21.01.2022 Ideally, we should obtain all the nutrients our bodies require directly from our diet. But its not always possible to eat a well-balanced diet from all five food groups. Our food choices may not deliver all the nutrients required, or your body may have specific nutritional needs such as during pregnancy or when breastfeeding. If you take too much or too little of a nutrient, it can also cause problems. For example, taking very high doses of vitamin B6 (pyridoxine) for lo...ng periods of time is associated with nerve damage, whilst inadequate folic acid intake during pregnancy is associated with birth defects such as spina bifida. If you think your diet is lacking, a supplement may help you meet your daily requirement until your diet is back on track. If you think you may need a nutritional supplement, chat with your friendly Malouf Pharmacies or Ramsay Pharmacy team to help identify the right supplements that may assist you in meeting your recommended dietary intake.

18.01.2022 Although we live in one of the healthiest countries, on average, Australian men die six years younger than women. However, simple changes to your lifestyle can make a world of difference! Here are 4 simple ways men can improve their health: #1 - Sleep is important! Men who sleep 7-8 hours per night have approximately 60% less risk of fatal heart attacks than those who sleep 5 hours or less. Lack of adequate sleep can also affect your immune system, energy levels and your m...ood. If you suffer from disrupted sleep, chat with our pharmacy team for advice. #2 - Its important to monitor your alcohol intake. More than 1 in 2 men engage in high-risk levels of drinking on single occasions, and 1 in 4 men consume more than the maximum recommended 2 standard drinks per day on average; this increases to almost 1 in 3 men aged 55-64. Drinking more than 10 standard drinks a week almost doubles your risk of type 2 diabetes! #3 - Eat a balanced diet with 5-7 serves of fruit and vegetables per day. Less than 1 in 30 men are eating enough fruit and vegetables, according to Australian guidelines. If you feel you are lacking nutrition, your Ramsay pharmacist can recommend supplements to help until your eating plan is back on track. #4 - Exercise is an important element in maintaining your health. Men who climb 50 stairs or walk 5 city blocks per day may lower their risk of a heart attack by 25%. Also, inactive men are 60% more likely to suffer from depression than active men. Exercise doesnt need to be hard, join some friends for a game of tennis, play football with the kids or take the dog for a daily walk. If you have any concerns about your health, talk to your doctor or health professional. Your local Malouf or Ramsay pharmacist is easy to access and always available to provide expert advice on ways to improve your health.

16.01.2022 This week raises awareness about the serious health issue of antibiotic resistance which occurs when bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites resist the effects of medications. Resistance makes common infections harder to treat and increases the risk of disease spread, severe illness and death. The more we use antibiotics, the more likely it is that drug resistant infections will develop. Appropriate use can be life-saving, but misuse or overuse needs to be minimised to prevent and contain antimicrobial resistance. It's important to maintain good hand hygiene, always take your full course of medication as prescribed and chat with your Ramsay or Malouf Pharmacist about your antibiotics or other medications to find out more and help reduce the resistance of antibiotics.

10.01.2022 1.2 million people (over 2 years of age) or almost 5% of the population of Australia, have been diagnosed with diabetes, but an estimated 500,000 more go undiagnosed. As the fastest growing chronic disease in Australia, its important to understand the types, causes, symptoms and complications of diabetes. To function properly, our bodies need to produce energy from glucose or sugar found in the food we eat. Insulin, a hormone produced by the pancreas, is essential to move ...glucose from the food we have eaten into cells to be used as energy. Diabetes occurs when the body ignores the insulin produced by the pancreas, or stops producing insulin. This affects a persons ability to use sugars properly. People with this chronic disease will experience high levels of glucose in their blood, and the high glucose levels cause damage to blood vessels and nerves over time leading to complications. Our friendly pharmacists are here to support you every step of the way. We can guide you through the steps needed to manage your diabetes well and assist by testing your blood glucose (sugar) level. Our team provide a free one-on-one consultation in the pharmacy to help you understand your medicines to obtain the most out of them and improve your future quality of life. For more information on types of diabetes, what can cause diabetes, symptoms and complications of diabetes read our blog: https://www.ramsaypharmacy.com.au//How-we-can-help-with-di

09.01.2022 Good oral health is literally a lifelong pursuit! Here are our six tips to caring for your teeth: 1 - Flossing isnt just about removing that pesky piece of chicken from between your teeth. By flossing once a day, you will help stimulate the gums, help to lower inflammation and reduce plaque build-up preventing gum disease. 2 - Brushing your teeth for two minutes gets rid of the germs and bacteria that cause tooth decay. Its important to start the day with a good brush in... the morning but even more important to brush before going to bed to remove the build-up created throughout the day. 3 - A mouthwash can act as a third line of defence in protecting your gums and teeth. A good swish and gargle once a day can lower acidity in the mouth and help clean areas that are difficult to reach with a brush or floss. 4 - Be aware of hidden sugar in your food as it converts to acidity in the mouth, which can erode the enamel of your teeth leading to cavities. Drinking water after a meal will help flush out some of the acidity and protect your teeth. 5 - Wear a mouth guard or full-face helmet if you are playing a sport that could potentially damage your teeth.Only use your teeth for chewing food. Dont risk chipping your teeth opening packages or bottles! 6 - Above all, schedule regular check-ups with your dentist. A check and clean should be done at least once if not twice a year to ensure the health of your teeth. However, if you feel any irregular tenderness or bleeding in your gums or have a toothache, book an appointment with your dentist as soon as possible. For more information or advice on a range of dental products to maintain good oral health, visit your local Malouf Pharmacies or Ramsay Pharmacy!

Above all, stay home should you feel unwell.
