01.01.2022 37 weeks pregnant. I was 28 years old. We had four wild (untamed!) sons, two of them undiagnosed/untreated at the time for their ADHD. I was feeling like a failure as a mum, like I didn’t deserve this miracle baby who was coming to me anyway. Every time I headed out in public people would say What? Four boys? You don’t look old enough to even be a mum. You’ve got your hands full! Do you guys have a tv? Bet you’re hoping this one’s a girl! Every time I was told I didn’...t look old enough to be a mother, or that I looked like I had my hands full, I took it as judgement that I wasn’t doing my job well. I think they were meant as compliments, or misguided but neutral statements that weren’t intended to be cruel. But hearing them daily did have a deep impact on my self-talk. It was a constant reminder of my own criticism of myself. I have turned that around now. It helps that the last six years have given me some well earned grey hairs and wrinkles. Finally I am free of that comment that I look too young! If you are feeling like you are failing as a mum, maybe try the following affirmations. You could stick them around the house in little nooks where you will see them all the time. My children love and forgive me infinitely. (Use with Bergamot) I am perfectly supported.
