25.01.2022 MY TOP LUNCHBOX TIPS . Keep it varied and colourful. The key to a healthy gut is food variation. Lots of different healthy foods! If you can, try to include all the food groups in your lunchbox : Veg, Fruit, WholeGrains, Protein, Calcium. Plus good fats. Entice them with colourful food! With so many functional lunchboxes these days we are spoilt for choice.... Make it bite sized and simple Who wants to eat lunch when theres playing to be done!? Many times a parent will tell me their child brings most of their lunchbox home as theyre too busy playing to eat. Of course this means they are starving after school and they become tired irritated and upset. Packing a lunchbox that has small portion sizes and easy to grab food means less time for eating and more time for playing. Add Protein to the lunchbox. Protein can prevent the surges in blood sugar that increase hyperactivity and impulsivity. It also helps with that post-lunch fatigue many kids will get when they go back to class. Less highs and lows throughout the day and more balance. In these lunchboxes weve included plant-based proteins - * Peas & Beans * Hummus ( chickpea) dip / Cheese * Sesame seeds in the wraps. Be Earth Smart Help our kids to be waste wise conscious by packing a lunchbox free of rubbish, soft plastic or single use items. Bento Lunchboxes, re-usable containers and beeswax wraps are way too awesome not to use. It also encourages less processed foods and more wholesome foods. Their generation and Mother Earth will Thankyou! . Whats in our lunchbox : Fruit. Veggie sticks. Salad wrap in mountain bread. Charcoal crackers and Hummus/cheese. Home baked Chocolate brownie. . What other tips have you found helpful?

23.01.2022 HISTAMINES Our bodies naturally produce histamines and so do many foods. However in some people, due to an inability to break down the chemical, histamines can build up in the body and create a few problems. Processes of immunity, inflammation and the gut can be disturbed with symptoms including cramping, gas, altered bowel movements, mucous production and enhanced gastric acid .. much like symptoms of IBS. Histamine ‘intolerance’ can also produce ‘allergy like’ symptoms suc...h as skin redness, runny or blocked nose, asthma, hives, dermatitis, headaches, reflux, vomiting and abdominal pain. So what type of foods can release histamines * Cheese * Processed meat * Fermented foods * Some Vegetables - spinach, eggplant, avocado, beans, tomatoes * Yeast * Condiments * Alcohol * Citrus fruit * Dried fruit * Papaya * Strawberries * Pineapple * Bananas * Nuts * Peanuts * Fish/Crustaceans * Pork * Egg whites As this list includes many different foods it is recommended that if you suspect a histamine intolerance you work with a practitioner and undertake guidance for treatment options.

15.01.2022 Let’s Talk Gut : Microbiome When looking into a Microbiome test ( stool sample ) we do more than investigate the types of bacteria and parasites present in your bowel. In these particular tests I’m looking at immune dysfunction, digestive function and intestinal hyperpermiability AS well as the bacteria and parasites present. ... Both of these clients presented with bloating, irregular bowel movements, fatigue and an ‘unwell’ feeling. Different diagnostics leads to different treatment plans.. there is no ‘one size fits all’ approach with Nutritional and Naturopathic treatments. A little look into diagnostics... SIgA: represents the first line immune defense of the gut. Elevated levels are associated with an upregulated immune response. sIgA ‘tags' food as acceptable, so low sIgA can lead to increased sensitivity to food. Several studies link stress and emotionality with levels of sIgA. Production is adversely affected by stress, which is mediated by cortisol levels. Hence sIgA levels may be associated with sub optimal adrenal output. ELEVATED STEATOCRIT: The presence of steatocrit is an indirect indicator of incomplete fat digestion Zonulin: Zonulin release can be "overstimulated" by certain external factors to cause opening of tight junctions of the gut wall leading to intestinal hyperpermeability or "leaky gut".

13.01.2022 Bloating occurs when gas becomes trapped in the intestines. It can also be quite painful when it doesn’t move well through the digestive system. So what can cause that belly bloat? Digestion - Eating in a hurry and swallowing more air than usual. Fast eating can also have a negative effect on the way our enzymes digest food. ... Stress - High stress can affect the gut:brain connection. This is because the bodies attention has now been redirected to put all its energy into the nervous system. Food and food intolerances - High amounts of carbohydrates including lactose, fructose and gluten tend to be the biggest culprits with absorption. However sensitivities to salicylates, food additives such as MSG, caffeine and alcohol can cause problems too. If the small intestines isn’t breaking down foods properly they move undigested into the colon. Here they are broken down and fermented by bacteria which lets off gases. Constipation - The slow movement of food through the gut causes fermentation and extra gas by bacteria Hormones - fluctuations in hormones can cause changes to gut muscle function, transit time, create sensitivity and water retention. Illness and gut related conditions - including Irritable bowel, Crohns, ulcerative colitis, celiacs, SIBO and diverticulitis. An imbalance of good and bad bacteria in the gut. To combat bloating it’s important to identify your potential triggers and work on an individualised treatment plan including dietary changes, lifestyle modifications as well as beneficial supplements/herbs. As always, I recommend investing in a professional to assist you.

13.01.2022 What do you see?

13.01.2022 Once our little ones start to use the toilet by themselves its hard to track whats happening inside their guts - If sore tummies, smelly poops, windy bottoms, poop or wee accidents, behavioural issues, skid marks, UTIs and bed-wetting are a common theme in your household, you may want to start keeping track of their toilet habits as constipation may be the underlying cause.

