21.01.2022 ‘Good babies’ often only settle for their mothers. ‘Good babies’ wake frequently. ‘Good babies’ feed to sleep. ‘Good babies’ wake and cry when put down. ‘Good b...abies’ want to breastfeed frequently. ‘Good babies’ want to be mostly held. ‘Good babies’ refuse dummies or bottles. All babies are ‘good babies’. It’s normal for them to need us, and some babies need us more intensely. They’re not bad babies. They don’t need training. They don’t need tough love. They don’t need rule books. They need us. And we need others to care for us, while we do this caring #infantmentalhealthawarenessweek

13.01.2022 'I slept for a whole afternoon in the early stages of labour. I remember I felt really tired, so I drew the curtains, got comfy with a hot water bottle and a bl...anket, and drifted off. I’d surface when a wave came of course, but once it had passed, I’d doze off again. I felt expectant but I wasn’t watching myself, or wondering what was going on. I was just so relieved I’d booked a midwife to come to me, because it meant I didn’t have to think or do anything until I wanted her there. I could just do what felt good, at that point. In the evening, I felt recharged. My husband made dinner, we had this funny romantic supper at the kitchen table with a candle, and about an hour later, things got much stronger, so I had a bath. Though I was having to close my eyes and breathe with focus, I knew it wasn’t labour because there was no change in my body. My doula had told me when the time came, I would feel my baby exerting pressure, a kind of growing weight, and as there was nothing like that, I made my husband go to bed in the spare room and rested some more, with the help of some relaxation music. At some point in the night, that big shift did come and I had to get on my hands and knees by the side of the bed. I started to sigh, hum and moan I think, and I guess my husband must have heard me, or peeped in. I don’t know. I was just totally absorbed with the job in hand. I knew now that that was all I had to do concentrate and that he would take care of everything else. My midwife and doula arrived at some point after that but I couldn’t say when. All I knew was if I needed the toilet, I’d find myself on the toilet or I’d be in the shower and think, yes, this IS what I wanted. I liked the water on my back, the cold tiles on my forehead, and then suddenly, I just remember having this almighty urge to squat down I could feel the baby pressing hard, the starting of an urge to push. My eyes were closed and all I was doing was focusing on each feeling as it came. No one said a thing... and everything felt very clear and sure. The sensation of her coming out was the clearest thing I have ever felt. I was on all fours in the bathroom, leaning forward onto a pile of soft towels someone had made me. And the next thing I knew she was there. My baby was in my arms.' Julia (from Why Home Birth Matters)

08.01.2022 There’s so much more to postnatal recovery than ‘losing the baby weight’ and getting back to ‘normal’ . . . Here’s how I support mothers to recover better afte...r giving birth with Motherbody Birth Rehab - a postnatal body recovery strategy for mothers: . . 1. Rest, recuperation, awe and love. . . 2. Belly binding. . . 3. Bodywork and massage. . . 4. See a women’s health physiotherapist to check for diastasis, prolapse and leaking. . . 5. Release your diaphragm and establish good breathing patterns after being restricted at the end of pregnancy. . . 6. Reconnect with your pelvic floor which was under extreme load at the end of pregnancy and extremely stretched or perhaps injured through a vaginal delivery. . . 7. Connect with your deep abdominals which were in an extremely stretched out state at the end of pregnancy and were perhaps injured during surgery if you had a caesarean. . . 8. Coordinate your pelvic floor with your diaphragm, breathing and transversus abdominis (deep abdominals) to create your ‘responsive core.’ . . 9. Learn how to ‘stabilise’ effectively before adding load to protect your pelvic floor which will be vulnerable for some time after giving birth. . . 10. Activate, strengthen and coordinate your gluteal muscles with your ‘core’ to support your pelvis and pelvic floor. . . 11. Release, activate and strengthen your tight neck, shoulders and mid back, and coordinate with your ‘core’ for lifting and carrying your baby. . . 12. After the initial six week period of rest, slowly and strategically strengthen your whole body from the inside out. . . A new Motherbody Birth Rehab postnatal Pilates course starts on Friday. 06.01.2022 Dates have been used around the world for centuries as a natural approach to preparation for labor. Several studies now support their effectiveness. Though we d...on’t know exactly why, they do have an impact on the start and progress of labor - likely due to an impact on the hormone oxytocin which helps labor start and progress effectively. A 2011 study found that women who ate dates starting at 36 weeks were: Significantly more dilated when they got to the hospital Had a significantly higher rate of intact membranes Were significantly more likely to go into labor spontaneously (i.e. without induction) And had nearly half the length of first stage of labor A 2014 study found that women who ate dates from 37 weeks on had: Greater cervical dilatation at admission Higher success rates of labor induction when needed A 2017 study concluded that all the above was accurate and yet another study found that eating dates in pregnancy led to less bleeding immediately after birth. Any type of dates work! The ‘dose’ is about 2.5 ounces of dates ( ~6 to 8 small dates or ~4 larger dates) daily, starting at 36 or 37 weeks and until labor begins. I love eating them plain, but you can include them in my herbal bliss bites (recipe on my IGTV), use them to sweeten cashew or almond milk, or include them chopped in yogurt or oatmeal. Amazingly, they also haven’t been shown to be a problem for blood sugar. Did you use dates to prep for your labor? Do you know a pregnant mama who is prepping for labor? Tag her in the comments below so she can learn about the power of this ancient medicine! #ideservebirthsupport #foodasmedicine #foodismedicine #prenatalcourse #prenatalclass #empoweredbirth #naturalbirth #naturalpregnancy #birthwithoutfear #herbalmedicine #herbalist #herbalista See more

01.01.2022 A lot of time people think that doing loads of abdominal crunches or pelvic floor contractions will strengthen their ‘core’, fix their diastasis, and stop them ...from leaking. . . But sit ups won’t fix your core issues. In fact, sit ups might even make core ‘injuries worse’. . . Your core is made up of several interrelated and coordinated muscle groups. I’m talking about your Pelvic floor, abdominals, and respiratory diaphragm (breathing). . . Your core system needs to be able to release and expand AND activate and contract, the right amount at the right time in relation to whatever you’re doing. . . So it’s helpful to consider how much core activation do you need to pick up a cup of tea? As opposed to carrying your heavy toddler? Pushing the pram up a hill? Standing in line at a shop? Or when moving from sitting down to standing up? . . All these movements require different amounts of activation and effort from your AMAZING core system. . . I’m pretty sure that what you really want is a ‘Responsive Core’. One that can both release AND contract, and that responds to how you move your body whilst coordinating all the different parts. . . It’s pretty simple to learn how, but it’s takes TIME for your body to change and restore. . . This is what I teach about in my Motherbody Birth Rehab course. Next course will run in February 2021. Join my newsletter to learn more.
