25.01.2022 An early start to Xmas celebrations with the crew from Malibu Podiatry heading to the Swan Valley last Saturday for a day of port, wine, food, chocolate, coffee and rum. Thanks to Stephen Retzlaff for driving us around and getting some tired soles home safely.
24.01.2022 Shoes purchased on sale may not always be a smart buy!!! Studies have shown that more than 40% of women have purchased shoes that were on sale even though they were either too tight, too small or too big because they felt they looked good. Given that women walk on average more than 3kms further every day than their male counter-parts it is more important that women should wear comfortable correctly fitting footwear.

23.01.2022 Fascinating Foot Facts: #13 Cold feet No, I don’t mean leaving the groom at the altar, we’re talking about early foot coverings.... Archaeological and paleoanthropological evidence for the earliest use of protective coverings for the human foot appears to commence during the middle Paleolithic period approximately 40,000 years ago and were made from animal skins. The animal skin was first wrapped around the foot and then secured by tying it on. This offered both warmth and protection to the wearers’ feet. The oldest complete foot covering (see picture), excluding sandal type footwear, dates back some 5,500 years and was discovered in a cave in Armenia on the Iranian and Turkish borders. The oldest known footwear in the world are estimated to be over 7,500 year-old sandals made from plant material found in a cave in the Arnold Research Cave in Missouri.
23.01.2022 All the staff at Malibu Podiatry would like to congratulate associate podiatrist Joshua McKernan on his recent marriage to his beautiful wife Katie McKernan, nee Parker. We wish you both many years of joy and happiness and some little bundles of 'red' haired mini-macs in the not too distant future.
23.01.2022 Fascinating Foot Facts: #14 The Price to Pay for Fashion Women suffer from four times as many foot problems than men.... This is believed to be a result of their choice of footwear, which usually consists of shoes with narrow toes and high heels. A two and a half inch heel can increase the load on the balls of the feet by 75% and studies have shown that more than 40% of women have purchased ill-fitting shoes that were on sale because they felt they looked good. Given that women walk on average more than 3kms further every day than their male counter-parts it is more important that women should wear comfortable correctly fitting footwear.

22.01.2022 The Socks For Schools Program, an initiative commenced a number of years ago by Malibu Podiatry, aimed to collect socks that were being used once in the capturing of 3-dimensional foot scans, and then subsequently discarded, and provide them to people less fortunate than many of us who were able to benefit from a perfectly good product that was been sent to land fill. Since its inception socks have been collected by podiatrists around Australia and sent to Malibu Podiatry ...where they are subsequently packed and distributed to children in rural schools and settings in Tanzania. The most recently distributed socks were sent to an orphanage in Mahenge, in the Ulanga district, one of the six districts of the Morogoro region of Tanzania. There are 96 children at the orphanage, 4 of whom living with a disability. The children were extremely grateful for the delivery as the cold weather is setting in. Below are a couple of photos of the children at the orphanage receiving their socks.

18.01.2022 Shoes For The Homeless: Winter Is Coming - Malibu Podiatry would be grateful for any donations of footwear that may be passed on to the homeless within our community this winter. Decent footwear that has rarely been worn would be greatly appreciated and we will ensure that they find there way to some needy toes. 18.01.2022 Fascinating Foot Facts: #16 Bigfoot In October 2011 The Guinness Book of World Records confirmed that Brahim Takioullah from Morocco holds claim to having the world's largest feet on a living person.... The 29-year-old, who currently lives in Paris, France, has a left foot measuring 38.1cm in length, while his right foot measures 37.49cm. Despite the incredible size of Brahim’s feet, they remain some way short of the largest feet ever recorded, which belonged to Robert Wadlow (USA, 1918 1940). Roberts feet measured an incredible 43.18cm over 5cm longer than Brahim’s.
17.01.2022 Shoes for the homeless update: Winter has definitely arrived over the last couple of weeks with an average daily temperature of 11c - overnight temperatures dropping to as low as 3c, and Malibu Podiatry would like to thank everyone who has dropped in shoes and blankets for our homeless appeal. To date nearly 300 pairs of shoes have been brought in to the practice and nearly half as many blankets. But winter has only just started and there are many feet outside of the Rocking...ham and Kwinana region who need good shoes so donations would still be very much appreciated. A special thank you to Malibu Podiatry associate podiatrist Susan Ackerley for all of her work over the past couple of months making sure that your donations make it to those people who need it most.

16.01.2022 One Small Step for China's "Last Bound Women" Click on the image below to view images and read about the history of foot binding, a practice that originated during the early 10th century and was seen as a sign of beauty, practiced by all social classes. Foot binding was a tradition in which the toes were tightly wrapped in cloth breaking the bones and curling the foot under. After a number of years performing this ritual from about the age of 5 onwards, the front and back of ...the foot would be forced together to give the impression of small dainty feet. Prospective mothers in law would inspect a girl's feet to see whether she was suitable for marriage to her son.
16.01.2022 Noted this post and pictures on a FB page today and thought it prudent to raise to parents/carers of young children regarding the potential dangers associated with booties/foot coverings in young children. The post read as outlined below: I think this is appropriate to share with other parents of young ones. Always check footies, booties, and baby socks. I had adorable bear booties on her for almost 6 hours before taking them off and discovering a string/thread had managed to wrap (with the help of little wiggling toes) around her toe, cutting circulation off. If it wasn't for her "hurt" cries while I was rubbing her foot I would of never bothered to check until I dressed her for bed late in the evening. Please, always turn those booties, socks and onsies inside out to check for loose strings.....I know i will from this point forward.