Iodine is found in kelp, seaweed and seafood. . Selenium can be found in Brazil nuts, eggs, shellfish, animal proteins. . 12.01.2022 Lets talk IRON for women. Symptoms of Low iron can include: - Fatigue... - Poor concentration - Headaches - Dizziness - Shortness of breath - Dry skin and hair - Restless leg - Pale complexion - Heart palpitations - Low immune system . The top causes of iron deficiency include: * Inadequate iron intake in diet * under active thyroid * poor absorption in the gut : IBD / IBS / celiac / gluten intolerance * Low facilitation vitamins : B12, Folate, Zinc. * heavy periods * medications * increased requirements during pregnancy. Your GP may run some tests to check your iron levels, Haemoglobin and red bloods cells. There are usually a few different results to interpret. Ferritin is your stored iron and the reference range is between 30 - 200ng/mL. Bare in mind that if your results come back and theyre sitting just above 30... lets say 32ng/mL , this still might not be optimal iron storage for You Addressing underlying issues, making dietary changes and choosing a good quality iron supplement are important steps to rectify your iron levels.

You can also Get gut friendly and add a side of kraut! . Keep life colourful

10.01.2022 Lets talk eczema and the gut Various environmental factors, such as stress, diet, and pollutants seem to affect the gut Microbiome in those with eczema, particularly in early life. Alterations to the gut can be caused by toxins, food intolerances, nutrient deficiencies, altered detoxification pathways, immune dysfunction, and stress. ... An imbalanced gut can cause an inflamed microenvironment. This imbalance can produce Tryptophan which causes an itching sensation in the skin, and an overload of the bacterial species Escherichia and Enterococcus produces serotonin, which is involved in skin pigmentation. Cortisol, usually released under stress conditions, can also change gut permeability and barrier function influencing the skin barrier and inflammation. In people with Atopic dermatitis ( eczema), the bacterias of Clostridia, Clostridium difficile, Escherichia coli, and Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) are higher, and Bifidobacteria is decreased. Flares seem to be characterized by an increased abundance of pathogenic S. aureus, which may need to be controlled externally as well as internally - on the skin and in the gut. Changes in diet, recognising food intolerances, assisting detoxification pathways, enhancing the immune system as well as lifestyle changes are all part of a treatment protocol. Additionally probiotic Lactobacillus species and Bifidobacterium species can produce -aminobutyric acid (GABA), which inhibits skin itch. #eczema #atopicdermatitis #nutrition #gutmicrobiome

10.01.2022 Do you School Snack Prep? Heres 4 reasons why I put aside a couple of hours a fortnight to bake and freeze : 1. Beneficial for growing bodies : Baking from scratch cuts out many of the chemicals, additives, colourings, artificial flavourings, rancid oils, and high fructose corn syrups in supermarket snacks. ... 2. Reduces stress : Pre-planning means less dashes to the supermarket for lunchbox fillers. 3. More for your money $$: Prep in bulk to save money 4. Good for the environment : Each supermarket snack comes individually wrapped in single use plastic. Which ultimately ends up in landfill. We trialled some gluten-free flour biscuits this week which turned out rather yummy! Pictured is also banana cho chip muffins and pumpkin scones. I used : 1/4 cup coconut oil 1/4 cup coconut cream 1/2 cup raw sugar Dash of vanilla and salt 1 and 1/3 cup gluten-free flour ( @ardorglutenfree ) Choc chips Roll into little balls, press down onto tray and bake for approx. 15 minutes on 160 degrees or until slightly brown. Pop your fav homemade school snack below - I would love to see them!

10.01.2022 PROBIOTICS are big in the Gut Game. And for good reason! However to be honest they are not all created equal.. As a health practitioner who specialises in Gut Health, probiotics are not always my first point of call. If you have an overload of bad bacteria, fungis and pathogens crowding the Gut Microbiome, pouring a whole load of good bacteria ontop of these opportunistic bad guys will not do you a whole load of good. In fact these good guys youve just poured on top coul...d make these bad guys turn nasty pretty quickly The good guys also need to be well fed with prebiotics. So if your diet is not optimal, you have no idea what prebiotics are and you have unknown food intolerances or allergies disrupting the Microbiome, it is worth doing a little research or talking to a practitioner who is knowledgeable in this department.. Keep in mind that each probiotic strain will assist the body in different ways. IBS, Constipation, Colic, skin health , allergies, nutrient absorption, Immunity.. You need to make sure you have the RIGHT strain for YOU. Choosing an over the counter product with the highest CFU count is not always the best option.

02.01.2022 BONE BROTH Bone broth contains collagen, glutamine, glucosamine, chrondition, gelatine, and many other beneficial minerals that are missing from today's modern diets. The most important values from bone broth can include its gut health benefits. Many of the nutrients above assist in strengthening the gastrointestinal system. ... Over 70% of the immune system is found in the gut. The gastrointestinal system also plays a big part in brain health as the gut and the brain are intimately connected. A broth is simple to make - The butcher cut this bone from fresh. I then popped them in the slow cooker, heaped in a whole lot of veggies that were sitting in the fridge and will top it with water until it's just covered leaving to simmer for around 8-12 hours. when it is ready I will strain the liquid and freeze it in jars and use it as I would a stock in sauces, soups and stews. Bone broth is not for everyone as some people can experience a histamine response if there gut health is already compromised. If you are concerned seek assistance from a nutritionist or dietician.
