24.01.2022 Good news folks. Despite our commitment to night shifts on the huge Currowan fire, we now have a break and will still be doing our traditional Santa Run on Christmas Eve (thats today!). We will cover the residential areas between Guerilla Bay and the northern end of Lilli Pilli commencing 3pm through to about 6pm. So, watch out for those flashing lights and a glimpse of Santa hanging out of the window with free sample bags to give away! Ho, ho, ho!! (We ask you to forgive the unkempt appearance of the trucks. Unfortunately, we havent had time to clean them up properly)

23.01.2022 Thanks to 9 of our volunteers, our hazard reduction burn today went well. There will still be some smoke drifting around the Dunns Creek area for a few days yet while we patrol it.

22.01.2022 In case you havent already seen it, the account of Dave Beare and Peter Reddells heroic defense of north Mogo on New Years Eve was published in yesterdays BayPost. Simply inspirational!

22.01.2022 Our commitments to the Currowan fire have now quietened considerably. The substantial containment lines on the fires southern edge are now likely to rebuff the next extreme weather event (hopefully not for some time yet). Our brigade members can now catch up on sleep and get ready for our Xmas party on Tuesday! Thank you, thank you to everyone who collectively has given us overwhelming support in the last two weeks.

20.01.2022 A quick snapshot of the 2018/2019 Fire Season in NSW. Malua Bay Rural Fire Brigade Members assisted not only at fires locally in the Eurobodalla, but also elsewhere in NSW, Interstate and even Overseas.

20.01.2022 This weekend we put six new recruits through an intense BushFireFighter course. Three are joining the Malua Bay brigade, two at Bingie, and one at Nelligen. They will now practise with their home brigade what they have learnt in the last two days. In the coming weeks they will be independently assessed and hopefully there will be six new fire fighters on the beat!

19.01.2022 If the weather cooperates, the Brigade will be hazard reduction burning again, next Friday 9th August on the Backhouse property of 376 Dunns Creek Road. It is next to the location of the previous burning and we plan to complete the complex on this occasion. It is likely to be listed on the "Fires Near Me" app mid next week and neighbours should get a letter of notification on the Wednesday evening prior.

17.01.2022 Along with many other RFS brigades and bushfire fighting agencies, our brigade members have been actively involved in the huge battle to contain the Currowan bushfire, mainly on night shifts. The years of training and practice are paying off with demands on members of not only direct fire suppression, but also all the other related skils in backburning, blacking out, navigation, vehicle recovery and chainsawing etc. And all performed as safely as possible.

17.01.2022 Brigade members have been involved in the huge Currowan fire battle for over a week now. We provide a truck, sometimes two, for every night shift. These photos are from the backburning off the Kings Highway near Black Flat.

16.01.2022 Yesterday, the Brigade assisted Surf Beach with a hazard reduction burn on Tallgums Way. Brigades are like that - they help each other out. Thank you to Pat, Steve, Tony and Bob C.

16.01.2022 As we very slowly get back to some sort of normality, today a couple of our Brigade members had refresher training prior to their examination next week.

16.01.2022 Our Firefighting Jackets might be Yellow and our new Pants might be Blue BUT at Malua Bay Rural Fire Brigade we are BLUES through and through OK all except Duncan who is one of our hard working and dedicated firefighters who was born in QLD May the best team win

15.01.2022 Crews have contained a grassfire on Bevian Rd near Tomakin this morning. The fire burnt about 4ha of grass land and some scrub around the edges. 10 trucks and 22 volunteers have worked on this fire this morning. Crews will continue to mop up and black out any remaining hot spots.

15.01.2022 Due to the continuing dry conditions, the Bush Fire Danger Period was introduced today 1st August 2019, two months earlier than the statuatory commencement date of 1st October. That means that the rules have changed in one important aspect (the others, such as notifications etc remain the same). A Permit is now required for the lighting of a fire in the open. Ring the Malua Bay Fire Brigade Captain Ian Barnes on 04 1577 4810, or Senior Deputy Captain Pat Harris on 4471 1379, if you wish to apply for a permit. If unanswered, please leave a verbal or text message, or ring the Moruya Fire Control Centre on 4474 2855.

14.01.2022 Thank you to the lovely person who left us this exquisitely painted rock at our shed. Nice work!

13.01.2022 Mrs Fiona Phillips MP, member for Gilmore, and our local federal parliament representative, visited our station today for a quick chat and a cup of tea. She spoke with the Brigade executive and captains. We were able to briefly relate our experiences of the last bushfire season. And, importantly, we could also relate some insight as to how the local community suffered on New Year's Eve and as to its ongoing recovery. She is pictured with us (appropriately in red) in front of our fire shed at Malua Bay.

13.01.2022 Yesterday, under extreme weather conditions, Malua Bay Brigade crews, with many other RFS and fire authority units, assisted in the defence of Moruya. Unfortunately, facing intense and fast moving fire, some homes were lost, but many were saved under very trying circumstances.

