24.01.2022 Flu Vaccination The flu is a contagious viral infection that is spread from person to person through the air when someone coughs, sneezes or talks. The flu is a serious condition and unlike the common cold, influenza can be debilitating and cause severe illness and life-threatening complications such as pneumonia and bronchitis, which often require hospitalisation. The flu virus is especially dangerous for elderly people, pregnant women, and very young children, as well as fo...r people with underlying medical conditions. Causes Three different types of influenza viruses infect humans: influenza A, B and C. Only influenza A and B cause major outbreaks and severe disease, and these types are included in seasonal influenza vaccines. Influenza spreads from person to person through the air by coughing or sneezing, or by direct contact with the virus on hard surfaces or peoples hands. The flu usually differs from a cold as symptoms develop suddenly, and can lead to complications such as chest infections and pneumonia particularly among the elderly and young children. Symptoms Flu symptoms tend to develop abruptly one to three days after infection, and can include: tiredness, high fever, chills, headache, coughing, sneezing, runny noses, poor appetite, and muscle aches. Most people who get the flu will suffer from mild illness and will recover in around four weeks. However, some people can develop more severe health problems, including pneumonia, bronchitis, chest and sinus infections, heart, blood system or liver complications, which can lead to hospitalisation and even death. Prevention Annual vaccination is the best way of preventing the flu and any associated illness. You should get the flu shot every year because the flu virus is constantly changing. Every year, the flu vaccine changes too, so it protects against the flu strains which are most likely to be around during that winter. In 2019 there will only be Quadrivalent Influenza Vaccines available in Australia. Your best defence against the flu is us. The quadrivalent flu vaccine helps to protect you against The recommended vaccination can be supplied and administered in house at Malouf Manly Pharmacy by our qualified and accredited pharmacists, John & Alan Malouf Bpharm. Three things you might not know about the flu vaccination: There is no live virus in the flu vaccine, so you cannot get the flu from the flu vaccine The composition of the vaccine changes every year to combat the constantly-mutating flu virus. This year we are offering the quadrivalent vaccine, which protects against four of the most common strains. The flu vaccine is safe for pregnant women at all stages of their pregnancy Please call in-store for walk in appointments at Malouf Manly Pharmacy, 15 The Corso, Manly, NSW 2095 or call 02 99771029 to make your flu shot booking.

17.01.2022 What is menopause? Menopause, also known as the change of life, marks the end of the monthly cycle of menstruation in a womans life. It is a natural occurrence and marks the end of the reproductive years, just as the first menstrual period during puberty marked the start. You will know that the menopause has taken place if you have not had any menstrual bleeding for 12 months. Most women reach menopause between the ages of 45 and 55, the average being around 51. Menopause ...before the age of 40 is called premature menopause and before the age of 45 it is called early menopause. Hormone levels fluctuate leading to menopause As you approach menopause, the production of female hormones (oestrogen and progesterone) by the ovaries starts to slow down. Hormone levels tend to fluctuate and you may notice changes in your menstrual cycle such as: cycles may become longer, shorter or totally irregular bleeding may become lighter, bleeding may become unpredictable and heavy (seek advice from your doctor). Eventually, your hormone levels will fall to a point where your ovaries stop releasing eggs, your menstruation (periods) cease altogether and the menopause is reached. Although fertility after the age of 45 is low, you still need to use contraception to prevent pregnancy (even if only barrier contraception such as male condoms), until you have had one year without a natural period if youre over 50 years old, or two years without a natural period if youre under 50. Symptoms of menopause Some of the symptoms that women may experience include: hot flushes, night sweats, aches and pains, crawling or itching sensations under the skin, forgetfulness, headaches, irritability, lack of self-esteem, reduced sex drive (libido), tiredness, difficulty sleeping wakefulness or waking hot and sweaty, urinary frequency, vaginal dryness, discomfort with sexual intercourse. www.betterhealth.vic.gov.au//conditionsandtreatm/menopause www.takeharmony.com.au/ Call into Malouf Manly Pharmacy at 15 The Corso Manly for further advise. 16.01.2022 Tears lubricate the eye and stop the surface from drying out. A thin film of tears is swept over the eye surface every time you blink. A watery layer of tears is topped with an even thinner coat of lipids (fatty compounds) that help to preserve the film. To maintain eye comfort and health, the tear film needs to remain intact between blinks. A person suffering from dry eye syndrome does not have enough of the right kind of tears to keep the eye comfortable. This can happen i...f they do not produce enough tears to keep the eye surface moist, or if for some reason the tears do not stay on the eyes long enough. Over time, the resulting dryness can damage the surface of the eyeball. Dry eye can afflict anyone of any age, but is more common as we get older because we produce a smaller volume of tears. Some medications can trigger dry eye, as can some general health conditions. Dry eye is particularly common in postmenopausal women and people with arthritis. People with dry eyes typically find it difficult to wear contact lenses. Dry eye sufferers may also have more problems in environments such as air-conditioned offices or supermarkets. There is no cure for dry eye, but its symptoms can be alleviated. Malouf Manly Pharmacy has a wide product range for the treatment of dry eye. Call in-store and discuss your options. Malouf Manly Pharmacy recommends that you consult your local optometrist for regular eye tests.
