23.01.2022 Postcards from the Pandemic: #3 Last flight out of Hanoi Joshua Salisbury-Carter is an artist, furniture designer and stage builder. His work is held in the MAMA Collection and he has created a number of public art pieces around Albury Wodonga. For the past 4 years he has been living in South East Asia, building stages, art installations, and playing music. Josh flew home to Wodonga on the last flight out of Hanoi, this is his story: 'Three years ago, I started an arts & musi...c festival in Thailand called Jai Thep. It was held again at the end of January this year, just as the impacts of COVID were beginning to be felt. I had been planning to continue working with Hanoi based music promoters to build stages and environments for their events during 2020, however, things began to shift rapidly in February. My fiancé, Chelsea, and I were living in Hanoi when the pandemic really started to hit hard. Her work closed down at the start of February and she had to travel to the USA for what we thought would only be a month or so. I stayed in Hanoi to finish up some building projects but everything started closing up and shutting down. In July I was supposed to be flying to America to get married. We had everything booked and ready to go but unfortunately that has all been postponed. I decided at the last minute to leave Hanoi when the Aussie PM said, If you are planning on coming back, come back now. I had two flight bookings fall through and started to get worried that I had missed my chance. I finally managed to book a flight that was leaving in 48 hours. I packed up and tried to finalise my on going projects as quickly as I could. I had to leave my tools, guitar, scooter and continue renting my apartment. I only just managed to get everything into storage in Vietnam last week over Skype. Since returning to Australia I have been very lucky finding creative work. I started working at a furniture design company in Melbourne, for a research project at Swinburne University and on some exciting furniture and art installations for Wodonga Council. It is all very bittersweet because I am separated from my fiancé. Coming back to Australia during lockdown has been a very strange experience. I remember Melbourne for its live music and great events but I haven’t been able to experience any of that yet. I have appreciated the time that I’ve had with my parents in Wodonga. The hardest part is not knowing when Chelsea and I will be in the same country. It feels very difficult at the moment to predict when things like international travel will start again for Australians.' Thanks for sharing your story with us Josh! If you are an arts worker from the region that has a story to share, please get in touch via DM.

19.01.2022 Susie Losch's new work 'Waves (spilling plunging collapsing surging)', was inspired by concrete tetrapods that are used to protect the coastlines from environmental degradation in South Korea. 'I have chosen to fill [the tetrapods] with air, moving in and out of each sculpture’s walls. They become much lighter objects and have also been made with only recycled and reused inflatable fabrics. As they move against each other, inflating and deflating, they behave like the waves ...that break upon tetrapods on coastlines around the globe. They become the storm surge.' Join us live in the museum this Thursday for a conversation with Susie about her art practice, the development of this work, in an evening event hosted by our Members. Thursday 12 November, 6.00pm - 7.00pm Limited places, book your free ticket online. http://ow.ly/M5oU50Cg8sJ
18.01.2022 New research from the Australia Council for the Arts shows a growing number of Australians value the arts for its role in building social cohesion, personal happiness, overcoming stress and anxiety and driving economic growth. "The idea that we are soaking in [arts] is becoming more apparent to people that we are not talking about a pastime but something intrinsic to the lives of all Australians." ~Dr Sarah Austin via The Sydney Morning Herald

10.01.2022 Happy fifth birthday to us!! Lovely visit today with Audray Banfield, previous Director of 25 years, onsite to see our live conservation event with Emily Mulvihill. Audray inaugurated the National Photography Prize, commissioned many important works in our collection including Tracey Moffatt’s ‘Something More’. A fierce, strong woman that led the way through the 80’s, 90’s, and 00’s, creating the foundations our museum is built on. ... As we reach our 5 year milestone, we reflect on the artists, leaders, donors and community that have enabled us to be here. Thank you for the support, and enabling us to work with the artists we do. It is our collective privilege. When you speak with elders of the art world like Audray, and feel that passion for art, and joy in the weird still alive...it inspires us to keep reaching, keep moving, keep adapting. Maybe even make it to 25 years like Audray. Here’s to the next 5 ! http://ow.ly/IGaV30rcTXt

03.01.2022 Join us this Saturday for an in-depth conversation with artist Tiyan Baker as she delves into the online hoax that influenced her video work ‘A Game About Fear’ in our current exhibition 20:20. Social media has become an important platform for supporting and organising activism, which was exemplified during Black Lives Matter protests across the globe this year. However, with freely available information being shared online how can we tell what is real and important anymo...re? Tiyan Baker will explore this question in relation to the viral hoax #DCBlackout that resulted in misinformation being shared tens of millions of times on Twitter. She will highlight how this specific event, along with cyber espionage more broadly, played a key role in the context and development of her work. Saturday 21 November 11.00am - 12.00pm FREE Follow @___titan_baker___ to learn more about the artist. #tiyanbaker #agameaboutfear #contemporaryart #2020 #machinelearning #twitterhoax #newcommission #videoart #textbasedart #australianart #australianartist #sydneyartist #thingstodoinalbury #alburywodonga #artisttalk #museumevent #visitaw #thisistheborder #artevents #newsouthwales @visitaw #weekend #covidsafe

02.01.2022 New to the MAMA permanent collection! Hany Armanious & Patrick Hartigan. Our Curator, Michael Moran describes the work: ‘Hany Armanious is a magician of an artist. Transformations, illusions and sleight of hand are hallmarks of his work. In ‘Figure Eight’, Armanious presents two tools used in manufacturing, a blacksmith’s anvil and a tailor’s iron, both forged in unusual ways and materials. ‘The anvil appears as polystyrene but is actually poured resin, while the iron is cas...t in pewter. ‘Alongside Patrick Hartigan’s ‘Tool and Muse’, it forms a corner of COLLECTION that is an ode to artists’ making a moment when two artists bring the magic of the studio into the gallery.’ MAMA is open all weekend and is free to visit! Our current exhibition, COLLECTION, continues to 12 October. https://www.mamalbury.com.au/see-and-do
01.01.2022 Luke Parker, ‘Things fall apart (Yeats)’, neon version (2020) & Double 'Double Pulse' (2002/2020), MAMA installation view. A new commission for 20:20. Luke:... ‘Things fall apart is a fragment of a poem by the Irish early-modernist poet, WB Yeats. Rendered in neon, the text becomes a sign, a reminder of our inherent fragility, and the temporal nature of the existence of all things. Accompanying this text work are two ‘drawings’, made almost 20 years apart and identical, except for the obvious effect of time on the older version. The works are made onto posters, released as a limited edition inserted in a book, by the Cuban/American artist Felix Gonzales-Torres. The posters feature a black and white image of two birds in flight against a grey sky. My intervention onto them was made by stitching metallic thread through the paper, a series of expanding circles that evoke ripples, soundwaves, or targets. In these works, recurrences, change and impermanence are all represented.’ Follow the artist @lookparcar Photo @j.wyro See more
