21.01.2022 UPDATE ON SEIZED BORDER COLLIES: Today we’d like to share some photos of the six adult border collies, seized from an intensive breeding facility last year, whi...ch remain in our care. We continue to be concerned about certain individuals and organisations who insist on using social media to spread misinformation about these dogs and would like to firmly refute incorrect claims that these six dogs have been or are planned to be euthanased. This is simply untrue. Our skilled behaviour team are continuing a specialist and individualised rehabilitation program for each of these six dogs. They each receive daily exercise, plenty of enrichment toys and games, extended play time outside in the sunshine, behavioural modification training and one-on-one time with qualified carers. We’re very happy to see these dogs are showing signs of progress although at varying rates, which is to be expected. In line with our rehabilitation procedure, the dogs that are now ready will shortly be moved into foster care with properly experienced and skilled foster carers, either from RSPCA’s foster care program or reputable rescue groups with whom we work. While we have received many offers of help from dog lovers, these dogs do continue to have behavioural issues that require specialist care and a structured rehabilitation program from highly experienced foster carers. To further address some of the misinformation and untruths being spread online: These six dogs are not on death row, as one media organisation reported. There were never a further 37 dogs earmarked for euthanasia left at the property following last year’s seizure of the 10 adult dogs and 5 puppies. The vet employed by the defendants who claimed all 10 seized dogs were all suitable to be rehomed is a generalist vet. RSPCA South Australia contracted two independent external vets (who wrote a total of three reports) with specialist dog behaviour qualifications, who are recognised leaders in their field, to assess the dogs. Contrary to claims being made on social media, RSPCA does not have to euthanase the dogs to prove our prosecution case against the defendants. The subsequent recovery or otherwise of any of the 10 dogs has no bearing on the court case, which is based on harm and suffering evident at the time of seizure. RSPCA South Australia rehomes over 700 dogs every year. As with all dogs that come into our care, our normal process is to work through an individual rehabilitation plan for each animal. It has always been RSPCA’s plan to continue to work with these six adult dogs to see what degree of rehabilitation is possible with each individual dog. It’s also important to remember that our prosecution case against the two defendants, Colin Ross and Kerrie Fitzpatrick, continues which means we continue to be legally restricted about how much information we can release. Ross and Fitzpatrick are charged with 17 offences under South Australia’s Animal Welfare Act and Animal Welfare Regulations. We remain committed to prosecuting these defendants, who allegedly subjected these animals to the neglect and cruelty that caused their severe mental damage. The case is due back in court next month.
