24.01.2022 From Terrain NRM January 28, 2020 : Rainforest people help improve water quality Mamu and Gulgnay people are helping to monitor water quality in their country through the Wet Tropics Major Integrated Project. Five indigenous water quality samplers have joined the project team to help collect samples from waterways and piezometers in the Tully and Johnstone catchments.... The community-designed project is trialling different methods to improve water quality in farming hotspots, and ultimately the Great Barrier Reef. Local scale water quality monitoring and treatment systems are important parts of this multi-faceted project, which works closely with landholders to monitor and evaluate water quality flowing from agricultural land into water catchments. The new staff have undertaken training with water quality scientists from the Queensland Governments Department of Environment and Science, and theyve gained specialised skills. Shai Ivey has been working on the project for over a year. Hes found the job rewarding and enjoys being out in the field. Every day is different. Ive learnt new skills and enjoy working with lots of different people - from scientists to project staff, he said. Its good to be part of a team and a project thats helping Country. Gulgnay elder Clarence Kinjun has been involved in the project since it began, and his input was invaluable during Walking the Landscape workshops in the projects design phase. Clarence now helps with piezometer water quality sampling at demonstration sites. He also maintains several of the projects in-situ water monitoring stations and flumes. He featured in a television commercial about the project last year, and he believes getting the word out is an important part of caring for country. What happens on the land affects the ocean, he said. It shouldnt rest on one individual, its up to all of us to look after country and land. Clarence and Mamu elder Alf Joyce have also helped with cultural heritage assessments of catchment repair sites and were on the scene during wetlands construction. With the wet season approaching, Water Quality Leader Alicia Buckle is thankful for the extra help and knowledge that the new staff will bring to the Wet Tropics Integrated Project. This project relies heavily on people monitoring in the field, she said. Our new team members will be a huge help for data collection, which is a fundamental element. The Wet Tropics Major Integrated Project is funded by the Queensland Government through the Queensland Reef Water Quality Program. The project also includes the construction of water treatment systems ranging from bioreactors and high-efficiency sediment basins to wetlands. 23.01.2022 Cowley and Kurramine Beaches, Mamu Country Nothing seems to be working: Call for temporary beach closures to allow turtles to nest in peace. / Wildlife carers have called for Far Northern beaches to be temporarily closed to quad bikes during summer months to allow sea turtles to nest in peace. Daniel Bateman, The Cairns Post... January 1, 2020 6:00am WILDLIFE carers have called for Far Northern beaches to be temporarily closed to quad bikes during summer months to allow sea turtles to nest in peace. Mission Beach Wild Care has received multiple reports of quad and trail bike users ignoring signage and riding on beaches along the Cassowary Coast. The groups owner, Steve McGuinness, said one of the worst-affected areas was Cowley Beach, north of Tully, where tracks regularly crisscrossed the sand where turtles laid their eggs. He said the riders were blatantly ignoring laws, which were enforceable by either Cassowary Coast Regional Council or police. Should quad bikes be banned from beaches during turtle nesting season? Everyones trying to do something about it, but nothing seems to be working, he said. Whats the point having these signs up, but no-one is enforcing the matter? He suggested the beaches like Cowley which are prime habitat for nesting turtles be closed to bikers during nesting season, from November to the end of February. It would work a bit like the fisheries closures we have up here, he said. It would be the same for the turtles. Cassowary Coast Deputy Mayor Wayne Kimberley said Cowley and Kurrimine beaches had long been a battleground between the council and holiday-makers about illegal biking activities for about a decade. Its very hard because