25.01.2022 The new medical centre is now up and running! It looks great, feels great and the staff are super happy! A wonderful achievement for our little community. Thank you to everyone who helped make it happen and that includes our wonderful visitors. Pics coming as soon as the landscaping is finished.

25.01.2022 Okay Mallacoota we need to take action. Yesterday at the markets a woman was badly cut and required 9 sutures. Nearly two hours wait for an ambulance to b dispatched via Ballarat control then two hours up to Bega and, luckily, she was attended to on the stretcher as they were full so was able to be brought back by our great ACOs and not having to wait for her older parents to drive up and pick her up at some ungodly hour as is so often the case. The Federal Government funds 2...4 hour medical triage care in Orbost (which has a hospital), Canne River (a very small population) and, would you believe it, Pambula which is only 20 minutes from a major hospital in Bega, but we have been told Mallacoota does not require 24 hour care services. What the...? As you all know we have about 10 thousand visitors flooding the town, accidents all over the place and no 24 hour service. What will it take, a death of a Federal Politician or their child? We need to start lobbying Darren Chester through emails and phone calls. He is coming to Mallacoota soon so I will try and speak to him directly and perhaps some of you could too. Can someone let me know when and where he will be? Doctor Search and Sara have been trying to get funding for this service to be allocated to Mallacoota but keep being told we don't need this level of care to be available. Rubbish. This ankle could have been sutured, dressed and heaps of stress avoided to all concerned, particularly the injured woman. Please share this and get us all talking about the neglect of this Government and the risk we are all at because of the ridiculous bureaucratic decisions made about what we so desperately need. 24.01.2022 The Coalition promised 10,000 more Aged Care packages but forgot to put them in the budget. Please sign the petition.

21.01.2022 Isn't this a great idea!

20.01.2022 The Medical Centre is underway!

20.01.2022 The Mallacoota Fundraising group have done SOOO much work to raise this huge amount of money which they have, for the most part, donated buy equipment for the Medical Centre. Most notably the ultrasound machine. The equipment bought by donated funds is wholly owned by the community and is used for our benefit to minimise the number of trips by injured or unwell people to Merimbula. Congratulations, Martin and Mariska!!

18.01.2022 We are now working on stage 2, a high care nursing facility including palliative care unit. This is our foot in the door to residential aged care in the community. If you'd like to help, this page now has a donate button. We'd love your help to keep our aged and infirm in the community.

16.01.2022 We're at the markets letting people know how much we've achieved and asking for donations for landscaping and the ambulance entry. Can YOU help?

13.01.2022 The "halfway "opening of the new Medical center. A big turnout and lots of support from the Community. Thank you to Minister Darren Chester for attending and helping us along our journey. Thank you too to Marg Bogart from Gippsland primary health network and to many others who traveled long distances to share in this occasion. We are reinvigorated by your support.

