23.01.2022 FURNITURE FOR SALE Well we've got good news and we've got bad news. The good news is we've never been busier helping people start new businesses and existing businesses to grow online.... The bad news is we've decided to close our coworking space in Swan Hill, take our business online and work from home (which the Premier has asked us to do the past six months). It is clear with social distancing measures that group workshops and events now and in the future will always be at risk of disruption. We're confident that online delivery of coaching/mentoring and workshops is the way forward, rendering our street address an unnecessary overhead. Mallee Rising is self funded and in 3.5 years never received a dollar in grant funding and next to zero support from our council (ie. ratepayer dollars) even though we were confident our activities were making a difference and having a social and economic impact. Two out of every three dollars earned went into keeping the doors open and the lights on which left very little to put food on the table. I'm proud Mallee Rising provided a welcoming space 52 weeks of the year for people needing support to turn an idea into a business and building capability and increasing digital literacy in the community and local small businesses. Our business was becoming more financially sustainable as each year passed - and we were profitable - but as any small business owner will tell you there's often very little left over once all the bills are paid and it's a challenging lifestyle (hence the importance of shopping local). We were probably another 2-3 years away from hitting top gear which would have made our space a truly unique asset in a regional community but it's mentally and emotionally draining to fund physical infrastructure for the community without buy-in and support from key stakeholders. Send us a message and make us an offer on any of the furniture pictured (happy to offer it free, as always, to community groups/not-for-profits): - Tables x8 (1200mm x 750mm x 710mm) - Chairs x22 (very comfy) - Wall timber slats (4300mm x 135mm x 5mm) - Bench inside front window (2750mm x 600mm x 750mm) It's a new chapter for Mallee Rising, not the end.

18.01.2022 When horse racing analyst Kevin Casey approach Mallee Rising 10 weeks ago seeking a new website we weren't really sure we were the right people to help. We soon discovered Kevin was a respected expert in the Sydney horse racing industry and he was providing race previews and analysis on radio, TV and print from his home base in rural Swan Hill 9 hours from Sydney! It was clear that Kevin was after more than a website - he was really after a digital strategy to monetise his kn...owledge and turn it into an online business. Check out www.advantageraceform.com.au Over the past two months we've created a truly digital business with Kevin - an e-commerce website on Squarespace, paying subscribers managed using MemberSpace, a weekly email newsletter designed using Mailchimp, registered a domain name, setup business grade email with G Suite, created business automation efficiencies using Zapier, engaged local Kim Deylen Creative to work on the visual identity and logo, did all our meetings on Zoom and managed the entire project plan using Airtable! We fell in love with this project from the beginning - for us it's not about horse racing. It's the fact that anyone with an idea can create a scalable startup business anywhere in regional Australia. It's important to showcase stories such as Kevin's - technology is an enabler that can create economic opportunities and growth for communities in regional, rural and remote Australia. This challenge allowed us to bring our full range of digital experience and skills to the project - we guide and build digital businesses, not just websites. If you're in regional Australia and want to build a scalable business and reach new customers in new markets, get in touch at [email protected]

10.01.2022 In the past three-and-a-half years we have had the pleasure of meeting and supporting thousands of interesting people with big visions and fascinating backgrounds, like Mick Harrower, known to many as Roger, and to the wider community as The Modern Butcher. Roger has sold his dynamic business which closes today (Wed) and reopens Monday under new ownership as Your Regional Butcher. Roger has been a regular visitor to Mallee Rising, attending our Facebook Marketing workshops, ...building a website for his business with his own hands under our guidance and countless chats about ideas to value-add to his business, such as the provedore and the Countertop Wine label he launched with his friend Chris. We thought it fitting to reshare a video of a young Rog back in January 2018 when we were toasting his new business after a workshop at Mallee Rising. Here's to Roger (and his wife Gemma) and all the entrepreneurs in regional communities with dreams to be their own boss, open their own business and the courage to do it.

10.01.2022 I find few things more satisfying than leading a workshop, meeting business owners and entrepreneurs, understanding their aspirations and challenges... and sharing some knowledge to hopefully help them take their businesses to another level. Thank you to Amy from CohunaCo for the invitation to present to the 10 local businesses going through her 6 week Bush Biz Boost program and to the Cohuna and District Progress Association and Gannawarra Shire Council for making the program possible.

04.01.2022 We've just signed the following petition. Farmers and regional towns are suffering due to a city-centric, bureaucracy driven, out-of-touch approach. With a stretch of Australia from Mildura to Longreach now COVID-free, it’s time to put politics aside so we can get Australia growing. Australia has now been living with COVID-19 for over six months. It’s time to move past the panic, find a new business as usual.... This failure of governments to agree on a sensible, risk-based solution is extremely concerning for farmers and rural and regional Australia. The panicked crisis management approach that has arbitrarily shut state borders must be immediately replaced with a consistent and workable approach that provides certainty for agricultural movements. We need a risk mitigation approach that puts health concerns first and takes a common sense approach to movement for the purpose of food and fibre production. It’s non-sensical that movements predominantly between from areas with zero active or recorded cases are prohibited. The stretch of land between Mildura in Victoria to Longreach in Queensland has zero active cases. It begs the question: why are we restricting these movements based on artificial state boundaries? With Premiers and Chief Ministers due to meet to consider a way forward, help add your support to open up our food bowl and get regional Australia growing again.

03.01.2022 Escaped for the weekend and was really delighted to discover the Country Delights cafe (opened during COVID-19) in St Arnaud on the way home. As anyone with a young family knows, discovering a town with a nice cafe opposite a park to stop at and break up a long drive is a godsend. We've driven through St Arnaud (named after Marshal St Arnaud who led the French army against the Russians in the Crimean War in 1854) many times: sometimes we've stopped at a cafe in the main stree...t, many times we've just continued without stopping. Finding a cafe in an old red brick council building opposite the park enticed us to stop and also discover the old court house, old Crown Lands office and presumably old post office which we have never noticed before. We'll lock in St Arnaud as a preferred stop on future trips to the south and expect many other families will stop, discover and spend money in St Arnaud too. Here's to entrepreneurs in Mallee towns creating reasons for travellers to stop and spend and good luck to everyone giving it a go.