12.01.2022 The Brigade has the pleasure of presenting its Golden Driptorch award to John Raymond. The Golden Driptorch is annually awarded to a Brigade member who has served the Brigade admirably. This morning, the presentation was achieved outside the Brigade shed accompanied by acclamation from other appropriately distanced Brigade members. John has served the Brigade for many years, including four years as our very proficient Secretary. He is also an experienced fire fighter. Even into his octogenarian years he was in the thick of the recent seasons very active fires, principally as a truck driver. He has always been a very willing volunteer. Congratulations John!

12.01.2022 Would have to be the best Polling Booth in NSW! What a view! Over 250 Democracy Sausages cooked and eaten by hungry voters! Thank You so much to our local community for coming to say hello and for all your encouragement and support! Ya Gotta Love Australia

12.01.2022 Rural Fire Brigade truck drivers have to be capable of safely moving 13 tonne trucks and their crews through the bush using rough tracks and trails under arduous conditions of heat, dust and smoke. It takes training and practise. So, today seven Malua Bay Brigade drivers drove our three trucks westwards using the back roads and trails toward Bolaro Mountain and back. It was a great day and notably, no fire fighters or trucks were hurt in the process.

12.01.2022 Dont forget to change your clock back 1 hour this Sunday 7th April and replace your smoke alarm battery as daylight savings ends

12.01.2022 Today, the hazard reduction burn on the Backhouse property at Dunns Creek went well. The forest fuels were reduced, it went to schedule and there were no injuries. Thank you to all who helped and we hope the smoke didnt inconvenience too many residents. We will patrol it until it is safe. Enjoy the photos.

11.01.2022 In case you haven't already seen it, the account of Dave Beare and Peter Reddell's heroic defense of north Mogo on New Years Eve was published in yesterday's BayPost. Simply inspirational!

11.01.2022 This Thursday 15th August, the Brigade will be burning the hazard reduction area on Dunns Creek Road which we had planned last week but was postponed when the wind came up (see below).

11.01.2022 Reminder: Tea and Talk at Malua Bay next Tuesday 13 October, from 11am. Pop down for a chat and say hello to your neighbours over a cup of tea or coffee. It is an informal catch up but with access to bushfire support services if you need.

11.01.2022 Yesterday, in the relaxing atmosphere of a communal bbq and drinks, the Brigade honoured two of our most treasured members. We bade farewell to Simon May who, over his nine active years with our Brigade, made several significant contributions to both the standard of our training and in guiding us through our equipment upgradings. Simon is off to a challenging new position in Dareton, a long way from us, but our memory of him will always be near. Good luck Simon! We also h...ad the great pleasure, on behalf of the Governor General?, in presenting Tracey Anderson with the National Medal. This Australian award, available to both defence and civilian uniformed organisations, recognises long service and good conduct in serving and protecting the community at the risk of death, injury or trauma. Our President Peter Anderson, with assistance from Simon, presented Tracey with the National Medal, recognising her years of contribution to the RFS, both in, and out of, the Brigade. The presentation was carried by grand acclamation from the Brigade members. Congratulations Tracey, well done!

10.01.2022 Today the Brigade assisted a local landholder burn windrows in the Dunns Creek Road area. The Brigade will always consider assisting those who either cannot do their own burning (various reasons) or lack the confidence doing the big jobs. Our members benefit from the on ground training we get by managing fire under controlled conditions. The community benefits indirectly from the reduction of fuels in the landscape.

09.01.2022 Many landholders have been taking advantage of the excellent burning conditions of recent weeks (of course, after advising Moruya Fire Control on 4474 2855, and their neighbours, at least 24 hours beforehand). Today, our brigade assisted a landholder with a pile burn which was just a little too close to buildings. Mission accomplished.

09.01.2022 The Malua Bay Brigade, with assistance from Surf Beach and Batemans Bay Brigades, will attempt a hazard reduction burn on the Backhouse property, Dunns Creek Road, this Thursday 25th July. The property is east of Dunns Creek Road and immediately north of Dunns Creek. A mail box letter drop of immediate neighbours notifying them of the proposed burning was complete this evening. The weather forecast looks favourable and we are hoping that few neighbours will be bothered by the resulting smoke which may linger for a few days afterward.

08.01.2022 New Features in the Fires Near Me App The Fires Near Me NSW mobile application has been upgraded, with users now able to receive notifications about fires and other important safety information for local residents in the Eurobodalla. Fires Near Me NSW gives users the ability to identify the location and size of bush fire activity in areas of concern for them.... The new update now allows residents to receive push notifications for areas of interest, whether it be their home location, family properties or relatives far away. There is also a national version, Fires Near Me Australia, which provides basic information from participating fire agencies interstate. Download the Fires Near Me application today!

05.01.2022 Training has resumed for the Brigade. New recruits, and now fully qualified, firefighters Danielle and Fiona practise their hose skills, ably assisted by John who ensured ample supplies of water.

