople' you MUST see it now, screening for FREE - SBS on demand. See it especially if you liked the Academy Award winning film 'JoJo Rabbit', directed by the same filmmaker, Taika Waititi. ‘Hunt for the Wilderpeople’ is just as laughable (and just as poignant) the second time around - I can vouch for that! Great for the whole family (warning some swearing involved) cheers Paula. Synopses is: Ricky is a roly-poly, hip-hop, juvenile del...inquent who writes haunting haiku. Uncle Hec, played by Sam Neil, is his cantankerous foster uncle who never learned to read or write. When this odd- ball pair end up on the run through the remote and gorgeous countryside of New Zealand there is opportunity for the director, Taika Waititi, to bring in plenty of action and comedy. Yet this film gives more than clashing and bonding between adult and youth. It celebrates individualism, as the protagonists run from a bureaucratic world wanting to turn them into form-filling humans. https://www.sbs.com.au//11394023/hunt-for-the-wilderpeople
