25.01.2022 You are not oiling the wheels of a machine that’s about to roll over a cliff. You are not restoring a great painting that’s shortly going to be thrown on the fire. You are not planting roses in a garden that’s about to be dug up for a building site. You arestrange as it may seem, almost as hard to believe as the resurrection itselfaccomplishing something that will become in due course part of God’s new world (an extract from one of the linked articles on restoration referred to in this piece) .
23.01.2022 So, who is it that becomes visible to our work colleagues or our customers when we step into the wider world of our work? (Page 89). ...by our renewed attentiv...eness to the Real in others, the Real in us will slowly emerge. And as this happens, we too become visible. Sometimes, somehow, the right words, the appropriate actions and good decisions do become manifest in us. Let’s not underestimate the significance of this calling to render others more visible (and ourselves more vulnerable and more visible in the process). Our work cultures often treat people as faceless cogs and personal engagements as transactions. "I remember a particular incident when I had been standing in a long line at an airport, waiting to order a cup of coffee. When I finally reached the front of the queue I placed my order and thanked the worker serving me. He stopped quite still and said to me: You’ve no idea what it just felt like to be smiled at in the eyes and acknowledged". Jenny Tymms Deep Work (Page 91).

21.01.2022 Some of Australia’s leading thinkers about Faith in the Workplace have contributed to our first newsletter. Kara Martin, John Beckett and Dave Benson have provided great insights into the faith and work conversation and their articles are worth taking a few moments out of your day to read. We have also included some of the participants experiences of our Vocational Hubs, and their articles describe how they have experienced the workplace conversation in a vocational hub and the ways our faith can change this conversation. 18.01.2022 I just came across this quote from Jenny Tymms the author of Deep Work: Spiritual Practice in our Workday World In the context of Deep Work, I have also used the word practice in a particular sense. The practices at the end of each theme are intentional disciplines that foster and nourish our desire for spiritual depth. They cultivate within us that open, receptive disposition that enables us to discern the Presence and Ways of God. They shape us into people who joyfully part...icipate in God’s compassionate and justice-making work in the world. Indeed, they become our experience of meaning and depth. Speaking of this kind of intention, Eric Maisel, a creativity and writing coach, said that practice is: "a way that you take your existence seriously, one breath at a time, one thought at a time, one moment at a time. It is the daily routine of paying attention where you have intentions. It looks like the silence of deep space filled with the fire of a single star. To put it simply: it is spending a significant amount of time every day focused in one direction". I wonder how well we do this one discipline? Being focussed in the one direction for a significant period of time isn't something we are particularly good at in our modern world.
15.01.2022 A great article from Kara Martin.

13.01.2022 We are not Ok - We are not getting happier - From the World Happiness Report Just in case we thought we could fix things ourselves the happiness report shows that it's not working. Even though things are getting better we are not finding happiness. "In addition, numerous indicators of low psychological well-being such as depression, suicidal ideation, and self-harm increased sharply among adolescents since 2010, particularly among girls and young women (Mercado et al., 2017;... Mojtabai et al., 2016; Plemmons et al., 2018; Twenge et al., 2018b, 2019a). Depression and self-harm also increased over this time period among children and adolescents in the UK (Morgan et al., 2017; NHS, 2018; Patalay & Gage, 2019). Thus, those in iGen (born after 1995) are markedly lower in psychological well-being than Millennials (born 1980-1994) were at the same age (Twenge, 2017). This decline in happiness and mental health seems paradoxical. By most accounts, Americans should be happier now than ever. The violent crime rate is low, as is the unemployment rate. Income per capita has steadily grown over the last few decades. This is the Easterlin paradox: As the standard of living improves, so should happiness but it has not." Oh and as I read on Social media isn't helping either. http://worldhappiness.report/ed/2019/
12.01.2022 Crucial framework here from Dave Benson for what we do during the week. If the church scattered gets this, our world will change- the very way it was always meant to be changed!
11.01.2022 ...For the last 50 years, the conversation about faith and learning has often been about what faith has to do with the content of education, with the ideas that get transmitted. But there’s been much less conversation about how faith affects how we teach -- which is strange, because formation comes as much out of how we’re taught as out of what ideas are put in front of us....

05.01.2022 Hi all it's been a while since I've posted but we have a great event coming up with Kara Martin coming to Highfields near Toowoomba. This would be worth a trip up the range for the day to discuss faith and work.
05.01.2022 This is coming up this Sunday if you are around the Toowoomba area and would like to join the conversation.
04.01.2022 Lisa Sharon Harper, in her book 'The Very Good Gospel' says church historians have identified 4 characteristics common to American Evangelicals during the birthing period of the movt in the 1800's: 1. Conversionism; 2. Activism, citing Charles Finney signing up new believer to the abolition of slavery movt; ... 3. Biblicism, ie Bible is the ultimate authority; and 4.Crucicentrism, ie that central to our faith is that on the cross Jesus became sin itself to transform us & the world. Lisa notes that with the industrial revolution, a 'civil war' broke out among white evangelicals: half the white church in the US focused on individual salvation (ignoring activism and structural evil) while the other half focused on activism and structural evil. Lisa calls us to come back to our roots and embrace all four characteristics of evangelicalism again. Let's do it! It's a very good gospel!
04.01.2022 This should be a great discussion.
