24.01.2022 Dazed and confused he woke after midnight on April 22 and walked into the hallway on the ninth floor and urinated. He then took the emergency exit stairs to the eighth floor, triggering a fire hydrant and flooding rooms on all seven floors beneath. The court heard how guests had to be evacuated and relocated to neighbouring hotels. On Tuesday, Gaffney pleaded guilty to one charge of criminal damage and fined $10,000 for his drunken acts. 'This entire thing has ruined my life ...completely,' Gaffney told Fairfax Media. 'I’ve spent 10 years in Australia trying to better myself and in the space of one night everything can be taken away from you.' He said who people imbibe to excessive levels, run the risk of ruining their livelihoods. He said he had no memory of the event when asked by Chief Judge Michael Rozenes why he did it despite telling police he was 'so, so sorry for what he'd done. In fining Gaffney, Judge Rozenes took into account his level of intoxication. He said despite the severe consequences of his actions, he had no malicious intent to cause damage and said it was a stupid act that any reasonable sober person would not commit. Born into a strict Catholic family in County Roscommon, Ireland, Gaffney is the youngest of six children. He completed a carpentry apprenticeship and moved to Queensland where he works for the construction company McNab. His defence lawyer Sam Norton said the Irishman had since broken up with his girlfriend who he had planned to ask to marry him during the "ill-fated trip" to Melbourne. He had been living a normal, ordinary life before this extraordinary turn of events, Mr Norton said Read more: http://www.dailymail.co.uk//Oh-Crikey-Drunk-Irishman-says- Follow us: @MailOnline on Twitter | DailyMail on Facebook
19.01.2022 In the wake of all of our WiFi news from last week, we've got some great news from the land Down Under, where getting free WiFi or even cheap WiFi is never easy. In fact, it's almost impossible. But not anymore. Starting this week, Amalgamated Holdings Limited will be offering guests at all their hotels complimentary WiFi to browse the web, check email and Instagram the cool rooms (or so the hotel group hopes.) If the AHL name is a little too vague, you might know some of the... hotel brand names like QT Hotels, Atura Hotels, Rydges and Art Series Hotels. So this means sharing your cool elevator ride or your après-ski hot tub pic will be a little easier, not to mention cheaper. Take it from us, WiFi doesn't come cheap at hotels in Oz. We've been offered up some connectivity if we forked over anywhere from $15 to $29.90 per day. Yes, we said per day! Now, you see why this is such a big deal for an entire portfolio of over 40 hotels to ante up some WiFi as part of the nightly rate. Let this be a little message to other hotels, just do it already! Offering this service can't be that hard, can it?
17.01.2022 An Irishman who pleaded guilty earlier this week to causing almost 340,000 worth of damage to an Australian hotel has been found dead. Padraig Gaffney, from Lanesborough in Co Longford, was fined A$10,000 (6,800) in a Melbourne court on Tuesday over the incident in April 2013 at the Fraser Place Hotel, where he had been staying with his girlfriend. The court was told that he woke up in his hotel room after a night out. He went out of the room and down an emergency exit to t...he eighth floor, where he set off a fire hydrant. The water flooded the floors below and guests had to be evacuated. The damage amounted to more than A$500,000. The Age newspaper quoted the judge in the case as saying Mr Gaffney had been heavily intoxicated, but there was no malicious intent to cause damage to the hotel, and it was just a stupid act that he would never have contemplated had he been sober. Nonetheless, after his court appearance, Mr Gaffney told Australian media: This entire thing has ruined my life completely. I’ve spent 10 years in Australia trying to better myself and in the space of one night everything can be taken away from you. People who go out for the night and drink too much can ruin themselves completely. On Wednesday, just a day after the court appearance, he was found dead. Details on how he died have not yet emerged. The Department of Foreign Affairs is providing consular assistance to Mr Gaffney’s family

01.01.2022 Janine Allis gets up at five o’clock every morning and drives to the centre of Melbourne for her ashtanga yoga class. Her New Year’s resolution for 2014 was to practise yoga six days a week and so far she is keeping that promise and reaping the rewards. I have my coffee on my way and my juice when I leave and I find that if I don’t do it, the day just falls apart, says Allis, who is 24th on the 2014 BRW Rich Women list. It’s not just exercise, it’s a holistic lifestyle cho...Continue reading
