Our kangaroos are protected and should never be mistreated. It is also important not to scare them into the path of traffic, for the sake of the kangaroo and the people in the car. If you really don’t want kangaroos in your garden, you can: Move to one of the many places where there are no kangaroos. Okay, not an option, th...Continue reading

18.01.2022 PLANT A POLLINATOR FRIENDLY GARDEN Eurobodalla Council offers residents bush-friendly garden visits to help residents make the best choices for native plants that will delight pollinators. For more information visit https://www.esc.nsw.gov.au//get-help/free-bush-friendly-ga or contact Council’s natural resources team on 4474 1000. In Eurobodalla, birds, bees, bugs and bats pollinate and spread the seed of native plants and forest trees as well as helping agriculture and blo...oming gardens increasing biodiversity and resilience in plant populations. Some Australian plants completely depend on native bees for pollination. The smallest native bee is the yellow Quasihesma bee just larger than a pinhead. The largest is the great carpenter bee that is over two centimetres long. The blue-banded and teddy-bear bees will be familiar to many gardeners. The best way to help all bees is to plant more bee-attracting flowering plants and have gardens that flower all year round. For example, banksias, melaleucas, grevilleas and eucalypts or non-natives like perennial basil, salvias and lavenders. Encourage native solitary bee species by providing bee hotels. Pithy stems and holes in timber are a must for a bee hotel. Bloodwoods and spotted gums are flying-fox favourites, while pollinating birds are attracted to callistemons, grevilleas and melaleucas - native and non-native varieties.

17.01.2022 Bush Fire Season has officially started. I know we feel it has only just finished! We are still getting charred logs, fence posts and ash washed up on the beach. But, local RFS stations are planning lots of events this weekend (18-21 September) to help us 'Get Ready' and be prepared to prevent loss of life and property this summer. 16.01.2022 WARNING! PRINCES HWY @ SURFSIDE TURNOFF (Berrima Pde) Please be careful coming over the crest in the 100 zone! Every morning traffic has been at a standstill d...ue to bridge works and motorists like sitting ducks! Last week we watched a semi lock up before nearly taking out everyone in the left hand merge lane and this morning we witnessed a poor motorcyclist nearly rear end a stationary vehicle as he came over the crest. He manoeuvred to the left missing the rear of the vehicle, but took out the side mirror at speed! I have alerted police that it is only a matter of time before a serious if not fatal incident occurs. Bridge traffic management needs to be upgraded on this spot. 2 years ago we had a flashing rear end accident sign put there for this very reason.... why is it not being used!????? See more

16.01.2022 OUR PRIMARY STUDENTS HELPING LITTLE PENGUINS: Year 4 students from Batemans Bay Public and St Bernard’s Primary Schools have been cleaning up at Surfside and Caseys Beaches. Students collected items such as plastic food packaging, bottles, cans and fishing line, all a threat to little penguins and other marine wildlife. Rubbish like this has been found in the nests of the penguins on Snapper Island. The students removed more than 50 kilograms of rubbish, which was sorted and ...the ogged in Australian Marine Debris Initiative Database using the Tangaroa Blue app. These students are helping to find solutions and identify the source of the problem, finding the best way to help our wildlife is to avoid single-use plastic and reduce rubbish getting into the environment in the first place by disposing of waste properly. Additional clean-ups with Sunshine Bay Public School and the Batemans Bay High School Student Environment Council are planned for the near future. For more information contact Lily Berry on [email protected] or visit https://www.esc.nsw.gov.au//ge/marine-debris-working-group

13.01.2022 HELP STOP ILLEGAL TRADE OF PROHIBITED WATER WEEDS There are already several infestations of water weeds such as frogbit, salvinia and water hyacinth, in Eurobodalla and they’re very costly to try to control. These plants put our environment and our economy at risk and the community can help. Eurobodalla residents with information about the trade of invasive plants and water weeds can now report it with confidence to Crime Stoppers. Trading water weeds like frogbit, salvinia a...nd water hyacinth is illegal and can be catastrophic to the local environment because these water plants grow quickly, block waterways, reduce water quality, and can cost hundreds of thousands of dollars to control. Apparently, people put weeds like water hyacinth and salvinia in aquariums, frog ponds and water features in their backyard, they grow like crazy and sometimes spread or get dumped into a waterbody. It is illegal to grow and propagate certain invasive plants and water weeds, with penalties of up to $1.1 million and three years’ gaol for individuals found to be selling them. Community members with information on local propagators or sellers or who see ads on line can contact NSW Crime Stoppers, on 1800 333 000 or report it online at https://nsw.crimestoppers.com.au/ Crime Stoppers just need to know what you know, not who you are. Some of these plants need to be reported to the biosecurity hotline. Crimestoppers will do that for you. For more information visit https://weeds.dpi.nsw.gov.au See more

08.01.2022 We extend our sympathies to Elizabeth and Jane Gordon. Ian GORDON 11.02.31 - 04.11.20 Ian slipped away on Wednesday night after fighting with Parkinson's. Ian, and his wife of 61 years, Elizabeth, had a long association with Maloneys Beach, building a holiday bungalow here in 1984. After living for several years in France, Maloneys Beach became their permanent residence from 2002. Ian was a participant of the MBRA, and was active in having a proposed caravan park off Northco...ve Drive halted. A horticulturist by qualification, Ian was concerned about maintaining the natural amenity and peaceful environment of Maloneys Beach. He would be appalled about the more recent wanton acts of vandalism, of the fire board for example, and used to get very cross about camp fires left burning and the destruction of the bollards along the beach front. Elizabeth, afflicted with dementia, remains in aged care, but enjoys seeing photos from the "early days" here. See more

05.01.2022 LIBRARY'S SURVEY ON BOOKS Please complete the library's survey at https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/Eurolibrary_survey and be in the draw to win a $100 gift card. Eurobodalla Council is looking to improve its library services and is asking members for their thoughts.... Almost 42 per cent of the shire’s population - 16,869 people - are members of either the Batemans Bay, Moruya or Narooma library. Library Services want to hear the opinions of those who don’t use it as often, as well as people who are regular library users. More than just books, the library also offers access to a wealth of e-books, audiobooks and e-magazines, as well as journals and research tools, DVDs and events. The survey will inform decision-making when prioritising efforts in the future. Feedback in the past has shown print collections remained a high priority and that the community felt a strong sense of ownership of libraries and their spaces, which connect communities and reduce isolation. Our library's focus is to build on that sense of community and being a place where people can feel included.

05.01.2022 ROAD SAFETY IS EVERY DRIVERS' BUSINESS National Road Safety Week this year urged all motorists to commit to driving safely as if their loved ones were on the road ahead of them. More than 1,220 people are killed and another 35,000 seriously injured on Australian roads every year. Traffic injury is the biggest killer of Australian children under 15 and the second-biggest killer of all Australians aged between 15 and 24. And it is preventable. Our local Fire Brigade does 50% of... its callouts to motor vehicle accidents. Drivers are asked: 1. to avoid putting others at risk by speeding 2. not to drive while tired 3. never to use the phone while driving 4. not to drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs 5. to wear their seatbelt and ensure passengers do too 5. to slow down and leave space to protect the vulnerable (that includes wildlife) Motorists who really want to commit to being part of the solution can also take the road safety pledge at https://roadsafetyweek.com.au/