13.01.2022 Fascinating Foot Facts: #15 Gee my feet are sore! During an average day of walking, the total forces on your feet can total hundreds of tons, equivalent to an average of a fully loaded cement truck.... Standing in one spot can be far more tiring than walking. Although your feet may not experience the equivalent weight bearing load, the demands of standing are being made on the same few muscles for a longer length of time.
13.01.2022 Sometimes in life events occur to others that may make you wonder What can I do? In early February 2015 such an event occurred to a member of our local community. David Richards, a husband and father of a family that attends Malibu Podiatry was seriously injured in an explosion at the Morley Galleria shopping centre. Davids life was saved by the actions of many on that day, but without the care and dedication of Dr Fiona Wood and her team David may not have survived. Wit...h this in mind principal podiatrist Mark Ould has registered to participate in the Central Park Plunge, abseiling 52 floors, some 220m, off of the Central Park Building to raise money for the Fiona Wood Foundation, funds that will go to helping other burn victims and their families. The more people that know about the Fiona Wood Foundation, the greater their impact, so please help spread the word by sharing this page with your friends and family. Although the aim of this post is to raise awareness of the Fiona Wood Foundation if you feel compelled to make a donation to the foundation please click the link below;

09.01.2022 Malibu Podiatry is now a local stockist for ROCKTAPE. Unlike traditional athletic tapes that bind and don't stretch, ROCKTAPE is engineered to mimic the human skin. This stretchiness is the secret behind ROCKTAPE as it is able to stretch up to 190% of its original length but has amazing ‘snap-back’ or recovery. This is what gives ROCKTAPE its performance advantage over other tapes. ROCKTAPE has introduced a special weave into the cotton when the tape is woven allowing the tap...e to stretch in only one direction and the tension of the weave is engineered to mimic the same elasticity as skin. Together, these properties create what we call a Bio-Mechanical Lifting Mechanism. This simply means that the tape can lift the skin away from the soft tissue underneath the skin and it is this lifting capability that promotes blood flow and lymphatic drainage. ROCKTAPE can also be used to stabilise muscles and joints that have been sprained or strained. Unlike braces and sleeves that constrain and reduce blood flow, ROCKTAPE can provide support and stability while increasing blood flow. Thus, the tape’s capabilities make it well suited to the repair of localised muscle groups. ROCKTAPE helps enhance performance when applied to a specific muscle group by: -: Promoting blood flow to the muscles -: Promoting lymphatic drainage -: Assisting in the removal of lactic acid -: Reducing muscle vibration These functions enable ROCKTAPE to provide athletes with additional endurance and promote recovery. For more detailed information on how ROCKTAPE works contact one of the team at Malibu Podiatry, 9592-3122.

07.01.2022 Fascinating Foot Facts: # 17If the shoe fits In the Middle Ages the British devised a system for measuring shoe size based on the length of the last, measured in barleycorn, an old English measuring unit that equates to 1/3 inch.... Increments started from the smallest practical size, which is size zero. A child’s size zero was equivalent to a hand, another English measuring unit, which was 4 inches or 12 barleycorns. Shoe sizes went up to size 13 & for children (8 & inches or 25 & barleycorns). Thus, the calculation for a child shoe size in the UK is: 3 x last length in inches minus 12 = child shoe size, therefore: 3 x 4 minus 12 = size 0 (UK) 3 x 4 & 1/3 minus 12 = size 1 (UK) 3 x 4 & 2/3 minus 12 = size 2 (UK) 3 x 5 minus 12 = size 3 (UK) And so it continues up to size 13 & (UK). 3 x 8 & minus 12 = size 13 & (UK). An adult size 1 (UK) shoe is then the next size up (8 & 2/3 inches or 26 barleycorns). Thus, the calculation for an adult size shoe in the UK is: 3 x last length in inches minus 25 = adult shoe size, therefore, 3 x 8 & 2/3 minus 25 = size 1 (UK) 3 x 9 minus 25 = size 2 (UK), and so on Confused? It may take a little while but read over it again and I’m sure that in no time at all it will be as clear as mud! (and we haven’t even touched on the US or European system)

06.01.2022 Ditch the high heels for health’s sake!!! Women have long been warned about the dangers of wearing stilettos and a recent study of emergency department data shows high heels pose a definite danger to their wearer. An analysis of Victorian emergency department records covering five years shows there were 305 presentations to hospital for injuries related to high heels, patients most commonly aged between 20 to 24.... Most injuries occurred on weekends, indicating high heels and partying is a dangerous combination. The majority of injuries associated with high heel footwear were ankle sprains and it is estimated that the cost to the Victorian health system was almost $72,000. The analysis, published in the Journal of Foot and Ankle Research, also showed that those aged 55 and over are either well practiced at tottering around in heels or have ditched their party shoes for more sensible attire.

01.01.2022 Some months ago Malibu Podiatry instigated an initiative to collect socks that were being used once in the capturing of 3-dimensional foot scans, and then subsequently discarded, and provide them to people less fortunate than many of us who were able to benefit from a perfectly good product that was been sent to land fill. At around the same time Principal Podiatrist, Mark Ould, was introduced to Elizabeth Stroud, a Director of Discovery Learning Pty Ltd, a Western Australian... training and development company that had worked across Africa and Tanzania for twenty years. After subsequent communication between the parties The Socks for Schools Project was established and Mark was assured that the socks collected would be distributed to children in rural schools, especially in areas of colder climate. The most recently distributed socks were sent to a school for blind children in the Usambara mountains, an extremely cold region, which is partially funded by the government and partially funded by a church. Below are photos of a few of the 64 children at the school receiving their socks.
