25.01.2022 Malvern Valley Academy Day The Malvern Valley Academy is an initiative that provides an opportunity for every one of our Grade 3-6 students to develop their talents in a range of learning areas, with a particular focus on STEM. Due to COVID-19 our Academy program has not been able to run this year. Instead, our dedicated team of teachers ran an Academy Day today, rotating the students through each of the Academy Focus Topics. Sustainability Academy: Inspired by a clip from ‘W...ar on Waste’ students reused old clothes and created great one-of-a-kind t-shirt bags! Sports Academy: The students worked on their throwing and catching skills in a fun modified game mixing NFL and handball. Engineering Academy: The competition was on to construct the tallest freestanding tower out of paper and masking tape. The winning tower was 163cm tall! Science Academy: Students looked at the importance of predicting, observing and drawing conclusions by measuring how many drops of water would fit on the head of a coin, and observing the changes that happened to candy canes in different liquids. Entrepreneur Academy: Our budding entrepreneurs had to create innovative solutions to a problem and design tower prototypes. Coding/Robotics Academy: Students engaged in an ‘Hour of Code’ game and then coded Dash and Dot robots to perform various actions See more

24.01.2022 1:1 Laptop Program in 2021! From 2021 every student in Grades 3 to 6 will have a laptop allocated to them. This will enable teachers to continue to use many of the innovative platforms that have been so successful throughout remote learning, ensure parents are able to maintain a strong level of engagement in their child’s learning through the use of Google Classroom, and ensure each student continues to be supported in their development of 21st-Century skills.

24.01.2022 Our Robotics Academy students learn to use block code, as well as writing simple code to program robotic equipment (Lego EV3) in our STEM Studio. They design pathways, then program robots (using bricks, motors and sensors) to move along these paths and perform specific tasks. Learning code is a great way to develop knowledge specific to their chosen field of interest, while also fostering the students’ critical and creative thinking skills.

22.01.2022 Focus on Positive Relationships - Empathy Empathy is a crucial skill for building and maintaining Positive Relationships. Students are born with the capacity for empathy, but it needs to be nurtured throughout their lives. Learning empathy is in certain respects like learning a language or a sport. It requires practice and guidance. Regularly considering other people’s perspectives and circumstances help make empathy a natural reflex and, through trial and error, helps children get better at tuning into others’ feelings and perspectives. Our students practice empathy by identifying others’ emotions, actively listening, and recognizing different points of view. https://media.giphy.com/media/2cOb1LiWeYSCQ/giphy.gif

19.01.2022 Spotlight on Specialist Subjects Visual Arts Visual Arts in Term 4 will focus on Printing. Students learn to understand the concepts of repetition, positive and negative space, colour in relation to perspective, layering effects and use of block shapes and lines. Our Preps are creating monsters and funny figures using their fingerprints. The Grade 1/2s are using Kandinsky as their inspiration and are using different mediums to create artworks using block colours and lines.... The focus is on getting then to understand space and begin to feel comfortable with placement and layering on their art. The grade 3/4 classes have talked about symbolism. With Remembrance Day coming up, the classes are reproducing poppy fields using blended colours and ink lines. Their artworks reveal how graduated colour can be used to create perspective. The 5/6s are tackling the concept of positive and negative space. They will be creating their own stencils to lay out a design on fabric pencil cases. See more

13.01.2022 Wondering about the value of a 10 minutes parent teacher interview? After a successful parent teacher interview, parents should have a better understanding of the growth their child has made this year, where they need to further develop their learning, and whether they are generally happy and engaged in class and in the playground. Here’s a few questions to get the most out of your interview.

12.01.2022 MVPS was abuzz today with the giggles and excitement of our 2021 Preps and their families, who were visiting the school as part of the Ready Set Prep transition program. The pre-preps spent time in the classroom undertaking some fun activities with the Prep Teachers, whilst the parents enjoyed a school tour and the opportunity to ask questions and gain an understanding of what a school day will look like for their Prep next year. Our uniform supplier Surrey Clothing was also on-site, giving families a chance to try on and purchase uniforms. We are looking forward to seeing our 2021 Preps smiling faces, under their broad brim hats, on the first day of term next year!

11.01.2022 NAIDOC WEEK 2020 Always Was, Always Will Be Always Was, Always Will Be. recognises that First Nations people have occupied and cared for this continent for over 65,000 years. MVPS acknowledges and fosters respect for our traditional owners and has spent the week exploring, learning about, and gaining an appreciation for the wealth and breadth of Indigenous Nations, languages, knowledge of this continent, and understanding of our environment. MVPS is working towards greater integration of indigenous culture into our school, with a new project hopefully to be announced soon!

08.01.2022 Social Inclusion Week - 21 - 29 November, 2020 Throughout primary school, feeling included in the playground is essential to a student’s self-confidence and the development of their social and emotional well-being. The diversity of MVPS’ playground areas and lunch-time activities caters to the individuality of our student's interests and social interactions. Social inclusion does not mean that children have to play with everyone all of the time, but it does mean they have to know how to make others feel welcome and included in the same shared playing space of the playground. Through MVPS’ wellbeing program, students talk about and are encouraged to act with empathy, work in teams, look for opportunities to help others, and develop positive communication skills that support social acceptance in the playground and throughout their lives.

03.01.2022 The Morning Checklist Fostering independence is an important foundation in developing confidence in our children. Giving them responsibility for small tasks in their daily lives has been proven as a positive step towards independence. So why not start with their morning routine? We all know trying to get kids out the door in the morning can be a struggle and a test of everyone’s patience. Print out this checklist, laminate it and let the kids check it off every morning. They will head out the door with a sense of achievement and parents can follow them out knowing that they are ready for school.

03.01.2022 Remembrance Day 2020 - Together we learn to stand in the shoes of others. 2020 marks the 75th anniversary of the end of the Second World War. A day where heartbreak and joy were felt across the world. But what does it mean for this younger generation who have not known, nor do we ever hope they know, our Nation at war? MVPS teachers encourage respect and empathy for Remembrance Day through discussions about the symbolism of the day, sharing stories that relate to sacrifice and heroism, setting narrative writing tasks that allow the students to explore what life might have been like for soldiers, offering project work to investigate and display an aspect of wartime, and getting the students to share family stories of relatives who went to war or served in the Armed Forced. Together we learn to stand in the shoes of others.

01.01.2022 Our School Values The school’s mission of ‘Creating confident children with choices for the future’ is underpinned by 4 key values: Resilience, Cooperation, Confidence and Respect. Each of these values are entrenched in our teaching and culture. The values promote a growth mindset in our students and empower them to utilise their strengths to be ambitious and empathetic global citizens.