we have a lot of people from out of town who go along on the belief that theyre allowed to ride quad bikes on the beach, he said. Theyre not. Unfortunately, it is hard to police, because at this time of the year, our staff are all on holidays. Cassowary Coast Deputy Mayor Wayne Kimberley said bikers and council often clashed. He said the council was investigating other ways of preventing illegal biking activities at the beaches, including new management plans for foreshore areas. Maybe we can look at strengthening our (local) laws, he said. The Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority has urged beach users to take special care during the summer months as marine turtles begin their age-old ritual of coming ashore to lay eggs. Six of the worlds seven species of marine turtle are found on the Reef, with the authority saying protecting the reptiles nests helps give baby turtles a better chance of survival. 21.01.2022 Congratulations and thanks to all involved with the Innisfail and District Historical Society for looking after the stories across Mamu Country. It would be interesting to see how much is held which helps share the stories of the Aboriginal people living from Kurramine Beach through to Coopers Point and up to Misty Mountains and the Tablelands. Must visit to see. The museum has been like a second life to me because my first life was coming here to Australia, getting involved in the museum through family history and then finding out about the history of Innisfail, she said. And one thing I must say, for a Kiwi to be the called the historian of the town is amusing to me. 19.01.2022 Congratulations to the Mamu Health Service - and very best wishes in their important health and wellbeing work. Through the health service's name, it honours the local Mamu traditional custodians of where its main office is located. FYI the traditional custodians' main legal entity is the Mamu Aboriginal Corporation RNTBC, which, since March, has a new board of directors. The 5 member board with 5 reserves works with the traditional custodians across the registered family groups from Coopers' Point to Kurramine Beach and inland to the Misty Mountains and this side of Tarzali. The Mamu RNTBC can be contacted through the email [email protected] ....

18.01.2022 Hearing about 80% of the Blue Mountains and 50% of the Gondwana world heritage areas being burnt and thinking about the drying of our rainforest Country world heritage area here including the 80% of Mamu Country leads to feeling so much for Country. The following is so worth sharing ..... Deakin University (Melbourne, Victoria) responds to pain of Aboriginal people from the mass destruction of Country. Message: Dear Deakin staff,... You may have noticed that we have lowered our Aboriginal flags and they now fly at half-mast. We did this at the request of the Institute of Koorie Education who advised that it is an articulation of mourning for the loss and destruction of Country during this terrible time, an appropriate acknowledgement of the depth of wounding and a mark of greatest respect. Associate Professor Gabrielle Fletcher, Director of the Institute of Koorie Education wrote the following words for which I thank her: Please know that Country moves beyond landscape, allotment, vista or wildlife as discrete components. It is also place, Ancestors, shadows, mist, warble, maps, vapour. It is Knowledge, Ways, Forms, Spirit, Healing a fluid fixity that is a web of inter-connection that assembles, then re-assembles. A complex system of systems, where everything has its place to teach, feel, show, speak. To lose Country, in this way, is a distinct, messy kind of grief. It is not just a loss of connection to these systems and to place, and so an ever-increasing slippage of understanding of who we are and how we fit. It is not just the loss of sentient, sapient Beings, and the torture of captive incineration when there is nowhere else. It is also a grief of guilt in our irresponsible helplessness - our sense of the abandonment of our cultural obligations to Care for Country. Without Country we are ungrounded and un-belonging. Without Country we are nothing. And without us, Country cannot Be. On behalf of the Institute of Koorie Education, I thank Deakin sincerely for this support, and suggest that these lowered symbolic fabrics become the message sticks for urgent change.