04.01.2022 Malua Bay landholders are still cleaning up after the catastrophic New Year's Eve firestorm. Now that we are entering the bushfire season, it is preferable that you hold off until autumn when the embers can be fully extinguished by ever cooling nights (that is a major reason why we promote autumn/winter burning). Nevertheless, we understand the necessity of some situations. If you wish to burn piles of debris, this is a reminder that a Fire Permit is now required and if yo...u need advice or assistance in the burning our Brigade volunteers may be able to help. Also, keep an eye on your letterbox. Our annual newsletter is currently being hand delivered by our Brigade members to all Malua Bay Brigade residents. Within it you will see details of a planned community day at the Malua Bay Beach Reserve on Saturday 26th September. Please drop in and say hello. See more

04.01.2022 Our community reconnection day is this Saturday on the Malua Bay Beach Reserve from 10am to 2pm. Please come along. We want to hear your story of what you experienced on New Year's Eve 2019, the dramatic day that bushfire visited our area with a speed and ferocity not previously seen. Perhaps we can assist you in understanding what happened, and why. We would also like to thank you for your overwhelming support, both on the day and subsequently. As well as literature on pr...eparing for the next fire season being available, we will have photos, satellite images and other visual material relating to the horrific bushfire season we all endured nine months ago. The Surf Life Saving Club, who played a vital role on New Year's Eve, will have a free sausage sandwich available for you, and our fire trucks will be there for the kids to explore, and then to perhaps experience controlling a live fire hose! You are all most welcome to come to us to talk about fire and your experience with it!

03.01.2022 This is your Fire Captain speaking. Now that some basic communications have been re-established in the Malua Bay area, we can briefly update you on Malua Bay Fire Brigade activity. As you are only too aware, a bushfire entered the Brigade area from the northwest on New Years Eve, Tuesday 31st December 2019, with such speed and intensity little could be done except save life and property. Brigade members, with very limited resources, saved some houses but unfortunately, again...st the overwhelming odds, many were lost and hundreds of people evacuated under emergency conditions.. In only a few hours, most of the Brigade area burned and over 50 houses were destroyed. The biggest losses were in the residential areas of Sylvan Road, Malua Bay and North Rosedale. Thankfully, to date, we have not received a report of loss of life or of serious injury. We are painfully conscious of the massive loss of property. To those who are now homeless our Brigade members extend their deepest sympathy. You have suffered a tragic loss. You and other community members have possibly been traumatised by the event and we encourage you to seek help. Registering at the Batemans Bay evacuation centre would be a good first step. Brigade members wish to thank those members of the community who have assisted us in the past week, such as individuals with offers of help and end of street groups who kept vigilance. Everyone we encountered, fully cooperated with our requests. To those who had well prepared properties, we hope it worked for you. To those many brave souls who stayed and defended their property, we recognise your bravery and trust you also reaped a reward. You may be interested to know how our Brigade members fared on Tuesday. Two members lost their house, one while fighting fire on a 24 hour shift. Three lost their car at the Brigade station and others suffered car and other property damage. We nearly lost our shed but for a vigilant member who alone put out the fire. Remarkably, despite the frenetic activity, we had no serious injury. In the days ahead, the weather looks to be kind to us so we will rest and concentrate on recovery. We will soon be back on deck and performing to some sort of normality. These four photos are of our Brigade. Two are of the damage. One photo is of our team, noting that many were not present at the time. Lastly, one photo reflects our attitude. Despite the horrific consequences of Tuesday, we still had time for a smile at the end of a hard days work. Thank you to everyone in our Brigade area and we sincerely hope your recovery will be successful. Ian Barnes Captain See more

02.01.2022 Malua Bay brigade, with Surf Beach brigade assistance, completed its first hazard reduction burn of this season. A property at the end of Grandfathers Gully Road is now in a much safer fire condition as well as helping to protect the western edge of residents in Lilli Pilli Estate. Thank you everyone for your patience in putting up with the smoke.

02.01.2022 Merry Xmas, and a smokeless New Year!

01.01.2022 Our plan to hazard reduction burn this Friday at Dunns Creek Road has been postponed. The weather is not favourable for open burning - too windy. The next weather window might be available late next week.

01.01.2022 Tonight our Brigade members tested their boat fire fighting skills at the Hanging Rock boat ramp. Marine Rescue kindly lent a "blazing" boat while our three trucks were set up to pump water through all hoses at full capacity. Whilst a boat fire is not a regular incident we would normally encounter, the exercise still tested our skills and equipment in cold conditions and in the dark. Thank you Marine Rescue for providing an element of realism to the scene!

01.01.2022 It's that time of the year again when Santa is itching to ride our fire truck and visit everyone in the Malua Bay Brigade area. He will be touring all streets and roads between Grandfathers Gully, south to Guerilla Bay and west to Dunns Creek Road, beginning 3pm, Xmas Eve. That's next Thursday afternoon! Merry Christmas everyone, and we are confident you will have a better year in 2021!
