25.01.2022 Lest we forget - For those who gave their lives so we could live ours. It's not just human soldiers who fought for their country. Millions of horses and other animals also served during wartime, and one special photo shows just how much their human counterparts appreciated the war horses and their sacrifice. The touching black and white photo is believed to have been taken by officers of the Auxiliary Remount Dept. No.326 in Camp Cody, New Mexico in 1915.... The image shows about 650 soldiers standing in a formation that, from above, resembles a cavalry horse's head, neck, and bridle -- a true tribute from the soldiers to the many horses who fought, and often died, by their side in the Great War. While horses have served in many other wars, the large number of horses killed in WWI was staggering; about eight million horses, and countless mules, and donkeys were lost in the war. The U.S. Army and the British Army both used mounted infantry while Germany stopped sending them to the Western Front early on in the war. The horses suffered terrible conditions, and were killed most often on the front lines by machine gun fire and gas attacks. Horses and their counterparts also helped carry food, water, ammunition, gas masks and medical supplies in supply wagons over long distances and rough terrain to the allied forces on the front lines. www.wideopenpets.com

23.01.2022 Ardrie Park, East Malvern In 1917, Malvern City Council purchased 7 acres of land at the rear of properties facing Repton Road. Malvern's first parks and gardens curator, Thomas Pockett, prepared plans for the park including a gardener's cottage and motor garage and the cottage was built by 1918. In 1918, the park was laid out with a serpentine avenue of 12-year-old elm trees that were removed from Paxton Street. Shrubbery borders were planted and a cricket pitch was propose...d. In 1923, a cyclone fence was erected on both sides of the walkway from Waverley Road to safeguard against stray dogs. A large bed was also formed and planted with spring flowering trees 'which should provide a pleasing feature at a future date'. In 1923, 17 horses and cows were impounded, having been found in Ardrie Park. In the 1930s one of the gardener's jobs was to take bunches of flowers from the garden to each of the Councillor's wives on a Saturday morning. In 1924, Mr. McCleery presented the Malvern City Council with two pairs of gates. One pair was erected at the end of Wilmot Street and the other at the Repton Road entrance. Only the Repton Road gates and fence remain. The Wilmot Street gates may have been relocated to the Ardrie Road entrance. The tennis courts were erected some years after the park was established and the brick pavilion and toilet block erected in the 1970s. In 1982 it was proposed to establish a Day Centre in the old gardener's cottage but this did not eventuate. The cottage was rented out prior to its demolition in 1997. 22.01.2022 Last weekend marked 65 years since the first automatic boom gates were installed at Toorak Road, Tooronga. Before this technology, level crossings were managed by hand-operated gates or interlocking gates controlled from the signal box.
21.01.2022 Flashback Friday... In 1914, the Herald newspaper reported that a new invention was coming to Victoria - petrol bowsers! By the 1930s, the Aussie 'servo' had taken off. Each had its own distinctive appearance and character, and was a one-stop shop where a friendly attendant would not only fill your car with petrol, but could also pump your tyres, wash your windscreen, have a yarn and book you in for a grease and oil.

17.01.2022 A steam bus at Prahran Railway Station in December 1905. Buses were first introduced in Victoria in 1905 when the Railway Department started a service between Prahran and Malvern. There were 6 kerosene-fired steam-powered buses which were imported from England and their maximum speed was 20 miles an hour. Buses were timed to meet all trains arriving at Prahran from Melbourne. This schedule was not maintained owing to continual mechanical faults developing. The service was abandoned in June 1906 as the novelty of motor transport had worn off and its irregularity had made people use the more reliable horse-drawn vehicles. For the 7 months the buses were in service, they carried a monthly average of 56,000 passengers. Stonnington History Centre image 12477
16.01.2022 John Wagner built Stonington Mansion, a 40 room mansion on Glenferrie Road, in 1890 and named it after Stonington, Connecticut, USA, the birthplace of his wife, Mary. From 1901-1931 seven different Governors of Victoria lived at Stonington and it was during this time that the spelling changed to Stonnington. Since the 1930s the mansion has had a number of uses including St Margaret's School, an after care centre for child polio patients, a Red Cross convalescent hospital during WW2, the Health Department Administration Centre, Toorak Teachers' College, the State College of Victoria and Deakin University. 16.01.2022 Kings Arcade, Armadale Kings Arcade was built in 1893 by Frederick Phillips. The original building consisted of three double-storey shops which were connected by a central archway that opened onto the laneway. In 1894 the shops were bought by James Paterson who made minor additions such as baths, laundries and lavatories. Frederick King, a fruiterer, purchased the Arcade around 1921 and over the next three years built further shops along either side of the arcade. He used the... shops at the front for his fruit business and made the arcade into a thoroughfare between Armadale Station and High Street and named it Railway Arcade. In 1946 it was renamed King's Arcade by their son, Gordon. The Arcade still remains in the King family. 08.01.2022 Maryborough Railway Station - What has this got to do with Stonnington, you maybe wondering... Around 1860, Henry A. Cawkwell established a large tile and terracotta works at the north-west corner of Tooronga Road and High Street, Malvern where the clay was ideal for tile making. Cawkwell's mosaic tiles won awards at the 1880 Melbourne Exhibition and were used in various churches, the Victorian Railways head office, Parliament House and the Maryborough Railway Station. The tile works were demolished in the 1920s. Two workers' cottages still stand in Cawkwell Street. Photo in the comments.
