25.01.2022 As spring emerges and Victoria works ever closer to an end to the lockdown, we send our best wishes and thanks to all those who are doing their bit to keep all of us safe. A special thanks go to those who are isolated, missing family and friends, and not able to participate in their usual social and community activities - you are not forgotten. Even in regional Victoria, many of us are feeling the pinch and missing family and friends. This old postcard perhaps says it all, but we anticipate being able to leave the safety and confines of our homes soon and see you in person with a smile!

23.01.2022 Social Distancing at work. This photo of the Dodd family was taken on their farm at Malmsbury in about 1920. Taking a break from work to pose for the camera, they show how, a century later, we can keep on working while sticking to social distancing rules. Thank you to everyone who is helping to control the current COVID outbreak in Victoria by following the health guidelines and adapting to keep our local community running.

22.01.2022 The streets of Malmsbury are fairly quiet at the moment but our core shops are still open for business. This photo, taken about 1880, shows the building now occupied by the Malmsbury Bakery. They are doing their very best to keep us supplied with their yummy produce in these difficult times. Well done!

17.01.2022 Recognise this antique-looking shop? While the occupants may have changed many times over the last 130-odd years, the building still looks much the same. It was built in 1882 as two separate shops for Robert Hunter. At the time this photograph was taken (ca 1904) shoemaker Edward Stone (at far left) was in the left-hand shop and the right-hand side was a bakery. Today it houses Rathdowne Antiques. They are still open for business each day from 10 to 5, but BY APPOINTMENT ONLY. With Mother's Day right on the horizon, what better place to find that special gift for a very special person?

16.01.2022 As of today (March 18 2020) we have decided to suspend our open days for the time being, unless we have an agreed prior appointment and visitors have no risk factors for Covid-19/Corona Virus. But we can still undertake research for you whether it be on your Malmsbury ancestors or your local property. We will let you know as soon as possible when we will re-open and we wish our members and followers all the best over the following weeks.

16.01.2022 CAN YOU HELP? Malmsbury Historical Society is looking for donations of any of these small plastic boxes in which Cotton Tips are sold. It is important that the boxes are a soft flexible plastic and have the "05 PP" (Polypropylene) plastic code on them. (Boxes made of non-flexible and breakable plastic are NOT required.) We aim to use these boxes to store small mineral samples and other small objects in our collection, and polypropylene is regarded as being archive safe. Boxes can be dropped off at 71 Mollison Street Malmsbury on Friday mornings, or at other times the doors are open. Contact us for details. If the labels can be removed beforehand, that is great, but not essential. We would rather re-purpose than buy new plastic!

15.01.2022 OUR FRIDAY OPEN DAYS HAVE RECOMMENCED. The summer break is over for us and the local school kids. This photo of a tree planting day at the Malmsbury State School was taken in the early 1900s. It shows the adults are working hard to make a better world for their children. Today we would like to acknowledge Malmsbury's children and adults who continue their long-term commitment to create and maintain a great living and working environment. We in turn look forward to some more serious digging in our archives in 2020.

13.01.2022 THIS PUBLIC MEETING HAS BEEN POSTPONED FOR SEVERAL MONTHS. WE WILL RESCHEDULE THE TALK AND RE-POST WHEN WE HAVE NEW DETAILS. PUBLIC MEETING MARCH 18 7:30 p.m. AT MALMSBURY All welcome to hear Brendan Moore of Yarra Valley Water give the inaugural Ross Young Memorial Lecture at the Malmsbury Town Hall. See our flyer or our Facebook events section for further details. Brendan will lead us in a discussion on his personal journey as a water professional and the biggest challenges... in the future that he sees for the water industry. He will share his journey of development as a leader through the Water Services Association of Australia’s (WSAA) leadership program to winning the inaugural Ross Young Scholarship and creating and implementing Pride in Water, an industry-wide approach to LGBTIQ+ inclusion. Brendan will explore the approach taken to establishing Pride in Water through industry collaborations and partnerships and why diversity and inclusion initiatives not only benefit workers from a safety and wellbeing perspective, but how they make economic business sense too. 11.01.2022 Thank you again to our local businesses continuing to adapt and support our local community. This late-1930's postcard shows the "new" Malmsbury Hotel on the right (the original 2-storey wooden once was demolished to allow the rebuild) and on the left is the small wooden shop which has recently become the Malmsbury Pharmacy. David and Anda at the Hotel have the bottle shop open and take-away evening meals can be bought Wednesday-Sunday. The Pharmacy is open Monday to Saturday and Beshr can meet your medication needs and provide friendly professional advice. Well done!

09.01.2022 Malmsbury in 1920 and 2020. It is a bit over a century since this letter from former resident Edward Morley appeared in the Kyneton Guardian on 10 February 1920. At the time the Malmsbury Gardens were rather neglected and Morley consided that "Malmsbury should become one of the healthiest resorts in the State". It is wonderful to see that since then the Council and Friends of the Malmsbury Gardens and Environs are taking care of them and they remain one of the key outdoor assets which make the town a wonderful place to live, especially in current times when we need plenty of space to keep us safe.

07.01.2022 At a time when we are needing to do more shopping online, thankfully we have our local Malmsbury Post Office and General Store team ready to send and receive our mail. The grocery items and take away food also enable us to minimise the amount of time we need to spend away from our homes and maximise our efforts to slow the march of COVID-19. This post card from 1919 not only shows the General Store as it was at the time, but also the previous Mamsbury Hotel building and the 1919 ANZAC Day parade. Sadly this year's parade wont go ahead but the store and hotel are still doing their best.

06.01.2022 This photo of the 1929-30 Malmsbury Cricket Team has been shared by a follower of our page, and who is also the grandchild of the umpire in the photo, L Dines. Those in the photo are Back Row: T Airey, C Hutchinson, A Elliott, G O'Meara, A Morgan, L Dines (umpire). Front Row:E Ogden, J Kirwan, Rev. B Syer, W Hooppell (captain), H Young, J O'Sullivan. Team members absent were M Ogden, A Gilmore and A Hooppell. Some of you may recognise family members. Cricket has been played at Malmsbury since 1852 and a club formed in 1856. We look forward to when the current club members can continue this tradition.

01.01.2022 Kyneton Museum re-opened yesterday with this new home-grown history exhibition. If you have an interest in the history of the Macedon Ranges, including Malmsbury's quarrying and bluestone heritage, then hop along and see what the museum has to offer.