12.01.2022 More of the crew who are making this project possible. Thank you all so much.

12.01.2022 I received this from Dr Sara the other day but sorry folks I have been a bit occupied with skiing the steep and deep and concentrating on not becoming a patient.... Have also been focussing on a paper for the National Rural Health Conference Hobart which CHIRF will be at to try to reinforce our Dr Search activity. We are sharing a stand with Bega Valley Medical Clinic who are publicising their Teen Clinic. An example of cross border cooperation. Dr Sara just messaged me to say the session with Dr Mariani went very well. Her comment was that it saved nearly 2500kms of patient travel. As the days go by MMC and CHIRF will be ramping up these sorts of specialist medical related GP Hubbed activities. regards to all see you back in Paradise soon Robin CARDIAC CARE COMES TO MALLACOOTA! (Written by Dr. Sara Renwick-Lau) Mallacoota Medical Centre (MMC) This Friday 22nd Feb, the Mallacoota Medical Centre will be running it’s first cardiac clinic, thanks to Dr. Justin Mariani (visiting cardiologist from Melbourne), Sean Priestly (Bairnsdale Echocardiogram Service) and Carla de la Rue (Mallacoota Med Centre Practice Nurse), who has juggled patients and appointment times to ensure a very busy, but well organised day. Approximately 40 patients will access the visiting cardiology service. What is the need? Cardiovascular disease is heart, stroke and blood vessel diseases. It effects one in 6 people in Australia and kills one Australian every 12 minutes. Each year, around 57,000 Australians suffer a heart attack. This equates to one heart attack every 10 minutes. Long term heart disease is the single leading cause of death in Australia and one in 4 people in Gippsland are living with heart disease, compared to one in 5 people in the city. The visiting cardiology service with ensure that people with heart disease who find it difficult to travel away can still access high-quality cardiac care. What happens with Heart Disease? The symptoms of long-term heart disease include breathlessness, fatigue, chest pain and can include poor sleep, depression and low mood or anxiety. Heart disease affects quality of life and can lead to breathing difficulties, decreased ability to enjoy or perform daily activities and frequent Hosptial admissions What can be done? Treating heart disease is most effective when it involves a number of different health care providers. These include a regular GP, a chronic disease care nurse, a cardiologist, an echocardiography service, community nurses, exercise professionals, pharmacists, mental health care workers, cardiac rehabilitation and remote pacemaker monitoring services. Now that all sounds very fancy and you might say that we couldn’t manage that out here in Mallacoota. However this Friday we are able to close the loop on the the provision of high quality cardiac care - right here at home. What is the role of all these health care providers? Having a number of different health care providers involves co-ordination and co-operation between services. Mallacoota has been very fortunate that Dr. Justin Mariani has made himself available for patients of the Mallacoota Medical Centre - sometimes at short notice, via Telehealth (skype consultation) and in person in Melbourne (for procedures), Bairnsdale and now in Mallacoota. Here is a list of local health care providers who are currently assisting heart disease patients in Mallacoota and what they do Doctors at the Mallacoota Medical Centre - Dr Sara and Dr. Mubashar diagnose and treat all heart diseases - eg heart attack, cardiomyopathy and heart arrythmias Check all patients for any risk factors that may cause heart disease and help people with decreasing their risk of developing heart disease - Eg - ask about smoking, check blood pressure and cholesterol levels, test for diabetes and kidney disease, check exercise levels and talk about weight educate patient about how to look after their heart disease Co-ordinate the involvement of other health care providers Cardiologist - Dr. Justin Mariani use medications, devices and other treatments eg pacemakers, cardiac stenting, cardioversion (putting the heart rhythm back to normal) to improve heart function and decrease the risk of any worsening problems Advise GPs about what to check for and when to change treatments Practice nurse and community nurses - Carla, Mary-Anne and Colleen Develop self-management plans for managing risk factors and symptoms Educate patients about medications, self-monitoring and when to seek medical attention Pharmacists - Pi ng and Emmanuel Provide medications and medication advice Dose administration aids eg Webster packing to assist with organising multiple medications Home medication checks (Emmanuel) Echocardiography - Sean Priestly Echo is an important way to diagnose heart disease, monitor heart function and check for problems Enables treatments to be tailored to a patients heart function Pacemaker and internal defibrillator monitoring - Nick Young remote monitoring services allow patients with pacemakers and other implanted devices to ensure that the pacemaker is working correctly. allows the pacemaker to be read to see what the patients heart rhythm has been like. Cardiac Rehabilitation - Emma Anthony and Maddy Sands an exercise and education program which has been shown to decrease the chances that a person with heart disease will need to go to hospital being sedentary is a very common risk factor for the development of heart diseases and exercising has been shown to improve the symptoms of heart disease and decrease the risk of worsening disease. In the past, access to a cardiologist and echocardiography involved at least a trip to Bairnsdale or Bega, once or twice per year for people with heart disease. We now have available co-ordinated and comprehensive care in Mallacoota with minimal travel for and hopefully better outcomes for patients. A word about Cardiac Rehabilitation and being HEALTH WISE. Because cardiac rehabilitation programs rely on weekly sessions over a period of time - getting to our closest program involved a trip to Pambula every weeknot something that was particularly attractive to those who have recently suffered a heart attack or who are already feeling unwell with their heart disease. To solve this problem, the Mallacoota Medical Centre held it’s first Cardiac Rehabilitation session at the MDHSS hall this month thanks to Emma Anthony (Allied Health Assistant) and Maddy Sands (Registered Nurse). Emma and Maddy are employed by the Mallacoota Medical Centre with the assistance of funding sought by CHiRF. All have worked hard to develop this local program from scratch. Thanks to the CHiRF volunteers, who are pursuing funding to fill gaps in health services in Mallacoota, and to the dedication of our growing team of health care providers - HEALTH WISE is bringing cardiac rehabilitation services to people in Mallacoota to improve patient outcomes. More about HEALTH WISE in coming weeks. And finally, a word about YOUR RISK. If you are a smoker, are overweight, have a family history of heart disease, kidney disease or diabetes or you have not had your blood pressure or cholesterol checked, or if these are high OR if you have any symptoms of heart disease such as chest pain, breathlessness or fatigue, please speak to one of our doctors about an assessment of your risk of heart disease and what our team can do to diagnose and treat heart disease or to help you decrease your risk of developing heart disease.

09.01.2022 Mallacoota Doctor Search is off to Hobart at the end of March to attend the National Rural Health Conference. Attending conferences is a VERY expensive but an extremely worthwhile way of marketing marvellous Mallacoota to health professionals. If you'd like to help fund it, our bank details are Medical Account: BSB 633000 AC159526776 and all donations over $2 are tax deductible. Just PM us and we'll arrange to send you a receipt.
