25.01.2022 Mallacoota Community Update 01/06/20 Eileen Buckland from the Mallacoota sewing club now has about half of the donated quilts to distribute to locals that have been fire affected. The trailer is ready for anyone who wants to use it.... For information, the United petrol station at Cann river has closed for renovations. Rotary has asked for some information on what type of winter clothing residents need. Please PM me so that we can target the next delivery. There are still a few bikes left including one childs bike and two for older children. The leftover hiking shoes are all in small sizes. Next week when school starts back I will take them up to the school at 8.00 am so that parents dropping off can see if they fit any of their kids and take some. Any that are left over will be donated to Givit who have requested some.
22.01.2022 Mallacoota Community Update 03/06/20 I have had a great delivery of new warm handknitted beanies. Next Monday I’m putting them out at the school along with the shoes I have left and any students are welcome to grab a pair and a beanie for winter. Eileen Buckland now has all of the quilts and is distributing them around town. Please contact her if you would like one.... A lot of people have been asking me about bridge rebuilding along the tracks in the National Park. To give you an idea of the size of the task ahead for Vic Parks, Mallacoota alone has over 450 assets that need replacing. This includes; signs, jetties, bridges, drains, etc. All of these assets are insured but when you include all of Croajingolong it is an immense task that will probably require a project manager to handle. Our local rangers are flat out doing their best to get everything back up and open so we just need to be patient. Last night the Recovery Committee met face to face for the first time. It was very productive and a media release will be coming out shortly to update everyone on how things are going.
15.01.2022 Mallacoota Community Update 06/08/20 As we enter stage 3 lockdown for the second time this year, with mandatory mask wearing and restricted border crossing, this has resulted in a huge slow down of donations. There are several groups wanting to donate items including more winter clothing and quilts but are unable to get them to Mallacoota as nearly all originate from Melbourne. There are still a few bicycles available to anyone needing them as well as a range of clothing mai...nly for children and women. If anything else manages to get through via courier or post, I’ll let everyone know. I received a phone call a few days ago from Ausnet services. About 4 years ago the site for the battery backup power system for Mallacoota was chosen next to the water treatment plant. The bushfires and coronavirus delayed the installation but I’m happy to say that the system was delivered last week and will be operational by the end of the year (hopefully). This will remove about 95% of our power outages which I’m sure everyone will agree will be very much welcome. The community trailer is available to anyone in the township who needs to borrow it. Just let me know and I can help you get it onto your vehicle if you need it. And finally I have been made aware of some people who are unable to differentiate between when I am writing personally or as the representative of organisations that I’m a member of such as the RSL (even though they aren’t mentioned). 11.01.2022 Mallacoota Community Update 26/10/20 The Melbourne Chamber Orchestra concert in Mallacoota is now open for bookings. See the poster below for booking details. Be quick as they will go fast. This is a very rare opportunity to listen to a world class chamber orchestra. The commercial LED lighting is still coming. I just need to get down to Lakes to pick them up. We have had another delivery of quilts and they will be available from Eileen after I deliver them to her. Shortly ...there will be some more tools available that are needed. Some will be for loan and some others for donation. Details to follow. Thats it for now. Wear a mask, keep your distance, stay safe. See more
08.01.2022 Mallacoota Community Update 26/09/20 Some fantastic warm days have arrived and a few hardy tourists have even been swimming in what is still fairly cold water temperatures. Spring flowers are out and Covid restrictions look like easing so hopefully we can all get back to the new normal soon. It is also great to see some tourists arriving from regional Victoria. Everyone I have spoken to is keen to help Mallacoota recover and accept town concerns regarding social distancing, m...ask wearing and hand washing. A lot are regular Mallacoota visitors and are keen to see the town that they love and hear the stories of our recovery. We have had a lot of new workers who have recently arrived to help with recovery. Simon Webb is installing new solar units on new and existing homes, Teagan Moore is the new social worker at the school, Michael Amos is the housing and welfare officer at MDHSS and Ken Spackman is the new manager at our community bank just to name a few. If anyone needs specific items/tools to help with their recovery please contact me as I am now getting offers to provide specific items, but I need to know what people require. All of the RSPCA animal packs have gone. There are still a few odds and sods as a few people ratted the bags and only took a few items from them. All of the new workwear has also been snapped up. There is still a fair bit of winter clothing available as well as knitted throw rugs and still some excellent handmade quilts. If anyone requires some commercial LED lighting for sheds or other purposes, there will be a delivery shortly care of the fantastic crew at Lakes Rotary. I have already had several people put their hands up for some when they arrive. Everyone should save the date Friday, December 4th on their calendar as the Melbourne Chamber Orchestra is coming to Mallacoota to give a free concert (maybe more than one if Covid restrictions allow). It will be at the Golf Club. Times are still to be finalised but as soon as I know it will be in the Mouth and posters around town. The MCO are giving free concerts throughout fire affected communities in East Gippsland including Sarsfield, Omeo and Sale. This will will be a fantastic opportunity to listen to a world class chamber orchestra that should not be missed. The above content is my own personal view, and not necessarily the view of MADRA.
07.01.2022 The sign makes it easier for drop off of donations and lets people know which shed to go to.
07.01.2022 Mallacoota Community Update 28/08/20 Disclaimer - https://bit.ly/2D3Icl4 As we hunker down with the fire lit and adapt as best we can to our second lockdown after the summer bushfires it is easy to pick up your phone and see what is happening locally on social media (mainly facebook). You see a post that you don’t agree with and read the comments below. Suddenly, you're angry and feel the need to comment as well. It’s far easier to tap a few buttons to comment in the comfort...Continue reading