15.01.2022 The 1918 Spanish Flu had a massive effect on Aboriginal people in FNQ, including Mamu Country coastal and tablelands Aboriginal families. "..... The poor and disadvantaged especially Aboriginal communities who had always been hit disproportionately by European-introduced illness were impacted the hardest. For example, at the Barambah government Aboriginal reserve (Cherbourg, Queensland) 590 Indigenous people contracted the illness and 90 of them died within three weeks........" "As in other 20th-century epidemics and pandemics, such as HIV/Aids, Africans and Asians suffered proportionately more than Europeans and north Americans. Thus, while the average case mortality in the developed world was about 2%, in India, where 18.5 million perished, it was 6%, and in Egypt, where 138,000 died, it was 10%. In isolated regions with virgin populations with no immunity to flu, the impact was truly astonishing in Western Samoa, for example, a quarter of the population was wiped out. By contrast, American Samoa recorded no casualties." See more

14.01.2022 Mamu Mandubarra Country, Cowley Beach Really!? Outrageous if true. CAIRNS Tensions between quad bikers and wildlife carers at a Far Northern beach are growing, with claims a sea turtle nest has been set alight.... Daniel Bateman, The Cairns Post January 11, 2020 5:30am A WAR between quad bike riders and wildlife carers has reached boiling point within a Far Northern coastal community after a sea turtle nest appeared to have been set alight on the beach. Conservationist Russell Constable discovered a nest that has had palm fronds stacked on top of it, then set on fire, at Cowley Beach earlier this week. It comes as tensions rise between local quad bike riders, Cassowary Coast Regional Council and wildlife carers about illegal vehicle activity on the beach. Sea turtle nest at Cowley Beach that appears to have had palm fronds stacked on top of it, then set alight. Photo: Russell Constable Mr Constable, who has been monitoring turtles at the beach for several years, was disgusted to find the burned nest. Im not satisfied that it was a genuine attempt, but rather a warning from the locals, he said. Quad biking is outlawed at Cowley Beach, with signs warning against the activity. The council has suggested it may be able to strengthen its local laws to stop riders at the beach. Cowley Beach resident Mike Roots did not believe locals were the cause of the illegal quad bike activity at the beach. It would be the holidayers and the weekenders coming down (with bikes), thats whos causing this, he said. He said many locals protected the nests along the beach as part of an informal local conservation group. To report any illegal activity impacting sea turtles, contact RSPCA Queensland on 1300 ANIMAL (1300 264 625) at any time. Originally published as War over illegal quad bikes revs up

11.01.2022 Cairns beaches (but mentions Mamu Country Kurramine and Cowley Beaches): Experts calls for more patrols to protect sea turtles An expert has suggested the region follow in the footsteps of a US state to help protect sea turtle nests from illegal beach activities like quad biking riding. Daniel Bateman, The Cairns Post... January 8, 2020 6:00am A TURTLE expert has called for more patrols of Far Northern beaches to prevent quad bike riders from destroying sea turtle nests. Quad and trail bike riders have been causing grief for wildlife carers at several local beaches during the holiday period by riding illegally in areas that are prime habitat for nesting sea turtles. Three of the worst affected beaches are Cowley and Kurrimine on the Cassowary Coast and Bramston, south of Cairns. Jennie Gilbert from the Cairns Turtle Rehabilitation Centre with a Flatback turtle . Jennie is the star of a film touring with the Ocean Film Festival World Tour PICTURE: ANNA ROGERS Bike riding is prohibited at most of these beaches. Cairns Turtle Rehabilitation Centre co-ordinator Jennie Gilbert said authorities needed to do more to protect turtle nests, whether it was stepping up patrols or blocking off nesting areas. The impaction of sand makes it difficult for little hatchlings to get out, she said. And there are signs up saying this is turtle nesting area, but for some people, they just dont care. Its horrendous. Ms Gilbert said in Florida, wildlife authorities relied upon volunteers to stay guard over turtle nests night and day. Sea turtle nest disturbed by quad bikers at Bramston Beach. Photo: Russell Constable She suggested a similar program in the Far North. One in 1000 turtles makes it through to adulthood, she said. Every hatchling makes a difference. A Cairns Regional Council spokeswoman said five years ago warning signs and barriers were installed to prevent vehicles from accessing Bramston Beach between the caravan park and boat ramp on Evans Rd. These steps have been successful, with no recent complaints of illegal vehicle access, she said. Residents concerned about quad bike activity should contact local police or the Department of Natural Resources, Mining and Energy. Cassowary Coast Regional Council has suggested it may look at strengthening local laws to stop illegal quad biking. Do you think volunteers guarding turtle nests would work in FNQ? https://www.dailytelegraph.com.au//4c545e623729c19439a0c3d
